Publication number: 20130236592Abstract: A food product containing high affinity phosphate binders (calcium and magnesium) for the purpose of chelating phosphate forms ingested foods and preventing its absorption. The chelation of phosphate in the intestine is an important part of the management of patients with moderate to severe renal failure including those in the predialysis and the dialysis dependent stages. The medicinal food product is a palatable source of calcium and magnesium which if taken without meals can be used as means to supplement those ions/salts. This concept of “food as medicine” represents a major reinforcement in the prevention and management of the derangements of divalent ion metabolism present at all levels of renal insufficiency. Limiting the gastrointestinal absorption of phosphate and consequently preventing the elevation of plasma phosphate, retards the onset of renal osteodystrophy (a Metabolic Bone Disease) and soft tissue calcification.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 23, 2012Publication date: September 12, 2013Inventor: Cosme Cruz

Patent number: 8501251Abstract: A premix for hog feed and a method of feeding a hog that produces DHA and EPA enriched pork while avoiding or reducing negative effects to the taste, color, texture, aroma, pH and shelf life which are significant enough to make the pork unacceptable to consumers. One embodiment of the method of feeding a hog involves feeding a hog over several days with a hog feed supplemented with the premix. The premix includes marine-sourced docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and plant-sourced alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). The hogs are fed until their total DHA, EPA and ALA intakes are in a certain range per kilogram of the hog's weight. The hogs are then slaughtered and processed into pork products. This results in pork with an enrichment of omega-3 EFAs in the range of about 2.5% to about 4.5% of fat.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 2009Date of Patent: August 6, 2013Assignee: Grand Valley Fortifiers, Ltd.Inventors: Martin Clunies, James Ross, Ian Ross
