  • Patent number: 6991445
Abstract: A production line for the manufacture of strips of vinyl siding comprises an extruder extruding a strip of hot plastic material, such as vinyl. Next, an embosser supplies a decorative pattern to the heated strip. A cooling apparatus receives the heated strip and immerses the strip in a water bath to lower the temperature to a selected temperature range. The material, now reduced in temperature, is then passed to a former having dies creating joining runs in the cooled, embossed siding strip. Finally the strip runs through a final cooling tank which chills the strip to harden the joining runs created by the former. The cooling apparatus consists of a water bath tank with entry and exit guides for the strip, which are mounted above the level of the water in the water bath tank.

Abstract: A cool-dissolving apparatus for producing a solution from a mixture of polymer and solvent includes a double-structure pipe which is constructed of a cylinder and a jacket surrounding the cylinder. A mixture is fed in the cylinder, and a cooling medium flows in a space between the cylinder and the jacket oppositely to the mixture in the cylinder such that polymer dissolves to the solvent. The obtained solution is supplied in a heat-dissolving apparatus including a pipe for feeding the solution. In the heat-dissolving apparatus, the pipe extends horizontally or upwards in a feeding direction of the solution.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing plastic profiles comprised of at least one hard profile strand (2), for example, consisting of hard PVC, and of at least one soft profile strand (1), for example, consisting of soft PVC, whereby both profile strands (1, 2) are simultaneously produced by separate extrusion nozzles (20, 17a) and are cooled in a cooling device (16, 18). A secure joining can be effected using simple means by leading the soft profile strand (1) directly out or the extruder (17) and into a cooling bath (16, 18), inside of which it is completely cooled, and the hard profile strand (2) and the soft profile strand (1) are subsequently joined under pressure.

Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for manufacturing polymeric thin-walled tubular members, which are well-suited for use as vascular grafts. The apparatus of the present invention enables extrusion of a tubular member having an extremely thin wall thickness so as to facilitate passage through tortuous vascular passageways. The apparatus achieves uniform wall thickness in a tubular member by establishing and maintaining axial alignment of a ram having a concentrically disposed guide rod therein with a die supported in concentric relation to the guide rod.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for cooling an extruded hollow product. According to the invention, the extruder (1) is provided with means for sucking air through the pipe (2). The air to be sucked is thus in contact with the inner surface of the pipe (2), cooling the pipe from the inside. Therefore the cooling of the pipe (2) can be realized in an efficient and simple manner. By arranging the sucking to occur from the middle of the conical extruder (1), no weld line will be formed in the extruded product, and the extruder (1) can be cooled effectively from the inside. According to the invention, the heat contained by the air that has been sucked through the pipe (2) can also be utilized.

  • Patent number: 6547551
Abstract: In a conventional multilayer crosshead, only one pressure sensor is disposed in the inlet of the annular passage, preventing monitoring of membrane discontinuities; parison thickness is not constant; as the crosshead body is not cooled and parison temperature is high, a long time is required for cooling during blow molding, preventing the reduction of the molding cycle. A multilayer crosshead according to the present invention includes pressure sensors disposed in at least two positions of the annular passage so that the flow rate is controlled and monitored so as to eliminate the pressure difference between the pressure sensors, and parison temperature is lowered to a greater degree by a cooling jacket with a built-in heater disposed in the crosshead body so that a blow molding cycle is shortened.

Abstract: The invention relates to an adapter for an extruder for producing plastic profiles which is provided for the purpose of being disposed between an extrusion cylinder and an extrusion die, with the basic body of the adapter comprising a flow channel which is delimited at one outer side by a wall surface of the basic body and at one inner side by a deflection body which is rigidly connected with the basic body. A careful homogenization of the melt can be achieved in such a way that the deflection body is provided with a substantially spherical arrangement and is exclusively held by a holding pin which is situated downstream and is connected via bridges with the adapter.

Abstract: An apparatus for continuously forming thermoplastic adhesive cartridges. A molten thermoplastic adhesive supply provides a supply of molten adhesive to a pump downstream from the molten thermoplastic adhesive supply. The pump then provides a molten thermoplastic adhesive melt stream which passes through a screen filter downstream from the pump to prevent the discharge of impurities in the molten thermoplastic adhesive melt stream from the pump. A temperature-controlled conduit downstream from the pump then lowers the temperature of the molten plastic melt stream to closely above its softening point. A continuous molder located downstream from the melt pump for receives the molten plastic melt stream from the melt pump to form the thermoplastic adhesive cartridge continuously.

  • Patent number: 6530765
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus is provided for extruding ePTFE tube for use in medical applications. A tube of PTFE is extruded, preferably in an extrusion process, using counter-rotated die components. The die component is maintained at a constant temperature during processing. The resulting green tube has enhanced fibrous state formation in a direction perpendicular to the direction of extrusion. The PTFE green tube is then subjected to secondary operations such as stretching and expansion to yield medical product. The ePTFE tube structure is defined by nodes interconnected by elongate fibrils. Both the nodes and fibrils are substantially randomly tilted with respect to the longitudinal axis of the tube. This particular structure yields a tube which exhibits a high degree of radial tear strength useful in medical applications.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for making a dimensionally stable wood-thermoplastic composite material composed of a wood component and a thermoplastic component comprising the steps of forming a wood-thermoplastic mass at a temperature above the melting temperature of the thermoplastic component. The mass is then passed through a converging die to form a shaped extrudate profile having a cross sectional shape wherein at least a part of the converging die is maintained at a substantially higher temperature than that of the mass. The profile is then fed through a low friction thermally insulating land section, the land section having the substantially the same cross sectional shape as the exit end of the converging die. The profile is then quenched in a non-oxidizing environment to form a substantially dimensionally stable outer shell around the profile, the shell having a temperature below the melting temperature of the thermoplastic component.
