Abstract: In a method and a machine tool for machining metallic workpieces, a cooling device is provided to supply a cryogenic coolant to a first tool and a precooling device is provided to supply the cryogenic coolant to a second tool. The first tool is held in a first chuck and processes a workpiece, with the first tool during processing being cooled via the cryogenic coolant. The second tool is held in a second chuck and will subsequently be used for processing the workpiece. The second tool is supplied via the precooling device with the cryogenic coolant and thus cooled to the operating temperature required for processing. Due to the fact that the second tool is precooled to the required processing temperature, after the change of tools, the processing of the workpiece can be continued immediately. By precooling the second tool during the primary processing time, the total processing time of the workpiece is reduced, providing the machine tool with higher productivity.

Abstract: The invention is provided to improve the cooling efficiency for cooling a throw away tip regardless of whether a tip holder is rotating. A throw away type rotary cutting apparatus comprises a throw away tip having a cutting edge formed thereon, a tip holder having a support section that holds the throw away tip, a drive unit that supports and rotates the tip holder, and a mounting table that can move relative to the axis of rotation of the tip holder, wherein the tip holder further comprises an inlet path that is formed in the position of the axis of rotation and through which coolant is introduced, a heat exchange section that performs heat exchange between the introduced coolant and the throw away tip, and a discharge path that discharges the coolant after heat exchange. Cooling efficiency is improved by cooling the throw away tip from mainly the inside of the tip holder.

Abstract: A cutting method capable of efficiently removing cutting chips around a cutting point with a little electric power, and cutting a work with high accuracy with a ball end mill. The ball end mill has a slit shaped-opening part at a portion adjacent to a rake face of a cutting edge in internal communication with a suction passage, and a work in which a cutting liquid is previously coated on an inclined face of the work is cut while the cutting liquid is sucked in the area around the cutting edge from the opening part through the suction passage. As a result of this, the cutting liquid in the area around the cutting edge is sucked from the opening part and a cutting power decreasing rate is higher than in a case where the suction is not carried out.

Abstract: Multiple fluid nozzles are mounted in a machine tool such that the cutting tool in the spindle is targeted with liquid or gas cutting fluid from multiple directions, providing better coverage and thereby more effectiveness. This provides more efficient and safer use of a machine tool by automating the aiming of fluids at a desired location. Multiple nozzles at respective multiple physical locations are preferably controlled by a single control unit, so they can be synchronized to maintain a common target point on a cutting tool, even if the nozzles are located asymmetrically or non-uniformly with respect to the spindle axis or target point. Preferably, modular nozzle assemblies can be configured for flexibility in mounting on the machine tool.

  • Patent number: 8303220
Abstract: Cryogenic fluids are delivered along an axial path through a machine tool spindle to a cutting tool that is mounted in a standard tool holder. An external source of cryogen is delivered via an insulated line to a junction block housing where the cryogen flows into a vacuum insulated coolant delivery tube mounted on the axis of rotation of the spindle. The coolant delivery tube couples with a cryogenic manifold located in a standard tool holder in the end of the spindle. The cryogenic manifold couples the cryogen to a tool that is mounted in the tool holder. Before a tool change operation, the coolant delivery tube is raised to disconnect it from the cryogenic manifold, and to turn off the flow of cryogen to the delivery tube.
