Abstract: The cosmetic use is described, in particular for use as a UV filter, of benzotriazole diorganopolysiloxanes having either formula: ##STR1## where R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl, phenyl or 3,3,3-trifluoropropyl, B is R or A, r=0-200, s=0-50, or formulas: ##STR2## where u=1-20, t=0-20 and t+u.gtoreq.3.A and/or B represent a benzotriazole C.sub.3 -C.sub.12 alkylene which may be substituted.

Abstract: A hair treating method for imparting curl retention to hair in which at least one film forming ingredient is applied to the hair. The improvement utilizes as the film forming ingredient an organosilicon compound which is a nonpolar silsesquioxane. Hair fixative compositions including the nonpolar silsesquioxane are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an aerosol hair spray package having reduced volatile organic compound emission during the useful life of the package. A hair spray composition (3, 25) is packaged in either a self-propelled aersol hair spray package (1) or a pump spray hair spray package (20) containing a low delivery rate discharge means (6,23). The hair spray composition (3, 25) contains a combination of at least two polymers in weight ratios of 99:1 to 1:99 differing in weight average molecular weight by at least 1.5, one of which is required to have a number average molecular weight of at least 100,000. This blend of polymers combines with the low delivery rate discharge means--0.2-0.38 grams per second for the self-propelled hair spray package (1) and 0.06 to 0.012 grams per pump stroke for the pump spray hair spray package (20)--to provide an atomized hair spray composition having a volume mean particle size of 60.+-.12 microns for package (12) and 73.+-.13 microns for package (20).

Abstract: The mousse hair composition of the invention comprises a resin provided by about 3-15% by weight of about a 20-50% alcoholic solution of the half-alkyl ester of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl vinyl ether-maleic anhydride copolymer having a molecular weight of at least one million, which is about 5-90% neutralized, preferably with about 0.15-1.0% by weight of ammonium hydroxide, about 60-95% by weight of water, about 0.3-2.0% by weight of a surfactant, and about 0-30% by weight of added ethanol.

Abstract: Photostable cosmetic composition containing an ethylrutin derivative as protective agent against sunlight and its use in the protection of the skin and the hair.The invention relates to a photostable cosmetic composition for the protection against UV rays with wavelengths between 280 and 400 nm, which contains an effective quantity of an ethylrutin derivative chosen from amongst tetrahydroxyethylurtin and morpholinoethylrutin, in a cosmetically acceptable aqueous or aqueous/alcoholic medium.The ethylrutin derivative is advantageously combined with a know UV-B or UV-A filter.Application as a sunscreen composition for skin, a protective composition for hair as a light-stabilized cosmetic composition.

Abstract: This invention presents novel two-phase hair-fixing aerosol systems which are aqueous-based. The systems, which utilize dimethyl ether as a propellant (and also a solvent, as needed), can be shaken to form a semi-stable emulsion or mixture which is stable for a time sufficient for spraying, and are compatible with a wide variety of hair-fixing resins.

Abstract: New compositions for the treatment of keratin material, in particular human hair, skin and nails are provided comprising a combination of a cationic polymer with an anionic polymer. Surprisingly the anionic polymer can be retained well on the hair, even after rinsing, when applied with the cationic polymer.

Abstract: A process for stabilizing a specific UVB absorbing compound which comprises adding to said UVB absorbing compound at least one specific UVA absorbing compound in an amount of 0.1-10 parts by weight based on 1 part by weight of UVB absorbing compound is disclosed and also a cosmetic composition and a UV absorber, both containing said specific UVB absorbing compound and said specific UVA absorbing compound, respectively.

Abstract: Improved hair fixative compositions are prepared from copolymers containing specific alpha-aminoethylenephosphonate betaine monomers. The resulting fixative compositions exhibit an enhanced tolerance of non-halogenated hydrocarbons, yet also exhibit a high degree of shampoo removability, making them particularly useful in aerosol formulations using non-halogenated hydrocarbon propellants.

Abstract: Hair care compositions which give both improved style and hair conditioning properties are disclosed. These compositions comprise from about 0.05% to about 10.0% of a nonrigid silicone gum, said gum having dispersed therein from about 0.01% to about 8.0% of unsolubilized particulate matter which is preferably an octylacrylamide/acrylate/butylaminoethyl methacrylate copolymer.

Abstract: The present invention relates to styling agents comprising adhesive copolymers along with a volatile diluent useful in products such as shampoos and conditioners which provide hair styling hold. The monomer components in these copolymers are randomly distributed in the copolymer chain, preferably to form a substantially linear chain. Preferably, at least one of the monomer components is selected from vinyl pyridine, acrylate amides and methacrylate amides and one of the other monomer components is selected from butadiene, isoprene, isobutene, acrylate esters, methacrylate esters, vinyl alkyl ethers, alkyl-substituted butadienes, and chloroprene. These copolymers also have a single glass transition temperature within the temperature range of from about 0.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. The volatile diluents useful in these styling agents can be hydrocarbons, esters, ethers, amines, alkyl alcohols, or volatile silicon derivatives.

Abstract: A hair setting composition that includes a water-insoluble amino- or substututed amino-containing compound, such as octylamine or an amino-functionalized silicone, and an ionizable metal salt, wherein the metal has a valence of at least II, such as aluminum chloride or zinc chloride, in a molar or molar-equivalent ratio of ionizable metal salt to water-insoluble amino-containing compound of at least 1:1, and having a pH in the range of about 2.7 to about 4.5, to provide unexpectedly durable hair set retention properties after application to human hair.

Abstract: A composition for effectively treating dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis comprising a combination of essential ingredients consisting of microfine particles of a clay mineral containing adsorbed magnesium, water, ethanol, sodium chloride and, optionally, minor amounts of glycerin and precipitated sulfur. The effectiveness of the method in treating such scalp diseases by topical application to the scalp epidermis is predicated on the capacity of the composition to release and deliver magnesium cations and hydroxyl anions to the causative sites and return the associated pathological cells to a normal morphology.

The silicone copolyol is a polymer of organosiloxy units selected from the group consisting of dimethylsiloxy units, trimethylsiloxy units, CH.sub.3 SiO(C.sub.x H.sub.2x)(OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.y (OCHCH.sub.3 CH.sub.2).sub.z OR and (CH.sub.3).sub.2 SiO(C.sub.x H.sub.2x)(OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.y (OCHCH.sub.3 CH.sub.2).sub.z OR where x has a value of 1 to 12, R is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carboxy atoms, y is greater than or equal to 1, z is greater than or equal to 0 and the sum of y+z and the amount of dimethylsiloxy units and trimethylsiloxy units is such that the silicone copolyol imparts an autophobic effect to the hairspray composition.

Abstract: Composition for setting the hairdo and grooming of the hair on the basis of a synergistic combination of (a) 0.1 to 10.0% by weight of a quaternized copolymerisate consisting of vinyl pyrrolidon and dimethyl aminoethyl methacrylate (80:20) and (b) 0.1 to 5.0% by weight tetraoxyethylene lauryl ether.By corresponding tests it is shown that other fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ether than tetraoxyethylene lauryl ether with the component (a) do not show a synerigistic effect reinforcement.

Abstract: New alkyl-hydroxypropyl-chitosans of the formula IHO[C.sub.6 H.sub.11-m-q NO.sub.4 (R.sup.1).sub.m (R.sup.2).sub.n (R.sup.3).sub.q ].sub.p H (I)(m=0-0.6; n=0.5-10; q=0.5-4; p=50-5000; R.sup.1 =acetyl; ##STR1## R.sup.3 =C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl) and their salts with organic or inorganic acids. The invention is directed, in addition, to a process for producing the chitosan derivatives of the formula I, as well as cosmetic compositions for the treatment of hair or skin, particularly compositions for strengthening hair, comprising a content of these chitosan derivatives. The described alkyl-hydroxypropyl-chitosans are distinguished by their favorable solubility in organic solvents. Therefore, they can also be used, for example, in anhydrous hairsprays.

Abstract: Aqueous aerosol mousse compositions are disclosed which contain a silicone material dissolved in the aerosol propellant phase. Such compositions are not only easily processed but also provide for better dry combing than is obtainable if the silicone material is dispersed in the aqueous phase.

Abstract: Hair care formulations are prepared which comprise a carrier and a functional amount of a cationic water soluble graft copolymer of a N,N-dialkyldiallyl ammonium halide on a substrate of cellulose, galactomannon gum or derivative thereof, wherein the graft copolymers are characterized by a nitrogen content within the range of 0.25 to 4.5%, and are prepared by a unique polymerization process.

Abstract: Cosmetic compositions are disclosed for the treatment of hair or skin, characterized by a content of new quaternary chitosan derivatives of the formulaHO[C.sub.6 H.sub.11-m NO.sub.4 (R.sup.1).sub.m (R.sub.2).sub.n (R.sup.3).sub.q ].sub.p H (1)(m=0-0.5; n=0.01-6; q=0.005-3; p=10-50,000 ##STR1## Also disclosed are the new quaternary chitosan derivatives per se as well as processes for their preparation. The chitosan derivatives have a good substantivity, particularly to hair keratin, and prove to have hair strengthening and hair conditioning characteristics.

Abstract: Cosmetic compositions are disclosed for the treatment of hair or skin, characterized by a content of new quaternary chitosan derivatives of the formula ##STR1## Also disclosed are the new quaternary chitosan derivatives per se as well as processes for their preparation. The chitosan derivatives have a good substantivity, particularly to hair keratin, and prove to have hair strengthening and hair conditioning characteristics.

Abstract: The invention relates to a cosmetic composition for combating the greasy appearance of hair. This composition is characterized in that it contains an active product consisting of a particular polymer derived from chitosan comprising 0 to 30% by weight of units (A), 5 to 50% by weight of units (B), 30 to 90% by weight of units (C), or alternatively preferably 0 to 20% by weight of units (A), 40 to 50% by weight of units (B), 40 to 50% by weight of units (C.sub.1) below; ##STR1## The use of the composition makes it possible to delay the onset of the greasy appearance of the hair.

Abstract: Aqueous aerosol mousse compositions are disclosed which contain a water-dispersible silicone elastomer. The presence of the elastomer provides for clean wet hair feel along with good style retention.

Abstract: Hair care compositions are disclosed containing a combination of carboxyfunctional polydimethylsiloxane and a cationic, organic polymer. The compositions can be used as hair fixatives and as such may be formulated into aerosol, pump spray, lotion, cream or mousse type hair care products. The compositions are especially effective in providing flexible, long-lasting hold to hair styles.

Abstract: A film-forming cosmetic composition useful as a facial pack, nail enamel, eye liner etc., which comprises a copolymer of vinyl alcohol and alkyl vinyl ether, being referred to simply as PVA/AVE, consisting of 98 to 80 mole % of vinyl alcohol monomer units and 2 to 20 mole % of linear or branched alkyl vinyl monomer units having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms. The molar ratio of the vinyl alcohol monomer units to the alkyl vinyl ether monomer units is in the range of from 95/5 to 85/15. The PVA/AVE according to the invention has no acetic groups with ester bonds in a molecule. Instead, there are alkyl or alkenyl groups having ether bonds which serve for steric hindrance for preventing gelation of an aqueous solution of such copolymer. From this reason, the PVA/AVE does not undergo any hydrolysis as time passes and is thus excellent in storage stability.

Abstract: New compositions for the treatment of keratin material, in particular human hair, skin and nails are provided comprising a combination of a cationic polymer with an anionic polymer. Surprisingly the anionic polymer can be retained well on the hair, even after rinsing, when applied with the cationic polymer.

Abstract: A hair cosmetic composition contains (A) 0.01 -20 wt % of one or more of specific branched quaternary ammonium salts and (B) 0.1-30 wt % of oils and fats. The hair cosmetic composition is excellent in imparting softness, smoothness and antistaticity to the hair and even when oils and fats are contained in a large amount, does not leave oily appearance or feeling on the hair.

Abstract: Foamable compositions comprising water, and a modified non-ionic cellulose ether prepared as described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,228,277 produce very stable foams. Accordingly, these compositions are suitable for use as foaming personal care products, such as hair styling mousses and foaming hand lotions and cleansers, and in other applications where stable foams are needed. In personal care products, foaming is desirably effected by an aerosol propellant included in the foamable composition.

Abstract: A mousse hair product comprises a body film forming resin and a long chain non-ionic ester for imparting good combability and reducing the static charge of the hair. The non-ionic chemical increases the stability of the composition and in combination with corrosion inhibitors reduces its corrosive effect upon the epoxy coated, tinplated steel aerosol containers.

Abstract: The invention provides surface-active random oligomers of the general formula:R.sub.1 --O--C.sub.2 H.sub.3 (Z)--O].sub.n H (I)in which R.sub.1 denotes a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or a cyclo-aliphatic, aromatic or alkylaromatic radical containing 1 to 30 carbon atoms, Z denotes a group A and/or at least one group corresponding to the formula (II)R.sub.2 --O--C.sub.2 H.sub.3 (A)--O].sub.m CH.sub.2 -- (II)in which R.sub.2 denotes a hydrocarbon radical having the meaning indicated for R.sub.1 and containing a number of carbon atoms from 8 to 30, n denotes an average statistical value from 1 to 20, m denotes an average statistical value from 0.5 to 10 and A denotes a group of hydrophilic character. These oligomers can be used in cosmetic or pharmaceutical compositions.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a cosmetic composition containing, as an agent for protecting against light, pure aloesin or an aloe extract containing at least 40% of aloesin and less than 5% of barbaloin, in a quantity of 0.5 to 20% by weight, in a cosmetically acceptable medium.Such a cosmetic composition can consist of a protective composition, a sunscreen composition or a cosmetic composition stabilized against light and can be applied on skin or to hair.
