Patent number: 6247878Abstract: A mechanism and method for adjusting the position of a cutting insert relative to the body of a cutting tool is disclosed. The mechanism of the invention comprises a pair of flexible cantilevered walls each defining a wall of cutting insert pocket in the body of a boring bar. A boring bar of the invention comprises a bar body having at least one pocket for receiving a cutting insert and a position-adjusting mechanism including a pair of flexible cantilevered walls each defining a wall of the pocket. In the method of the invention, a boring bar is provided having a plurality of pockets each defined by a pair of cantilevered walls adapted to be flexed by a wedge mechanism. Patent number: 6062778Abstract: A cutting tool insert is mounted on a flexure member that is mounted on the end of a boring bar. The construction of the flexure member is such that it is compliant along a radial axis perpendicular to the direction of tool advancement, but relatively stiff along a feed axis in the direction of tool feed, and along a cutting axis in the direction of tool rotation. Any displacement of the flexure member and cutting tool insert as a result of workpiece engagement or boring bar deflection is sensed by laser detectors. Signals from the laser detectors are coupled to a computer that rotates with the boring bar and are used to provide feedback signals to an actuator in contact with the flexure member. The actuator displaces the flexure member to correct the position of the tool insert.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1998Date of Patent: May 16, 2000Assignee: Unova IP Corp.Inventors: Philip S. Patent number: 4508476Abstract: A boring tool is disclosed capable of positioning a tool element between a radial cutting position and a radial retracted position out of contact with the finished workpiece bore to avoid tool mark formation on the finished bore during tool withdrawal. The boring tool is simple and low cost in construction and includes a resilient tool-carrying member which extends transversely of the spindle axis in cantilever fashion for deflection by a spindle draw bar relative to a stop means on a fixed support member attachable to the spindle. During boring, the tool-carrying member is in deflecting engagement with the drawbar and, in conjunction with stop means, positions the tool thereon in a radial cutting position. For tool withdrawal, deflecting engagement is released so that the resiliency of the tool-carrying member positions the tool in a radial retracted position out of contact with the finished workpiece bore.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1982Date of Patent: April 2, 1985Assignee: Ex-Cell-O CorporationInventor: Shivdas A.
