Abstract: A geogrid reinforced compactable asphaltic concrete composite includes a bottom layer, a first compacted layer of asphaltic concrete, a triaxial geogrid, and a second compacted layer of asphaltic concrete. The first layer and the second layer each include an aggregate having sharp, compound edges, which when mixed in asphaltic cement, create an aggregate interlock within the triaxial geogrid that provides strength to a paved surface. As a result of the triangular aperture geometry of the triaxial geogrid, the geogrid provides an asphalt lateral confinement zone within the composite. The zone allows for the formation of transverse hairline cracks as stresses on the composite necessitate. At elevated temperatures, the asphaltic cement softens and flows into the small transverse cracks, thus enabling the asphalt mats to substantially reseal themselves.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to systems and methods implemented in a pothole patching system for creating a vacuum that pulls heavy particulate, such as gravel, out of a hopper. For example, according to an embodiment, a vacuum body having a vacuum chamber formed therein is positioned proximate to an opening of the hopper. A moveable slide gate is provided between the vacuum chamber and the opening of the hopper. The slide gate moves between open and closed positions for permitting and blocking communication between the vacuum chamber and the hopper. A reduction nozzle is provided between an air source and the vacuum chamber. Forced air flows from the air source, through the reduction nozzle, and into the vacuum chamber. The reduction nozzle reduces the pressure of the forced air entering the vacuum chamber, and thereby creates a vacuum in the vacuum chamber. Abstract: A preferred embodiment of the invention provides a method of placing visible advertising on the upper surface of a road (1). This method includes determining the location of any traffic control signs that are applied to the surface of the road, such as the location of signs (22, 25). Following from this, two exclusion zones (31, 32) are defined. These zones extend from the respective signs (22, 25) and terminate at a predetermined minimum distance from the signs. Advertising is then applied to the surface such that it overlies neither the signs nor the exclusion zones. Particularly, the advertising has been placed in the areas bounded by rectangles (33, 34), which are respectively disposed within lanes (7, 8).

Abstract: An articulated handle adapter for concrete hand-type floats that removably connects to a long pole handle, ordinarily used with bull floats, to a hand-type float for removal of imperfections preparatory to the final finishing. The inventive adapter includes an offset and canted yoke and a canted ear which is received between the bracket arms of a pole handle sleeve. The inventive adapter eliminates the use of knee boards in the process of removal of imperfections. The inventive adapter permits the cement finisher working on slab or flatwork to float out imperfections such as deep jointer marks, bull float marks, small holes, humps and bumps and the like far into the work surface while standing off to one side outside the forms, thereby speeding the final finishing process.

Abstract: An improved surface seeded exposed particulate concrete and method of making the improved surface seeded exposed particulate concrete is disclosed. Small particulate is sprayed over the upper surface of the concrete. The particulate may be sprayed using a material sprayer. The particulate may be uniformly sprayed to distances exceeding twenty feet. The particulate is mixed into a cement paste derived from the concrete mixture using floats. A surface retarder is then applied to cover the concrete surface. Subsequently, any surface film is washed from the surface of the concrete and the concrete is cured. The result is a surface seeded particulate with an exposed surface that is flat and is suitable for high traffic areas. The resultant surface may resemble stone, granite or marble.

Abstract: A vibratory roller is provided with an exciter assembly that need not be lubricated by an oil bath because the exciter gears need not be lubricated. At least an outer ring portion of at least one gear of the exciter assembly is formed from a non-metallic material. In one embodiment, a first gear is a composite gear having an outer toothed ring portion formed from a machined nylon material imbedded with at least one of a heat stabilizer and a lubricant, and a second, mating gear is formed from metal and acts as heat sink for the first gear. In another embodiment, both the first and second gears are composite gears having an outer toothed ring formed from a robust and thermally stable molded polymer. The gears can survive when the roller is operated at least 8 hours at a duty cycle of at least 50% while operating the roller at an ambient temperature of over 38° C. (100° F.) and while the exciter shaft is driven at a velocity of over 2,000 RPM and the exciter housing is subjected to over 31.
