Abstract: A chuck assembly (22) for releasably attaching a cutting accessory (23) to a rotary driven tool such as a surgical drill (20). The chuck assembly includes a chuck head (30) from which a drive spindle (36) extends rearwardly. Clamping jaws (34) extend from the front end of the chuck head to hold the cutting accessory in place. The chuck head, the drive spindle and the clamping jaws can rotate in unison about a common axis of rotation. Alternatively, the chuck head and the drive spindle can be rotated relative to each other around this common axis to lock and unlock the jaws. A spindle lock housing (41) is located between the chuck head and the drill to which the chuck head is attached. The drive spindle (36) extends through the spindle lock housing (41). A moveable switch (88) is mounted to the spindle lock housing (41). The switch can be positioned to engage the drive spindle to prevent rotation of the spindle.

  • Patent number: 6042310
Abstract: A bit attaching arrangement for a power tool includes a bit locking member rotatable with respect to the output shaft of the power tool. A first gear is fixed to the bit locking member so that rotation of the first gear causes rotation of the locking member. A second gear is fixed to the output shaft so that rotation of the second gear causes rotation of the output shaft. A third gear engages both said first and second gear simultaneously and is capable of rotation by an operator of the power tool. Rotation of the third gear results in counter rotation between the bit locking member and the output shaft so as to result in securement of the bit to the shaft. A further aspect of the invention includes a pinion shaft onto which the third gear is mounted.

Abstract: A drill has a drill spindle centered on and rotatable about an axis and having a front externally threaded end and immediately thereadjacent a shank. A chuck element centered on the axis is formed with a forwardly open tool hole, axially therebehind with a threaded bore complimentarily engaging the spindle end, and immediately therebehind with a coaxial unthreaded bore surrounding the shank. An adjustment element is rotatable about the axis on the chuck element. One of the elements is formed with a plurality of angled guide passages and the other element is formed with a screwthread centered on the axis. Respective jaws in the passages and exposed in the tool hole each have a toothed edge meshing with the other-element screwthread so that relative rotation of the elements displaces the jaws along the respective passages.

  • Patent number: 5927913
Abstract: A tool holder having a holder body, a collet, an intermediate rod, a clamp bolt and a pull stud. The collet and the intermediate rod are integrally connected by screwing. The collet is retracted into the holder body via the intermediate rod by rotating the clamp bolt in the first direction, and presses and holds a cutting tool. In this event, a head of the clamp bolt comes in pressure-contact with a stepped surface of the holder body by surface friction and rotates. On the other hand, in order to release the cutting tool, the clamp bolt is rotated in the second direction opposite to the first direction. In this event, the clamp bolt is rotated by rolling friction via steel balls inserted between the head and a center hole of the holder body, and the collet is pressed out forward.

The chuck includes an outer sleeve member that is axially movable relative to the drive spindle between a gripping position and a release position. A sleeve actuating device is provided having a first member engaged with the outer sleeve member and which extends generally radially outward from the drive spindle or chuck. The first member is movable in a direction so as to move the outer sleeve member between the gripping position and the release position. The sleeve actuating device includes an actuator member configured with the first member to move the first member upon an external force being applied thereto. Abstract: An improved coupling system for lockably coupling machine tool components is provided that includes a male coupling, a female coupling having an axis, a pair of opposing jaw members having lock surfaces for engaging ledge surfaces in the male coupling when the jaw members are moved apart, and a drive train having first and second drive spheres for simultaneously moving proximal and distal ends of the jaw members apart. The drive spheres engage ramps on the inner surfaces of the jaw members that have cylindrical profiles to provide lenticular contact between the spheres and the jaw members. Cam and follower surfaces are provided between the jaw members and one of the male or female couplings to enhance the locking force between the couplings. Abstract: The present invention uses a collar that fits over a nose and a locking cylinder of a chuck of the drilling machine. The collar has a cutout section to accommodate the chuck key including the key gear when it is engaged with the beveled gear of the locking cylinder. The collar has a first bore of a first diameter with is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the nose to provide a tight fit between the collar and the nose of the chuck. A fastener is used to attach the collar to the nose of the chuck. A second bore has a second diameter to fit over at least the beveled gear of the locking cylinder. The second diameter is large enough to provide a clearance so that the locking cylinder is free to rotate within the collar.
