  • Patent number: 6033611
Abstract: In preparing a golf ball comprising an inner cover (8) and an outer cover (13) around a core (5), an injection mold is used for the injection molding of the inner cover. The mold has a molding surface defining a cavity (4) and a plurality of opposed support pins (6) adapted to be moved into and out of the cavity with respect to the molding surface. The inner cover is formed by supporting the core in the cavity by means of the support pins, leaving a space between the core and the molding surface, injecting a molding material into the space, and curing the injected molding material while support pins are being projected into the cavity and/or support pins have been withdrawn behind the molding surface, thereby forming around the core the inner cover (8) having recesses (12) and/or protrusions (14).

Abstract: A vacuum pressure forming apparatus which is capable of uniformly heating a sheet member and preventing the occurrence of wrinkles or rain drops in the sheet member. The apparatus is equipped with an endless belt having a number of air holes and is stretched between a heating drum and a cooling drum. After preheating, the sheet member is placed closely into contact with a surface of the endless belt through the use of a pressing roller and the sheet member is clamped between the endless belt and a metal pattern having a plurality of cavities formed therein. The apparatus further includes a pressure difference producing device which supplies pressurized air from a rear surface side of the endless belt toward the sheet member such that pressure on an upper surface of the sheet member becomes higher than pressure on a lower surface thereof. Consequently, the sheet member is formed into configurations corresponding to the configurations of the cavities of the metal pattern.

  • Patent number: 6006601
Abstract: A process for determining the precise initial volume of the mold cavity of an injection molding machine in which a first and second section engage into seated alignment thereby forming a mold cavity. Vent valves, controlling communication between the interior and exterior of the mold cavity, are closed thereby sealing the mold cavity. An injection means begins injecting a test substance into the mold cavity. The test substance continues filling the mold cavity until the detection of a predetermined threshold level. A measuring means performs the step of measuring the amount of the test substance in the mold cavity, thereby providing sufficient information for calculating the precise initial volume of the mold cavity of the injection molding machine. The apparatus used to perform the method described herein comprises an injection molding machine with a mold cavity configured with vent valves capable of sealing the interior of the mold cavity from the exterior.

  • Patent number: 6000924
Abstract: A new method and device to encapsulate integrated circuits such as flip chips and BGA packages. A special mold to surrounds the chip to be encapsulated in a cavity, and the encapsulant is injected into the cavity at an elevated pressure, and possibly at an elevated temperature. This shortens the cavity filling time by two or three orders of magnitude, compared to the conventional dispensing process. The reliability of the package is increased by increasing the adhesion of encapsulant to the package, by controlling fillet shape through in-mold curing, and by completely filling the cavity through proper mold design and, optionally, evacuation of the cavity prior to injection. The invention also allows the use of a wider range of encapsulants, including highly viscous material, fast curing materials and reworkable materials.

Abstract: A method for producing a multilayer molded article that includes a resin body and a skin material on a surface of the resin body, which method uses a mold having male and female molds. The shortest horizontal distance of a mating gap between the horizontally outermost wall surface of the male mold to which the skin material contacts and the horizontally innermost wall surface of the female mold to which the skin material contacts is 0.25 to 3 times the minimum thickness from which the once compressed skin material can restore the original thickness. The shortest length L in a mold closing direction of a mated part formed between the outermost wall of the male mold to which the resin melt contacts and the innermost wall of of a flange of the female mold satisfies the equation:(t.sub.1 -t.sub.0 +10)mm.gtoreq.L.gtoreq.(t.sub.0 -t.sub.0)mmwherein t.sub.1 is a distance (mm) between the male and female molds when the resin melt first reaches the horizontally outermost edge of the male mold, and t.sub.

  • Patent number: 5538578
Abstract: A method of joining end portions of a weatherstrip consists of introducing the end portions to openings in a mold such that a seal portion of the weatherstrip is compressed substantially to the shape of a seal lip of the seal portion. The end portions are separated in the mold by a predetermined gap and a rubber material is injected into the gap for mutually bonding the end portions of the weatherstrip. Such a method of joining allows the weatherstrip to be installed on complexly shaped openings with no degradation of sealing characteristics over the perimeter covered by the weatherstrip. A molding apparatus for joining said end portions includes a clamping member for assuring correct positioning of a sealing edge of the weatherstrip.

Abstract: A mold and method of forming a butterfly valve and the novel valve formed. The disclosure includes providing a valve skeleton having a body portion, a hollow neck extending from the body portion to receive a valve stem and a cruciform-shaped actuator plate portion on the hollow neck, suspending the valve skeleton in a mold cavity in inverted orientation, and injecting reaction injection molding polymer by laminar flow into the bottom of the mold cavity with an amount of polymer sufficient to fill the space from the bottom up, encapsulating the skeleton, and overfill the space to force the leading edge of the polymer out the top of said space into said escape chamber to entrap residual gases into a severable offal member. The polymer encapsulates the cruciform-shaped actuator plate while filling the corner spaces thereof, except for fastener orifices which form adjacent the cruciform legs. A gate at the bottom of the mold assures laminar flow of polymer into the mold cavity.
