  • Patent number: 4929134
Abstract: An expansion dowel assembly is made up of an anchor bolt and an expansion sleeve laterally enclosing the bolt. The sleeve is expanded by driving it in the axial direction relative to the bolt so that the leading end of the sleeve widens as it moves axially over a conically shaped expanding member at the leading end of the bolt. Cutting teeth are formed on the outer surface of the sleeve at its leading end and provide a saw-tooth section. The teeth cut into the surface of a borehole in a receiving material and form an undercut in the borehole surface as the sleeve is expanded. To facilitate expansion, an annular groove is located in the inside surface of and adjoining the cutting teeth. The annular groove is spaced on the opposite side of the cutting teeth from the leading end of the expansion sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4919577
Abstract: A blind fastener with an axially extending sleeve having an axially extending internally threaded passage therethrough. A head at one end has an axially facing surface thereon with a periphery which is centered on its axis. A mandrel includes an axially extending threaded shank that is threaded into and through the passage. A torque-off groove is formed on the shank. Torque tool engaging surfaces are accessible at the head end of the sleeve, and blind upsetting structure is axially movable by rotating the mandrel to form an enlarged body at the unheaded end of the sleeve. A nut is threaded to the mandrel with a bearing face facing toward the surface of the head of the sleeve. The bearing face of the nut is concavely shaped so as to make contact with and thereby to make a retention engagement with at least some points around the periphery to hold the sleeve against rotation relative to the nut when the mandrel is drawn into the sleeve with the nut pressed against the head.

  • Patent number: 4899431
Abstract: A tool for setting threaded anchors, having an elongated body with a longitudinal bore and a threaded shaft received in the bore and projecting beyond both ends of the body to form a nut engaging end and an anchor engaging end. The anchors to be set include an anchor frustum having a longitudinal threaded bore, surrounded by a soft sleeve. A pinway is formed in the body communicating with the bore, and a retaining pin, in engagement with the threaded shaft, projects laterally through the pinway, for preventing relative rotational motion between the threaded shaft and the body while allowing relative longitudinal motion. A nut engages with the nut engaging end of the shaft. The method of setting such an anchor is to insert the anchor, attached to the end of the tool, into a hole where the anchor is to be set. The nut is then rotated with respect to the shaft, while preventing the rotation of the shaft and the body, so as to draw the frustum into the soft sleeve until the anchor is affixed within the hole.

  • Patent number: 4898505
Abstract: An expansion dowel assembly includes an axially extending anchor bolt and an expansion sleeve laterally enclosing the bolt. At its leading end, the anchor bolt has an expansion cone displaceable opposite to the insertion direction of the dowel assembly relative to a conically shaped expansion region at the leading end of the sleeve. Initially, the cone angle of the expansion cone is larger than the cone angle of the expansion section of the sleeve. A circumferentially extending annular bead is located on the outer circumferential periphery of the expansion region. The expansion region is slotted in the axial direction and its wall thickness decreases in the circumferential direction toward the slots. At the outset of the sleeve expansion, it is greatly widened and the annular bead is pressed into the surface of the borehole in which the dowel assembly is inserted.

  • Patent number: 4897004
Abstract: An elongated stem extends through a bore in a sleeve having a preformed head at one end. The sleeve extends through aligned holes in one or more workpieces to be fastened together. Pulling the stem through the sleeve causes an enlarged tail on the stem to be drawn into the end of the sleeve opposite the preformed head. The sleeve thus expands, forming a blind head. The workpieces are sandwiched between the preformed head and the blind head. To prevent the stem from sliding out of the sleeve, a locking collar is provided within the sleeve bore. The collar is slideable from a first position spaced from the preformed head to a second position within the preformed head. The collar is engaged by a shoulder on the stem and is moved from the first position to the second position as the stem is pulled through the sleeve. When in the second position, the collar is prevented from further movement, and is deformed as the stem continues to advance.

  • Patent number: 4883394
Abstract: The utility of a cover for vents or drains is improved by having a unitary, integral fastening means which can be used to either secure the covering so securely that mutilation of the cover may be required to remove the cover or that the cover may be easily removed and replaced. The cover can be formed from any polymer with any desired surface configuration, i.e., hole size and shape, and can be used to modify existing covers or as the original cover for a hole or vent. The fastening means when integral is made of the same material as the cover and can be easily expanded and secured by pressure elements. Since the normal sleeve has been replaced by the integral fastener which is part of the cover, no relative rotation of the sleeve and pressure means can occur.
