  • Patent number: 6698069
Abstract: A low profile cable tie, preferably a two-piece cable tie, has a low profile locking head with a lateral strap accepting channel and a strap preferably molded with a right angle bend that is retained in this state during non-use. The cable tie has a clean exterior appearance, including a top surface free of openings and a smooth lateral opening. With this cable tie, a strap accepting channel is provided in the locking head that is substantially parallel to a strap attachment axis. The strap accepting channel divides the locking head into a first part, which is secured to the strap, and a second part which contains a locking device. By providing the locking device on the second part, the first part can be made thinner, allowing the strap accepting channel to be closer to the cable bundle being tied.

Abstract: An extrusion apparatus for extruding visco-elastic materials includes an extruder head for preliminary shaping of a visco-elastic melt and a splice bar die assembly for final shaping of the visco-elastic melt. Both the extruder head and the die assembly have flow channels that include low elongational flow zones where elongational flow is reduced and controlled, thereby reducing and controlling the resulting shrinkage of the extrudate. Extrudate shrinkage can also be reduced and controlled by controlling the die swell of the visco-elastic melt by rotating the roller at a selected roller speed less than the melt speed.

Abstract: An apparatus for forming an extruded ice cream bar with variegated inclusions. The apparatus includes a main die having a section with sidewalls extending between upper and lower end portions and defining a cavity. In the preferred embodiment, a plurality of intermediate dies for insertion of the inclusions are positioned within the cavity and spaced from the sidewalls of the main die. The intermediate dies gradually and progressively change in cross-sectional shape from being round at the top to the desired shape of the inclusion at the bottom. As the ice cream flows through the cavity of the main die, it passes along and about the intermediate dies through which the inclusions are flowing. Each intermediate die is preferably fed by two tubes so that the final shape of the inclusion at the bottom of the intermediate die is fully and evenly filed.

  • Patent number: 6390797
Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus and method for introducing various additives in solid form into a soap mass for the ultimate manufacture of soap bars. Specifically, the invention is directed to producing soap bars having a multicolored or marbleized appearance and made from a variety of different colored soap materials. Soap pellets having a color are introduced into a soap plodder as is customary. A second or alternate color of soap pellet is separately introduced into the interior of the plodder just before that point where the helical screw of the plodder enters the barrel of the extruder portion of the plodder.

  • Patent number: 6391239
Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus and method for injecting an additive directly into a polymer melt stream. The method comprises supplying a melt flow of a polymeric host material to a die assembly having a thin-plate assembly and injecting at least one additive into at least one predetermined location in a cross-section of the melt flow of the polymeric host material while the melt flow passes through the die assembly. The method achieves uniform dosing of the one or more additives in the extrusion direction in the polymeric host material without homogeneously mixing the one or more additives and the polymeric host material. The apparatus for directly injecting one or more additives into a polymer melt stream comprises a pumping system, a die assembly having a thin-plate assembly, and a distribution line.

  • Patent number: 6309686
Abstract: A process for making an aerated, confectionery product of multiple colors includes, as a first step, preparing a slurry of water, sugar, and gelatin. The slurry is divided into at least first and second portions or batches having a defined color to provide a second color. A dye or colorant of a color is added to the second portion or batch to provide a second color. Each of the first and second batches are then individually aerated to form first and second aerated streams of first and second colors of substantially identical density and rheological properties. After aeration of the first and second portions, the first and second colored streams are fed to an extrusion die manifold, where they are extruded in disproportionate amounts to form a multicolored a rope having the first and second colors of unequal proportion. A starch anti-sticking agent is applied, and the rope is cut into individual pieces. The individual pieces are then dried to a 1 to 5% moisture content.

  • Patent number: 6294119
Abstract: A pneumatic tire includes a low conductive rubber portion forming at least a cap rubber portion of the tread rubber which provides a tread surface of the tire. A narrow high conductive rubber strip extends in a radial direction of the tire at a widthwise center region of the cap rubber portion, and is exposed to the tread surface to form a discharge path for allowing electrostatic charges of a vehicle body to be discharged to a road surface. An unvulcanized tread rubber for the tire is obtained by passing a high conductive unvulcanized rubber through a passage extending from an extruder unit to the back side of an extrusion orifice, to form at least part of the remaining potion of the tread rubber.

Abstract: A tread band for vehicle tires is manufactured by conveying a primary elastomer material (4) through an extrusion path (11, 15) defined by a preforming channel (15) followed by an extrusion outlet (11) formed in a die (10). The preforming channel (15) is defined in a preforming device (9) comprising a drawer (12) operatively engaging a preformer (13). Formed in the drawer (12) is an auxiliary channel (17) the end length (17b) of which opens at right angles into the extrusion path (11, 15), close to the extrusion outlet (11). An auxiliary elastomer material (5) conveyed to the auxiliary feeding channel (17) is homogeneously distributed by a coating effect under the lower surface of the tread band (4a) crossing the extrusion outlet (11).

  • Patent number: 6254924
Abstract: A pre-twisted cable pair and a method for processing such pairs into an electrical cable having improved electrical and mechanical properties is disclosed. At least one insulated wire for transmitting electrical signals is pre-twisted prior to pairing with another insulated wire. As the pre-twisted wires are paired by a conventional double-twist machine which imparts back-twist, the detrimental electrical effects caused by irregularities in the individual wires are cycled over a very short distance, resulting in a cable pair having lower structural return loss, near-end crosstalk, and insertion loss than wires paired without any pre-twist. These pre-twisted wires may be united into a jacketed electrical cable by a continuous-extrusion jacketing process in which an optimal dielectric constant is maintained around each individual cable pair.
