Abstract: A pipe handling apparatus for laying elongate articles in deep waters includes a tiltable pipe handling structure housing a traveling clamp for holding and/or paying out under tension the elongate article and a fixed clamp. The traveling clamp is driven via an articulated rack located by a guide mechanism. The rack driven by a pinion drive mechanism and acts at a lower portion of the rack, such that the center of gravity of the apparatus is lowered, and loading in the structure is reduced.
Abstract: An automatic loader (10) for drill rods (11) adapted to be associated with a boring machine having a guide and drive assembly (12) for the drill rods (11) includes at least a store (13) containing a plurality of drill rods (11) and a movement assembly (14) that is able to selectively remove, one at a time, the drill rods (11) from the store (13) to position them on the guide and drive assembly (12). The movement assembly (14) is arranged in an intermediate position between the store (13) and the guide and drive assembly (12), so as to not interfere with the latter during the removal of the drill rods (11) from the store (13).
Abstract: The drilling vessel includes at least one floating body and a platform which is supported by one or more support columns on the floating body and includes a drilling installation. The vessel is provided with storage provisions for tubular drilling equipment. The storage provisions include one or more shafts which are disposed in one or more of the support columns, extend downwards from the platform and in which a number of items of the drilling equipment can be vertically disposed.
Abstract: A reconfigurable work platform for an aerial work platform system includes at least one outwardly tiltable portion on which an occupant of the work platform can lean so as to extend his or her lateral reach. This is useful when the work platform itself cannot be moved closer to a desired location. An aerial work platform system using such a reconfigurable work platform, and a method for reconfiguring a work platform are also contemplated.
Abstract: A horizontal directional drilling machine including a rod transfer member having a rod retainer that is movable between a first position and a second position. When the rod retainer is in the first position, the rod retainer is adapted to retain a pipe on the transfer member. By contrast, when the rod retainer is in the second position, a rod can be moved from the transfer member without being obstructed by the rod retainer. A sensor is provided for detecting when a pipe is positioned on the pipe transfer member, and for causing the rod retainer to automatically move from the second position to the first position when a rod is detected.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for positioning a tong comprises a piston and cylinder assembly and a mounting assembly therefor. The mounting assembly is mounted on a support beam in the drilling derrick and the piston and cylinder assembly is pivotally mounted on the mounting assembly. The piston and cylinder assembly can be pivoted between an operative position in which it can be extended and retracted to move a tong towards and away from a string of tubulars, and an inoperative position in which the piston and cylinder assembly extends along an upwardly extending axis with part of the piston and cylinder assembly disposed to either side of the mounting assembly.
Abstract: An apparatus for handling a plurality of tubular members. The apparatus comprises A tong member for coupling a first tubular with a second tubular. A first axial roller is positioned on the first side of the tong member and a second axial roller is positioned on the second side of the tong member. A hydraulic power pack is used to provide power to the first roller, the second roller, and the tong member. A first Y-frame roller is positioned on the first side of the tong means, and a second Y-frame roller positioned on the second side of the tong member. In the preferred embodiment, the axial and Y-frame rollers are connected to a support member, with the first axial roller being configured for movement of the plurality of tubular members in a longitudinal direction and the second Y-frame rollers being configured for movement of the plurality of tubular member in a radial direction.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a drilling vessel with drilling tower or drilling mast for drilling in the earth's surface from said vessel, for example for oil or gas. The drilling vessel according to the present invention is characterized by an auxiliary tower or mast placed next to the drilling tower or drilling mast, and a clamp carriage which is fixed so that it is movable between a first position near the drilling tower or drilling mast and a second position near the auxiliary tower or auxiliary mast, said clamp carriage having at least one gripping clamp for clamping the drill string. The presence of an auxiliary tower or auxiliary mast next to the drilling tower or drilling mast means that a substantial time gain can be achieved during the construction and dismantling of the drilling string.
