  • Patent number: 5352065
Abstract: A drive nut (3,7) for a rock bolt, incorporating a nut (7) with a crimped protrusion (9), and an insert (3). The protrusion is crimped to form a plurality of lips (8) adapted to retain insert (3) in the head of the nut (7), the crimping being effected by a pressing tool having a number of preferably square bars. By this crimping technique, the drive nut (3,7) can be fabricated in such a way that the breaking torque required to expel the insert (3) from the nut (7) can be limited to a predetermined range.

  • Patent number: 5282707
Abstract: The present invention relates to a fastening system comprising a nut with a locking threadform and a nut driving system which visually marks the locking nut when the proper torque is reached. The locking nut with a locking threadform has been designed so that the major diameter thread of a typical bolt will engage a wedge ramp portion of the nut threadform thereby resisting unintentional loosening. The nut driving system of the present invention comprises a wrench socket wherein the socket contains a ball set; when the socket is used to tighten the locking nut, it visually marks the nut head when the proper torque is reached.

  • Patent number: 5282698
Abstract: A threaded fastener and method of fabrication thereof wherein the fastener or nut includes a first portion having external, wrench-engaging surfaces and a central, through bore, internally threaded for at least a portion of its length from a base surface. A wall portion extends integrally from the end of the first portion opposite the base surface, concentrically surrounding and spaced radially outwardly from the end of the bore. The first and wall portions are formed as a metal casting with the wall portion in two segments separated by longitudinally extending, V-shaped notches. The free edges of the wall segments, which initially lie in a plane normal to the axis of the bore, are deformed by a die, moving radially inward so that the wall segments are in a domed configuration with the free edges defining a substantially oval opening having a major axis with a length about equal to the diameter of the bore and a minor axis about 4/5 that of the major axis.

  • Patent number: 5148727
Abstract: An installation tool for use with locking fasteners which reduces cam off during use. The tool comprises a cylindrical socket wrench having a central axial bore which defines a recess on one end for attachment to a socket driver and an elliptical cavity on the opposite end for engaging the collar of the locking fastener. The installation tool further comprises one or more pockets positioned on the wrenching portion of the cavity. The pockets provide space in which collar mass is deformed. As the collar is deformed to lock the collar and bolt together, collar mass is deformed into the pockets on the tool. The deformed collar mass retains the tool and collar in an engaged position until the collar is completely deformed and the fastener is locked.

  • Patent number: 5064312
Abstract: A delay stopper for use in a mine roof anchor is provided. A mine roof anchor has a threaded roof bolt and a threaded receiving member for the roof bolt whereby the roof bolt and the receiving member initially rotate as a unit to mix resin components that are placed in the bore hole in a destructible capsule above the roof anchor. When the roof anchor is placed in the bore hole, the destructible capsule is ruptured, and the components within the capsule are mixed to form resin which at least partially secures the mine roof anchor within the bore hole. The delay stopper causes the roof bolt and the threaded receiving member to rotate as a unit to mix the resin after the capsule ruptures. The delay stopper has a cylindrical body portion interfitting into the threads of the threaded receiving member and a conical end portion formed on the cylindrical body portion and extending axially from the body portion in a direction toward the end of the roof bolt. The delay stopper is preferably formed of an epoxy resin.

  • Patent number: 5061132
Abstract: A self-locking fastener system comprises a pin for receipt in a hole in a workpiece and having an external thread which mates with a collar having an internal thread for carrying a tensile load. A plurality of helically extending flutes in the external thread on the pin collectively extend approximately one full revolution around the circumference of the thread. The collar has three longitudinally extending lobes for driving by a deltoid driver socket. When a desired clamp-up load is achieved on a workpiece, the socket plastically deforms the lobes and collar material radially inwardly thereof so that some of the collar material inwardly from each lobe is displaced into the void volume created by a helical flute. This displaced collar material inhibits unscrewing of the collar from the pin.

  • Patent number: 5020949
Abstract: A controlled-torque fastener limits the torque which may be applied to it for the delivery (screwing-in) of the fastener into a threaded bore of a workpiece or the like. The fastener has a threaded shaft and a tool seat which is configured to be engaged by a driving tool such as a conventional wrench. The tool seat is movable between a driving position in which the tool seat is in driving engagement with the shaft and a non-driving position in which the tool seat effectively disengages the driving tool from driving engagement with the shaft. Resilient biasing means urge the tool seat into the driving position, and driving torque applied to the tool seat urges the tool seat against the biasing force towards the non-driving position. When the driving torque applied to the tool seat exceeds a pre-selected maximum torque, the biasing force is overcome, thereby disengaging the driving tool from effective driving engagement with the shaft, and discontinuing delivery of the fastener.

  • Patent number: 4789284
Abstract: The present invention relates to expansison anchors for solid wall installation and is specifically concerned with providing a self cutting expansion anchor which can be installed in one continuous motion by utilizing combined cutting blades and wall gripping members which cut their own undercut portion within a wall bore into which the gripping members are then permanently further expanded in positive locking engagement. Such dual-stage installation is achieved by utilizing an anchor mounting assembly having a pair or opposite-hand screw-threaded portions thereon which separately mount a blade expanding thrust member and a camming ramp on which the blades are initially expanded by axial movement of the thrust member toward the ramp and in the second stage causing the ramp to axially move toward the thrust member in further expanding relation to the blades.

  • Patent number: 4408936
Abstract: A torque limited threaded locking fastener and a method for setting it to form an assembly. The fastener comprises an externally threaded shank and an internally threaded collar. At least one convolution of the threads on the shank is non-circular. The collar has a nut section and a drive section. The drive section is shaped to be engaged by a driver. Abstract: A collar threads onto a shear pin. When the collar engages a surface of a workpiece, resistance to further threading increases. When sufficient resistance to threading occurs, a setting driver upsets lobes of the collar and forces these lobes radially inward toward the axis of the collar. Material of the collar inside the lobes responds to deformation of the lobes and flows radially inward against the shear pin to lock the collar, shear pin and workpiece together.
