Abstract: A method for compacting a surface of granular materials is disclosed. The method is applicable to wheeled compaction equipment such as pneumatic-tire compactors, drum-type compactors and asphalt compactors. The propel system includes a controller programmed to send a first at least substantially constant propel command that propels the compaction equipment in a forward direction. The controller then changes the speed of the compaction equipment by providing a second varying propel command that may increase or decrease the speed resulting from the first command. As a result, the speed of the compaction equipment oscillates, and the compaction process is improved.

  • Patent number: 8202021
Abstract: A method of cold in-place recycling of asphalt to remediate distressed roads. Asphalt particles obtained by milling the existing asphalt are limited by screening to a maximum size of about one inch length. Asphalt particle size may be established by limiting tooth spacing of the road milling equipment milling head to about 5/16 inch or 8 millimeter spacing intervals. A predetermined proportion of portland cement, water, and asphalt emulsion are added to generate asphalt particles. Portland cement may be deposited onto the existing asphalt prior to milling. The resulting combination is mixed to generate a recycled mix, which may then be discharged onto the road being remediated and further processed, such as by screeding, compacting, and sealing.

  • Patent number: 8186906
Abstract: A screed machine is formed with a forwardly positioned screed assembly including a wedge portion and pivoted wing members. The frame is supported on two rollers spaced behind the screed assembly, which is mounted on a mast for vertical movement in conjunction with a laser receiver that provides a signal from a laser level indicating the final desired grade of the stone base. The machine can be turned at a corner by extension of a jack stand to elevate the machine for rotation about the axis defined by the centrally located jack stand so that the screed machine can be redirected into a different direction without disturbing the final grade of the stone base. The screed machine is manually moved along the stone base by an operator pulling on the handle pivotally connected to the frame. A sight line provides a monitor for the lateral orientation of the screed assembly.

Abstract: Improved methods are provided for producing exposed aggregate concrete resistant to alkali silica reactivity. A concrete mixture is poured over a subgrade into a formwork. In a first embodiment, the concrete mixture includes a combination of lithium nitrate solution and concrete. In an alternative embodiment, the concrete mixture is a combination of concrete, aggregate and a lithium nitrate. Once the concrete mixture has been poured, the upper surface is floated or screed. Where aggregate has not been integrally mixed into the concrete mixture, the aggregate is surface seeded by broadcasting the aggregate upon the ASR resistant concrete surface. Thereafter, the concrete surface is troweled to embed the aggregate in the upper surface and provide a homogenous uniform surface. The aggregate is then exposed utilizing chemical retardants or mechanical apparatus.

The pavement structure has two or more pavement layers having gradient thermal conductivity; the thermal conductivity is layered among the pavement layers and is lowered from top to bottom, so that the pavement forms a uni-directional thermal conducting tunnel from the subgrade to the air. Heat can be easily released from the subgrade into the air, and is prevented from being transferred from the air to the subgrade. In this way, the frozen soil layer beneath the subgrade is cooled, so that the frozen soil table is made stable, and the highway subgrade in frozen soil areas is protected.

Abstract: This invention relates to a method for chip seal coating. Aggregate is pre-coated, at ambient temperature, with an emulsion. The pre-coated aggregate is then allowed to sit, preferably for at least 24 hours, to allow the mixture to break into the asphalt and soapy water components of the mixture. The aggregate is then air dried to a moisture content of between 1 percent minimum to a maximum of 15 percent. A paved surface may be manufactured by first apply hot asphalt binder to a properly prepared base. The pre-coated aggregate is then spread on top of the binder. Using a roller, the aggregate is embedded into the binder and compacted.

Abstract: A method for patching or repairing a hole in a road surface is defined by filling the hole and the area of the road surface about the hole with an oil-based adhesive, which is used to adhere a quantity of patching asphalt which is placed into the hole and into the area surrounding the hole having the adhesive applied thereto. After the asphalt is compressed or packed into the hole and into the surrounding area above the hole, a layer of sand is then applied thereover, which is, also, subsequently compressed into the asphalt to fill the pores thereof.

Abstract: A device to secure, cut and sequentially remove a manhole from a street environment. The manhole removing device is supported and rotatably driven hydraulically by a mobile operation equipment. A circular disk assembly has adjustable pavement cutters adjustably positioned from there within an inter-related manhole centering and a locking alignment and engagement plate assembly define a one-step cutting and removal of an existing manhole from the street for replacement.

Abstract: A method of applying building a pavement structure using a polymer modified hot-applied tack coat is disclosed. This polymer modified tack coat is non-adhesive at ambient temperatures, and, thus, also non tracking. The tack is applied while hot, but cools quickly. The subsequent application of hot mix asphalt results in a superior bond between the asphalt layer and the tack layer. It is particularly well suited to bonded friction course applications since it removes the necessity of specialized spray paving machinery and allows the use of conventional asphalt distributors and pavers.

Abstract: A paving system includes a machine having a frame with a plurality of ground-engaging elements coupled with the frame, and a height adjustable screed coupled with the frame. The paving system may also include a paving control system having a receiver configured to receive screed control data indicative of a position of the height adjustable screed relative to a reference position. The paving control system may further include a computer readable memory storing a control algorithm, which may include a smoothness estimating algorithm and a screed adjusting algorithm. An electronic control unit is coupled with the computer readable memory and is configured via the control algorithm to determine a smoothness value for a region of a mat of material which corresponds with an irregular pattern of screed position, in response to screed control data received via the receiver.

Abstract: An improved blend added to soil for soil strengthening and stabilization comprising the combination of 15 to 60 percent by weight of a lime component, such as quicklime, hydrated lime and/or a lime by-product, such as lime kiln dust, with a balance or remainder of cement. The blending of the materials has a synergistic effect, such that the resulting product exceeds the soil strengthening and soil stabilization capabilities of the individual components. The synergistic effect further extends to the hardening and curing characteristics of the blend, in that the blend has a very short hardening time compared with its component parts. The blend physically and chemically modifies the soil to which it is applied to accomplish the soil strengthening and stabilization impacts, and is applicable to a wide range of soil types and conditions.
