Abstract: A key cutting and decoding apparatus positions a key blank relative to two distinct, independently movable key cutters and decoding probes. A frame includes a reference axis extending longitudinally from the front of the frame to the rear of the frame. Two locking slots hold removable key blank holders upon a carriage assembly. The carriage assembly is arranged for movement along both an X-axis, generally axial direction of the reference axis, and a Y-axis, generally transverse to the reference axis of the frame. A first cutting assembly moves a cutting drill vertically, along a Z-axis generally orthogonal to each of the reference axis, the X-axis and the Y-axis. A second cutting assembly moves a cutting wheel rotationally, about a rotational axis orthogonal to the Z-axis.

The clearance being of a dimension to allow the flow of coolant therethrough thereby improving the cooling of the cutting surface and enhancing the flow of chips away form the vicinity of the blades. The invention further includes a substantially reduced number of blade segments. Alternative blade tip configurations are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5123786
Abstract: A milling cutter has replaceable cutting inserts mounted on a toothed disc or drum body. Seatings for the inserts on the teeth locate them at spaced intervals on the periphery of each tooth. The inserts of at least one tooth of the body are peripherally staggered in their seatings relative to the inserts on at least one other tooth such that the staggered and spaced inserts on the teeth have paths of rotation that intersect to define a continuous profiled cutting line. The inserts have their cutting edges ground in situ on the teeth to define the profile of the cutting line. By this method a finish quality profiled surface can be produced using cutting inserts that are initially of standard form.

  • Patent number: 4629370
Abstract: Disclosed is a sprocket cutter in which there is a cutter body having a plurality of pockets along its periphery and a plurality of wedge recesses facing the periphery within each pocket. There is an array of inserts disposed within each of the pockets, each of the inserts having a cutting portion and a plurality of wedges equal in number to the number of inserts and wedge recesses. Each of the wedges is interposed between each of the inserts and each of the wedge recesses so that, as each of the wedges is moved inwardly into its corresponding wedge recess, each of the inserts is securely clamped between its corresponding wedge and the pocket. Each of the inserts is positioned so that the cutting portion of each insert extends beyond the periphery of the cutter body. Each of the inserts cuts a segment of the sprocket contour as the cutter body rotates with adjacent segments of the sprocket contour being cut by inserts located in different pockets. There is also a method of assembling the sprocket cutter.

Abstract: A gear or rack-shaped tool for precision machining of tooth flanks of gears is provided with a coating of a hard material like diamond or cubic bornitride (CBN). In order to be able to apply this coating without any problems, the tool includes two connected halves. Each half includes a base member with teeth which project axially beyond one side of the base member every second tooth being removed. The projecting teeth of each half project into the gaps created by the teeth removed from the other half.
