Patent number: 4828882Abstract: A process whereby particulate materials with a polymeric coating of controlled thickness are obtained by passing gas at a pre-determined temperature and flow rate substantially symmetrically through a bed of particles to create a coherent symmetrical spouting zone of fully-spouted, suspended particles is disclosed. The suspended particles are contacted with an atomized spray of polymer solution. The spray has a controlled flow rate and is confined to the spouting zone. As the process proceeds, the solvent evaporates from the fine droplets of the polymer solvent solution on contact or very quickly after contact of the polymer solvent solution with the particles. Structurally sensitive particulate material such as biomass is therefore only fleetingly contacted with solvent, on its outer shell only, and no substantial damage to the material can be effected by the solvent. Also, the coating solidifies quickly so that the little or no particle agglomeration or attrition occurs.Type: GrantFiled: March 16, 1987Date of Patent: May 9, 1989Assignee: Canadian Patents & Developments LimitedInventors: Marios Tsezos, Soo H. Patent number: 4284660Abstract: A method is disclosed for preventing stress corrosion cracking or metal embrittlement of a zirconium or zirconium alloy container that is to be coated on the inside surface with a layer of a metal such as copper, a copper alloy, nickel, or iron and used for holding nuclear fuel material as a nuclear fuel element. The zirconium material is etched in an etchant solution, desmutted mechanically or ultrasonically, oxidized to form an oxide coating on the zirconium, cleaned in an aqueous alkaline cleaning solution, activated for electroless deposition of a metal layer and contacted with an electroless metal plating solution. This method provides a boundary layer of zirconium oxide between the zirconium container and the metal layer.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 1978Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Robert E. Patent number: 4265945Abstract: Novel quaternary ureidomethyl phosphonium salts having the general formula ##STR1## are prepared by condensing a urea having the formula RNHC(O)NR'R" with a quaternary hydroxymethyl phosphonium salt having the formula (HOCH.sub.2).sub.4 P.sup.+ X.sup.- in a molar ratio of at least 2:1. The products, which are characterized by the absence of residual hydroxymethyl groups, are useful as finishing agents for imparting flame retardant properties to cotton fabrics.Type: GrantFiled: November 29, 1979Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of AgricultureInventor: Arlen W. Patent number: 4265944Abstract: Described is a method for decreasing the air pollution resulting from the application of paint by applying an organic solvent based paint and a water miscible organic solvent based thinner to a substrate thereby forming a gaseous effluent comprised of a mixture of air and gaseous organic solvent and gaseous thinner and passing the gaseous effluent into a gas absorbing means comprised of a non-reactive liquid solvent. Also described is a novel completely water miscible organic based solvent thinner.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 1978Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Assignee: Grow Group, Inc.Inventor: James W. Garner

Patent number: 4263350Abstract: A release surface prepared by treating a glass substrate with dimethyldichlorosilane and trimethylchlorosilane is disclosed, wherein the proportion of trimethylchlorosilane is sufficient to facilitate cleaning or residue from the release surface but insufficient to substantially diminish the release efficiency of the treated surface.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1979Date of Patent: April 21, 1981Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.Inventor: James L. Patent number: 4263392Abstract: Presensitized lithographic plates having a diazo layer are prepared such that they exhibit a photospeed rendering them suitable for ultra high speed operations including use within laser platemaking systems. These ultra high speed plates have a diazo layer that is exceedingly thin while still being generally uniformly distributed throughout the plate area. The process includes extracting a significant quantity of diazonuim compound or diazonium resin from a diazo layer on a presensitized plate substrate. Plates thus formed are useful in laser exposures for facsimile transmissions, as projection plates, as camera back plates, for step and repeat plate work, and where low intensity light sources are used in conjuction with very large plates.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1979Date of Patent: April 21, 1981Assignee: Richardson Graphics CompanyInventor: Thomas H. Patent number: 4263349Abstract: Corrosion resistance is provided to metal substrates by the application of a hydrophobic resinous substance containing slightly alkaline particles in suspension. When applied to the metal substrate surface the cured resin provides a controlled diffusion barrier to the particles contained therein. Upon exposure to a liquid medium containing dissolved acid salts the alkaline substance leaches through the coating to neutralize the solution. The corrosion resistant coating is especially effective as an automotive finish primer and an autobody undercoat.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1979Date of Patent: April 21, 1981Inventors: Richard A.
