Patent number: 6468008Abstract: The present invention embodies a method and structure for constraining logs on a truck or trailer without the use of safety wrapper chains or straps. In this apparatus, the stakes, bunks, bunk pockets, head board and tail board are used to constrain logs on the bed of the truck or trailer. The stakes may be permanently or semi-permanently fixed into a bunk pocket and the stakes constrain the movement of the logs from side to side on the truck or trailer. The head board and tail board are permanently attached to stakes which are correspondingly inserted into pockets welded into the bed of the trailer or truck and are permanently or semi-permanently fixed in the pockets. The head board and tail board constrain the movement of the logs from front to back on the truck or trailer. This systems configuration makes it possible for the logs to be hauled without the addition of safety wrapper chains or straps to secure the load.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2001Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Assignee: Great Lakes Manufacturing, Inc.Inventor: Craig French

Patent number: 6164883Abstract: A returnable and reusable packaging and storage system for elongated members, such as awnings. The system includes a container upon which a series of tubular members are stacked. Each tubular member is adapted to slidably receive an elongated member and allows individual elongated members to be removed from the stack of tubular members regardless of their vertical position within the stack. Spacers are attached to the elongated members that are shorter than the tubular member holding the elongated member, so that the combined spacer-elongated members are accessible from either end of the tubular member. The tubular members project in a cantilever fashion from the container, the projecting ends being protected and supported by end bags. The end bags preclude the tubular members, as well as the elongated members therein, from moving longitudinally, and thereby prevent the awnings from sliding out of the tubular members during the shipment and storage thereof.Type: GrantFiled: August 18, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: White Consolidated Industries, Inc.Inventor: David Wilcox

Patent number: 5567096Abstract: Embodiments of a log bunk shear-pin system are shown and described, each embodiment including a shear-pin that engages a log bunk and prevents the bunk from swiveling when the truck is being loaded or unloaded, but that releases the bunk when the shear-pin is mistakenly left engaged during travel. The shear-pin shears, or otherwise comes apart, when the power of the log load or the turning tractor forces the bunk to swivel relative to the tractor or trailer. The preferred shear-pin comprises a shoulder pin and a pin cap connected with a threaded insert. When the forces of a swiveling bunk push on the pin cap and the shoulder pin sideways in opposite directions, the insert breaks. A new insert may then be easily installed into the undamaged pin cap and shoulder pin. Thus, the shear-pin prevents damage to the bunk-ears and only allows damage of an inexpensive and replaceable portion of the shear-pin.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 1994Date of Patent: October 22, 1996Inventor: Douglas D. Patent number: 4496270Abstract: A chain cap is provided for forming a stable load suitable for vehicular travel from a plurality of elongate articles. A plurality of the chain caps are provided for encompassing the elongate articles. Each of the chain caps are provided with interfitting surfaces which interlock when the chain caps are stacked, tie bar surfaces which define tie bar channels extending between adjacent chain caps and conformal surfaces for engaging the elongate articles. Each of the elongate articles is engaged by at least a pair of the chain caps, the conformal surfaces of the chain caps engaging opposing sides of the elongate articles. A first planar array of the elongate articles is established, the elongate articles being disposed in a roughly parallel relationship with pairs of chain caps being adjacently disposed for defining a tie bar channel therebetween. A tie bar is mounted in the tie bar channel, the tie bar extending between adjacent pairs of chain caps.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1982Date of Patent: January 29, 1985Assignee: Urban Systems Streetscape, Inc.Inventor: Curtiss W. Patent number: 4451188Abstract: A railway car adapted to convey cylindrical objects such as coils includes a plurality of fixed trough members and sections of shiftable inclined trough assemblies disposed atop a support deck. By selectively laterally displacing the shiftable trough assemblies the car is alternately configured to provide single/triple or double troughs, or a combination thereof, in order to achieve maximum lading capacity in any one car regardless of the diameters of the coils. Positioning elements on each shiftable trough assembly alternately mate with a fixed trough member or separate positioning elements on the support deck to specifically define the various trough modes. A lock assembly is operable to engage a retainer element carried by each shiftable trough assembly when located in either mode.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1981Date of Patent: May 29, 1984Assignee: Portec, Inc.Inventors: Ryan M. Patent number: 4365919Abstract: A device for automatically stabilizing and holding steel coils to a truck bed. The device can be used for securing differently-sized loads because of its adjustability, and the device does not extend beyond the existing width dimension of the truck bed to any substantial degree. In a first embodiment, a pair of curved members are secured to the load by means of a curved intermediate connecting member. In another embodiment, a pair of pivotal arm members are secured in opposing relation on each side of the truck bed via bracket arrangements. The load-contacting members are adjustable cushioning pads and they have a curved configuration. The devices may be operated manually, hydraulically or pneumatically.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1979Date of Patent: December 28, 1982Inventor: Larry L. Mehki

Patent number: 4324190Abstract: This relates to the storage of drums and like cylindrical objects in a vehicle body for shipment. More specifically, it has to do with the provision of a pallet which has the opposite ends thereof notched in a complementary manner so that cylindrical objects may be packed thereon in columns wherein transversely adjacent cylindrical objects are longitudinally offset and cylindrical objects of adjacent columns are internested.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1980Date of Patent: April 13, 1982Assignee: The Continental Group, Inc.Inventor: Norman S. Patent number: RE30373Abstract: A bundle for shipping and the storage of a plurality of elongated pipe lengths of a common size arranged in tiers is disclosed in which the longitudinal axes of the pipes in the bundle are disposed parallel to an elongated base formed of spaced-apart transverse sleepers. The pipes in each tier are separated by divider blocks standing on the sleepers and separating overlying sleepers from those there-below a distance substantially equal to or greater than the pipe diameter. Strapping encircles the sleepers and the dividers and the pipe therebetween to secure the bundle in a flexible manner throughout its length to accommodate the rigors of hoisting and transporting its storage in multiple bundles and on uneven supporting surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1978Date of Patent: August 19, 1980Assignee: Seattle Box CompanyInventor: Ferdinand J.
