Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed which are suitable for use in the manufacture of two-piece metal containers. In particular, a way of making cups from metal sheet is disclosed using a combination of stretching and drawing operations. The resulting cups have the advantage of having a base thickness that is thinner relative to the ingoing gauge of the metal sheet.

Abstract: When rounding metal sheet sections for forming can bodies by means of a rounding machine, a pre-rounding element is used, whose lower part is deflectable with respect to the upper part by means of an actuating element. Thereby, the joint between the upper and the lower part is executed as a solid body joint whose section modulus in bending during the deflection is different along the joint. Thereby, a uniform impact on the metal sheet may be reached. Furthermore, the separating gap between the upper and the lower part is arranged obliquely, thus reducing the bending of the lower part.

Abstract: An apparatus is provided for forming an outwardly-rolled lip on an open end of a deformable cylindrical container body. The apparatus may include a mandrel having a generally cylindrical-shaped portion for movably supporting at least a portion of an interior surface of the container body. The apparatus further includes a lip-forming die assembly forming a part of the mandrel and having an annular cavity defining an open mouth portion and a closed bottom portion which defines a surface area extending generally radially outwardly of the mandrel outer surface and which is oriented with the open mouth portion generally transverse to an outer periphery of the container body and which faces the open end of the container body around the periphery. An axial forcing member contacts the other end of the container body for axially moving the container body along the outer surface of the mandrel and the container open end into and through the die assembly.
Abstract: A substantially rectangular metal blank is formed about a mandrel (76) to provide a very open shell (28) having a pair of axially extending lips (20c,20t) separated by a distance sufficient to permit a prewound spool (10) or other product to be inserted radially, laterally into the shell prior to closing the shell about the spool or other product.

Abstract: The guiding apparatus for a body for the production of can bodies having a non-circular cross-section by interconnecting the edges of the body by means of making a longitudinal seam comprises at both of the mutually opposite sides of the body supported symmetrically at circumferential areas two respective supporting rollers operative for a guiding of the body at the height of the edges to be welded and which are supported by their axes of rotation in succession relative to the direction of feed of the body in a rocker. These rockers are pivotably mounted at one end of a double arm transmission lever such that the supporting rollers operating as guides for the bodies abut continuously uniformly the further fed body for a tapering can body. A small pressing force is maintained by a pneumatic cylinder coupled to the other end of the transmission lever.
Abstract: Can bodies (1) rounded around an arm (16) are taken over by endless conveying tracks (30;50). These are each guided over guide devices (32;52) and a drive wheel (33;53) and each comprise a run parallel to the arm (16) in order to convey the can bodies (1) along the arm (16) in the direction of a welding station (70). The guide devices (32;52) are mounted on track carriers (26;46) and form, together with these and the associated conveying track (30;50), units adapted to the length of the can bodies and interchangeable as a whole. These units are each secured to a sliding carriage (22;42) which is adjustable at least substantially radially to the arm (16).
