By Thread-gripping Locking Element Patents (Class 411/246)
  • Patent number: 11506242
Abstract: A lock nut is useable for setting a bearing to preload or endplay. A plurality of preload markings are circumferentially spaced apart on the nut. The distance between the preload marking corresponding to a preselected amount of preload applied or reduced on said bearing when the nut is (i) tightened to apply a preload force to said bearing or (ii) loosened to reduce a preload force on said bearing, respectively. A plurality of endplay markings are also circumferentially spaced apart on the nut. The distance between the endplay markings, corresponding to a preselected amount of endplay increased or reduced in said bearing when the nut is (i) tightened to reduce endplay on the bearing or (ii) loosened to increase endplay in said bearing. The use of endplay and preload markings enables setting of a bearing on an axle or spindle to either an endplay setting or a preload setting by adjusting the rotation of the lock nut according to the endplay markings or the preload markings, respectively.

  • Patent number: 11193533
Abstract: A method for preloading a bearing includes releasably, threadably, and directly attaching an attaching member to a circumferential outside surface of an exposed end of a threaded shaft of an axle or spindle. A frame is axially separated from, and coupled to, the attaching member. A plurality of extensions extends from the frame axially past the attaching member toward the wheel hub assembly. An adjustment mechanism moves the frame and the plurality of extensions axially towards the wheel hub assembly to contact the wheel hub assembly and/or the bearing to apply a preload to the bearing within the wheel hub assembly.

  • Patent number: 9682517
Abstract: A sandwich panel joint assembly for a nacelle of a wind turbine and method of manufacturing same is disclosed. The method includes forming at least one groove into a core structure. A next step includes inserting at least one fastener element within the groove such that the fastener element is recessed within the core structure. The method also includes placing the core structure containing the fastener element into a mold. A next step includes inserting a resin material into the mold to at least partially surround the core structure, wherein a portion of the fastener element becomes embedded within the resin material. The resin material is then allowed to cure so as to form a plurality of panel members that surround the core structure. As such, the fastener element is recessed within the core structure and molded into one of the cured panel members.

  • Patent number: 8328486
Abstract: A wheel retention nut includes a body having a front face and a rear face. A central bore with internal threads extends through the body. A first outer perimeter of a first diameter is positioned adjacent to the front face. The first outer perimeter defines a polygon adapted to receive a wrench. A second outer perimeter of a second diameter, which is larger than the first diameter, is positioned adjacent to the rear face. The second outer perimeter is sized to retain an eccentrically rotating wheel.

  • Publication number: 20120070246
Abstract: A screw and nut assembly includes a screw, a nut and a spacer. The nut has a central through hole and an annular fastening portion extending from one end thereof. The annular fastening portion has a plurality of grooves thereon. The spacer has a central hole and an annular concave portion next to the central hole. The screw penetrates the spacer and the nut, and then the nut is tightly screwed to the screw. When the screw and the nut are locked, the nut is moved toward the spacer. The annular fastening portion of the nut is confined by the annular concave portion of the spacer and compressed inward. Through the grooves, the annular fastening portion is compressed inward, so that the inner edge of the annular fastening portion engages with the outer threaded body of the screw tightly to prevent disengagement.

  • Patent number: 7802953
Abstract: An inset panel fastener is provided primarily for honeycomb substrates, such as those employed in the aircraft industry. The inset panel fastener includes a plastic body portion and a metal female threaded nut positioned within the body. The body includes a cylindrical barrel shape having a top and a bottom. A bore extends through the body from the top to form an opening for receipt of a male fastener. The metal nut has locking threads and is positioned in body's bore at the body's top proximal extremity. The body further includes non-locking plastic female threads integrally formed into said body's bore. The plastic female threads have the same diameter as the metal threads and are immediately adjacent to the metal threads so as to form continuous threads for permitting receipt of a male threaded fastener. The metal female threads are locking threads to provide a locking action for locking a male fastener to the inset panel fastener.

  • Publication number: 20090304478
Abstract: A connection element (1) has a thread (2) that can be made to engage with a mating thread such as, for instance, a nut. The thread includes locking means (3) that acts upon the mating thread. The locking means (3) are formed by flanks (4, 5; 6, 7, 8, 9) of at least one section (10; 11) of the thread (2) whose arrangement with respect to each other is changed vis-à-vis the arrangement of the flanks (18, 19) of the thread (2) outside of the locking section (10; 11) in such a way that, when the thread (2) engages with the mating thread, a locking force is generated on at least one of the flanks (4, 5; 6, 7, 8, 9) of the locking section (10; 11).

  • Patent number: 5387239
Abstract: An adjustable length prosthetic implant includes an implant body and an axially received stem. The stem has a threaded portion and an end portion adapted for mounting with a bone. The implant body includes an end portion adapted for mounting with a bone and a tubular sleeve. The sleeve adjustably receives the stem. An adjustment nut is rotatably carried upon the sleeve for threadably engaging the stem to effect telescopic length adjustment of the stem relative to the sleeve. A jam nut is threaded over the stem and forcibly tightened against the adjustment collar to prevent accidental adjustment of the stem. The female thread formation in each of the adjustment collar and jam nut includes a wedge ramp positioned across the thread root for engaging the thread crest of the corresponding male screw formation on the stem to evenly distribute stresses through the screw formations.

  • Patent number: 4619568
Abstract: A retaining member (26) is constructed undersized from a memory metal for permitting a member (26) disposed in an element retaining position to recover and grippingly engage a stud (12) on which the member (26) is arranged. The retaining member (26) can be used alone, or in combination with a load-carrying nut (16) for greater strength. Providing a convex face (46) on the retaining member (26), and a concave surface (40) on the load-carrying nut (16), permits the total height of the arrangement to be limited to only slightly more than the height of the load-carrying nut alone in order to meet existing space limitations.

  • Patent number: 4248285
Abstract: A safety nut comprises an axial extension in which an elastic safety element is disposed. In one embodiment the element comprises a wire spring clip whose legs are tangent to a central thread of the nut so that a bolt threaded onto the nut flexes the legs and creates a reactive clamping force. In another embodiment the elastic element comprises a spring disk having a thread which is axially offset at only a portion relative to the nut thread. A bolt tends to axial distort the disk and thereby creates an axial reactive force which clamps the bolt. During manufacture, the disk is threaded simultaneously with the threading of the nut and is thereafter deformed at at least one location to create the axial offset relationship between the threads.
