  • Patent number: 6076247
Abstract: A method for connecting a ball and socket joint to a control arm in a vehicle suspension system includes providing the ball and socket joint with a socket portion having a circumferential flange. The ball and socket joint is initially aligned with an opening formed through an outer portion of the control arm. Then, the ball and socket joint is moved upwardly such that the socket portion is received within the opening. The socket portion defines an outer diameter that is preferably slightly smaller than an inner diameter defined by the opening formed through the outer portion of the lower control arm. However, the flange defines an outer diameter that is preferably larger than an inner diameter defined by that opening. Thus, the engagement of the flange with the lower surface of the outer portion positively positions the ball and socket joint relative to the lower control arm.

Abstract: A combined neutral sensing and shift lever interlock assembly senses when all of the shift rails of a transmission are in a neutral gear ratio and prevents more than one shift rail from being shifted out of a neutral position at any given time. The transmission includes a shift lever having a lower end that extends through an interlock bracket into selective engagement with the shift rails. The lower end of the shift lever has a sensor provided thereon, while the interlock bracket has a target provided thereon. The target is disposed adjacent to the sensor whenever the lower end of the shift lever is located in a central neutral position (indicating that all of the shift rails are also positioned in their central neutral positions). When this occurs, the sensor causes a neutral relay to be closed, thereby enabling the starter circuit of the vehicle to start the vehicle engine.

Abstract: A cable socket wedge has two wedge halves held apart by at least three blocks, such that cutting the blocks allows the wedge halves to collapse inward, loosening the wedge and cable in the socket. Crushable inserts are located in the spaces between adjacent pairs of the blocks, between the wedge halves so as to provide sufficient crushable volume to allow the wedge halves to move toward each other when the blocks are cut. The wedge is employed with a socket having a window therein. The window is positioned in the socket such that, with a properly sized cable and wedge, the central of the three blocks is accessible through the window in the socket when a cable is secured and tightened with the wedge in the socket.

Abstract: A collapsible steering column includes a bellows tube with a corrugated portion in which the radius varies regularly along the length of the tube. A connective portion is located at both ends of the bellows tube, and transfer portions are located between each of the connective portions and the corrugated portion. By inserting a reinforcement into the end portion of the bellows tube, the strength and rigidity of the connective portion increases. Press forming, stamp forming, rivet forming, and/or adhesive methods are applied to connect the end portion of the bellows tube and the reinforcement.

The nut and expelling rod are joined to each other by intermeshing embossing mate for contemporary transfer of axial forces and torques. With a polymeric nut a number of advantages are obtained such as low friction, lifetime lubrication, low noise level, low production and maintenance costs. Furthermore, a possibility is provided for in a simple manner to provide the actuator with a safety nut connected to the main nut (12) with breakable entrainment means.

  • Patent number: 5906462
Abstract: An apparatus for securing a mechanical frame to the base of a circuit breaker. The mechanical frame includes a U-shaped tab defined by first and second legs extending from the bottom of the frame. Each leg has an interior edge and an exterior edge. The interior edges of the legs are separated from one another by a predetermined distance, and at least one of the legs includes a lateral groove across its interior edge. The base includes a generally rectangular slot into which the tab is inserted. At the center of the slot is a cylindrical void extending through the circuit breaker base. A blind rivet having a head portion and a body portion, is inserted into the cylindrical void from the outside of the base such that the body portion of the rivet is between the legs of the tab. The blind rivet is then mechanically upset causing the body portion of the rivet to expand into the lateral groove in the tab and to pull the object securely toward the base.

Abstract: A rigid connection of structural parts of a motor vehicle and a tool and for establishing the connection are provided. The structural parts are fixed together after a coating during their assembly to one another in a simple, joined and effective manner without plastically deforming the respective exterior structural part and damaging the coating in the process and therefore visually impairing the visible side of the structural parts. The two structural parts to be connected are designed as oblong hollow bodies with one structural part having axially spaced radial cross-sectional reductions along the length of the connection in which the other structural part is held on it while forming a releasable plug-type connection and in that the first structural part--starting from the plug-in position. Because of the expansion between the plug-type connection points, during an internal high-pressure deforming, the parts are locked in a form-fitting manner.

  • Patent number: 5810501
Abstract: A clinch-type fastener permits sheets to be joined at a right angle corner. The fastener includes a rectangular base with clinch-type undercut grooves along the sides. The base is connected to a partial cylindrical channel defining an axial bore for receiving a screw or pin. The axis of the channel is parallel to the undercuts and to a first sheet into which the base is clinched being received by a corresponding aperture in the base sheet. Tapered guides located on each side of the fastener directly above the undercuts facilitate placement of the insert into the sheet prior to clinching. The fastener is preferably formed by extruding metal to form a long length of material having this lateral profile. Individual fasteners can then be produced simply by cutting an elongate extrusion into small segments.

Abstract: A silicone paint brush artist's tool includes a handle and a novel painting tip. The painting tip is made of a resilient silicone having a generally three-dimensional paint contacting working surface that has a maximum cross-sectional diameter no larger than a maximum cross-sectional diameter of the handle. • Patent number: 5431379
Abstract: A method for fastening an input shaft and a torsion bar together in a power steering mechanism, and the associated torsion bar. A ball-receiving hole is bored in the end of the torsion bar. The end of the torsion bar is inserted into a bore in the input shaft and a ball is pressed into the hole to provide an interference fit between the shaft and the bar. Subsequently, the peripheral edge of the hole in the torsion bar is elliptically deformed so as to retain the ball in the hole and the bar in the shaft. Since a portion of the opening is slightly diametrically broadened by the ball, the periphery of the portion closely contacts the inner wall of the input shaft, thereby strengthening the connection between the torsion bar and the input shaft.
