  • Patent number: 10920044
Abstract: Sustainable thermoplastic carbohydrate-based polymeric materials, and sustainable plastic materials including an organic odor-reducing agent to counteract a slight burned carbohydrate odor resulting from inclusion of a carbohydrate-based polymeric material within the described materials. Such carbohydrate-based polymeric material may be starch-based, and the slight characteristic odor lent by such material may be that of a somewhat burned starch, such as a popcorn or caramel corn type odor. Applicant has found that this slight odor can be substantially removed by addition of a very small fraction of particular organic materials. 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde (vanillin) has been found to be particularly effective, even in very small concentrations. Other freeze-dried fruit extracts (e.g., strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, etc.) may similarly be used. As little as 20 ppm of the organic odor-reducing agent is sufficient to substantially remove the characteristic burned starch odor.

  • Patent number: 10814390
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a structural component having tailored material properties by applying an IR-absorbent coating to a substrate formed of a ferrous-based, aluminum-based, magnesium-based, or fiber reinforced composite material is provided. The coating is preferably formed of iron oxide (Fe3O4) decorated multiwall carbon nanotubes. Alternatively, the coating is wax-based or polymer-based and includes TriSilanollsooctylt POSS and additives. Different coating compositions may be applied to different zones of the substrate so that the emissivity coefficient varies along the substrate. The coated substrate is heated and formed between a pair of dies to achieve a complex shape or features. The IR-absorbent coating increases the infrared absorption rate during the heating step, which improves formability of the substrate.

Abstract: Disclosed is cross-linking process for cross-linking polymeric chains in a coating composition. In one embodiment the process utilizes a Hantzsch dihydropyridine reaction to form reaction products including cross-linking polymeric resin chains having beta-keto ester functions using a source of aldehyde and a source of ammonia or a primary amine to form a permanent dihydropyridine bond between the beta-keto ester functions. The novel cross-linking reaction can occur at lower temperatures compared to typical cross-linking reactions and can occur in aqueous solutions that have a neutral to mildly alkaline pH of from 6 to 11. The novel cross-linking reaction provides many advantages to performing cross-linking of polymeric chains in coating resins.

Abstract: This disclosure features use of a paper or polymer film that includes a slip agent that can transfer to its surfaces. Once the paper or film is pressed against a glass sheet, this will leave a thin surface roughness of slip agent that can prevent or reduce glass surface scratches from other surfaces or particles during shipping or finishing (e.g., cutting to size, conveyance of glass), thereby improving the yield of glass shipments between glass forming plants and customers. The thin discontinuous layer of slip agent remaining on the glass surface can be washed off easily in subsequent washing processes. The paper or film can have the slip agent imbibed within the paper or coated on it as a surface member.
