Patent number: 7775780Abstract: A cassette having an elastomeric sheet that is bonded or mechanically attached to a rigid substrate. A flow channel is molded into the rigid substrate that corresponds to a flow channel molded into the elastomeric sheet. The cassette is used in combination with a peristaltic pump having pump head rollers that are mounted radially from the axis of rotation of the pump motor so as to compress the elastomeric flow channels against the rigid substrate during operation. The flow channels molded into the rigid substrate have smooth, fluid lines free from sharp edges and abrupt direction changes and correspond with the fluid channels molded into the elastomeric sheet so as to provide a transition region with a relatively constant cross-section over its entire length that approximates the cross-sectional area of the flow channels molded into the rigid substrate and the fluid channel molded into the elastomeric sheet so that the entire fluid path is of relatively constant cross-sectional area.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2006Date of Patent: August 17, 2010Assignee: Alcon, Inc.Inventors: Mark A. Patent number: 7753880Abstract: A tool system for operating an irrigation pump. The pump includes a fixed pump head driven by a pump motor and a removable tube set. A readable memory such as a RFID is integral with the tube set. The tube set memory contains data describing the physical characteristics of the tube set. A control console reads the data in the tube set memory. Based on these data, the control console then regulates the operation of the pump motor so that fluid, when required, is delivered at those flow rates. These data are also used by the control console to regulate priming of the pump so that when the system is initially set up a head of irrigation fluid can be pumped close to the end of the handpiece from which the fluid is to be discharged.Type: GrantFiled: September 28, 2004Date of Patent: July 13, 2010Assignee: Stryker CorporationInventor: Don Malackowski

Publication number: 20090035165Abstract: The present invention provides an addressable multi-channel peristaltic pump. According to the invention, this pump design allows for selection and operation of one or more pump heads on a drive shaft, while locking other non-selected pump heads in a stationary position. It is possible to operate the multi-channel pump using a limited number of motors, preferably two motors: a selector motor and a dispense motor. Thus, the pump provides for pumping or dispensing of one or more fluids without the need for multiple pumps. Likewise, compared with typical single motor multi-channel systems, where all pump heads on the drive shaft must rotate at the same time, the present invention provides for selective dispensing of one or more fluids. The pumps of the present invention are suitable for any multiple fluid transfer application, including in automated multi-channel reagent dispensing systems, such as nucleic acid purification systems.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 3, 2007Publication date: February 5, 2009Inventor: James Chang

The eye treatment cassette engages the treatment console to couple the eye treatment probe with the treatment console. The pump comprises a pump head having a plurality of projections disposed to rotate about an axis, a ramp disposed near the rotating projections, and a resilient channel configured to transfer fluid when engaged by the ramp and the plurality of projections. The ramp is configured to reduce pressure fluctuations with the eye during a surgical procedure and comprises and entrance portion, a central portion, and an exit portion.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2006Publication date: May 15, 2008Applicant: Advanced Medical Optics, Inc.Inventors: John I. Publication number: 20080114301Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to improved methods, devices, and systems for eye surgery. In some embodiments, the invention may provide new and/or improved devices, systems, and methods for detecting surgical fluids in a fluidics cassette, particularly cassettes which are used to couple an eye treatment probe to an eye treatment console. Rather than relaying on internal reflection by a gas-liquid interface, the fluid detection techniques described herein may make use of the changes in propagation of light through a portion of the holding tank when the portion varies between empty and full. For example, light may propagate directly through the holding tank portion when there is no surgical fluid, but may be directed away from a light detector when the portion of the holding tank is filled with surgical fluid.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2006Publication date: May 15, 2008Applicant: Advanced Medical Optics, Inc.Inventors: Mark H. Publication number: 20070286755Abstract: A mechanism having a pair of pivoting cassette clamping bars. The clamping bars are connected to a pneumatic cylinder or an electromechanical actuator through a series of links and an actuator wheel so that extension and retraction of the pneumatic cylinder or the electromechanical actuator causes the clamping bars to rotate and counter-rotate. The use of a pneumatic cylinder provides smooth, well-controlled movement of the clamping bars.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 12, 2006Publication date: December 13, 2007Inventors: David L. Patent number: 7278981Abstract: A disposable cartridge for use in extracorporeal blood perfusions systems that have a control unit for controlling the flow of fluids. The cartridge has a housing defining a plurality of internal passageways that connect to a cardiopulmonary circuit, a cardioplegia circuit and a suction circuit. The cartridge may be fitted with one or more of a bubble trap, a filter, and a valve.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2005Date of Patent: October 9, 2007Assignee: Sorin Group USA, Inc.Inventors: Bruce S. Patent number: 7273359Abstract: A peristaltic pump tubing system for use with a peristaltic pump roller assembly in a surgical procedure. The system comprises a uniquely shaped disposable cassette for retaining tubing to be used during the procedure and a uniquely shaped cassette receiving station situated adjacent the roller assembly. The cassette comprises a frame for holding the tube in a loop shape for engagement with the peristaltic rollers. The frame supports a one-sided pressure transducer to indicate the pressure within the tube. The cassette receiving station includes a sensor for engaging the one-sided pressure transducer and is situated adjacent the rollers of the peristaltic pump on the pump housing. A retaining bracket cooperates with the inherent resiliency of the tubing loop to hold the tubing in place against the rollers.Type: GrantFiled: November 5, 2003Date of Patent: September 25, 2007Assignee: Linvatec CorporationInventors: David D. Patent number: 7258534Abstract: A medical pump includes a chassis having a fixed seat, and a main carriage having a carriage footing for receiving a fluid delivery device and restricting its movement. An actuator automatically moves the main carriage between open and closed positions to engage the fluid delivery device to the seat. The seat establishes the position of both the main carriage and fluid delivery device in the closed position. The actuator is connected to the main carriage by a rear carriage assembly having a manual release element for disengaging the actuator from rear carriage assembly and thereby from the main carriage. A processing unit detects jam conditions by processing carriage position data and electrical load data from the actuator.Type: GrantFiled: September 22, 2003Date of Patent: August 21, 2007Assignee: Hospira, Inc.Inventors: Marwan A. Patent number: 7238010Abstract: An irrigation surgical tool system comprises a motorized handpiece, a tool for insertion in the handpiece, a console including a mounting plate and peristaltic pump rotor and a tube set including a cassette installable on the console for peristaltic pumping of irrigation liquid to the tool. Passages in the tool allow irrigation liquid flow, between a fixed outer tube and rotating inner tube of the tool, to a surgical site, through windows in the tool inner and outer tubes. Application of suction to the tool enables withdrawal through the inner tube of irrigation and surgical debris from the surgical site.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2004Date of Patent: July 3, 2007Assignee: Stryker CorporationInventors: David Hershberger, Chamara L.
