The fastener system includes means for latching the tilt of the coil so as to minimize the constraining forces and optimize the motion of the helicoil, that results in the screw or bolt being pushed into the substrate. The fastener may be actuated after it has been partly or completely turned into the substrate.

    Abstract: A method utilizes a locking device that includes a shackle member having a shank with a latch portion and a stop at opposite ends. A locking head mounts in a locked state on the latch portion but is removable when unlocked. A sleeve is carried on the shank but is removable. The sleeve and the shank together define a size conversion structure for the shackle. When the sleeve is on the shank, the shackle has one operative thickness to closely fit one size aperture, but when the sleeve is removed, the shackle has another, smaller operative thickness to fit a smaller aperture. A retaining member may be employed to resist removal of the sleeve. Two or more sleeves may be used to fit more than two apertures. These can be separately mountable onto the shank or may be nested on the shank, one inside of the other.

    Abstract: An anti-vibration mechanism for lock nuts is disclosed. The invention is made up of a cylindrical tube having a hex nut midway along its length and external threads on each side of the hex. One of the threaded ends is adapted to have an internally threaded, knurled collar screwed onto it. To ensure this collar does not vibrate loose, a groove is machined into the threaded zone on which the knurled collar is to be screwed and an elastomeric O-ring is fitted into this groove. When the knurled sleeve is tightened, there is an increased frictional engagement between the O-ring and the threaded inner diameter of the knurled collar preventing loosening of the collar.

    Abstract: A fastener for securing a composite panel 14 to a noncomposite support 12 includes a composite stud 22 with a notched shank 26, and a collar 36 with an axis 38 and circumferentially extending ribs 56. In one embodiment, a spring 66 urges the rib into contact with the notch to tension the stud and clamp the panel to its support. In a second embodiment, the collar 36a has external threads. A nut 76 engages the threads to tension the stud and clamp the panel to its support. The spring 66 is optional in the second embodiment. Because the composite stud is susceptible to damage if exposed to excessive torque, both embodiments include features to minimize torque transfer to the stud during assembly and disassembly.

The fastening force is adjustable by the width of the gap before releasing hydraulic pressure in the cavity. By releasing hydraulic pressure in the cavity, the fastened condition is obtained. Conversion between fastened condition and unfastened condition can be made quickly and easily.

The nut engages the tube assembly and the faceplate such that tightening of the nut about the tube assembly is translated through the rockbolt to cause engagement of the anchor.
