Abstract: A method of manufacturing a cementitious composite including: (1) mixing an extrudable cementitious composition by first forming a fibrous mixture comprising fibers, water and a rheology modifying agent and then adding hydraulic cement; (2) extruding the extrudable cementitious composition into a green extrudate, wherein the green extrudate is characterized by being form-stable and retaining substantially a predefined cross-sectional shape; (3) removing a portion of the water by evaporation to reduce density and increase porosity; and (4) heating the green extrudate at a temperature from greater than 65° C. to less than 99° C. is disclosed. Such a process yields a cementitious composite that is suitable for use as a wood substitute. Particularly, by using higher curing temperatures for preparing the cementitious building products, the building products have a lower bulk density and a higher flexural strength as compared to conventional products.

  • Patent number: 8283032
Abstract: The present invention relates to an electrical contact material having a surface layer made of a noble metal or an alloy having the noble metal as its main component, a method for manufacturing the same and an electrical contact using the same. Recently, electrical contact materials having excellent abrasion resistance are used for sliding electrical contacts such as a connector terminal of an automobile harness, a contact switch mounted in a cellular phone and terminals of a memory card. Although there have been known ones having an organic coating film composed of either aliphatic amine or mercaptan or a mixture of the both provided on the electrical contact material described above as the electrical contact materials having excellent abrasion resistance, they have had problems that even though they are effective with a low load of 0.5 N or below, abrasion accelerates when the load exceeds 0.5 N and sliding characteristics drop under a high-temperature environment.

Abstract: This invention relates to high surface area materials, such as nanoparticles, that are coated with metal ions. These modified nanoparticles have active sites that bind various gases and/or odorous compounds, thereby removing these compounds from a medium such as air or water. Metal ions are adsorbed onto the surface of the nanoparticle and bound strongly to the surface. By selection of the metal ion, specific gaseous compounds and/or odorous compounds can be targeted and removed efficiently and effectively from both aqueous phase and from the air. The modified nanoparticles are useful in numerous article of manufacture for industrial and consumer use.

Abstract: A process for securely binding the adjoining fibers of a fibrous material in the absence of the use of a phenol-formaldehyde reaction product is provided. A curable binding composition comprising a water-soluble intermediate reaction product having hydroxyl and carboxylic acid end groups that is capable of undergoing an esterification crosslinking reaction is provided. The intermediate reaction product is formed by the reaction of (i) a polyanhydride, and (ii) certain polyol crosslinkers other than an alkanolamine. Such crosslinkers have been found to yield a bound product that displays improved color (i.e., lighter color). Particularly preferred crosslinkers are triethylene glycol and tripropylene glycol. When applied to a fibrous material, the intermediate reaction product is reacted with crosslinking to form a cured reaction product. In a preferred embodiment the securely bound fibrous product is building insulation of good color that well resists water.

Abstract: Compositions and methods for fabrication or synthesis of high aspect ratio (up to >150) CdS:Mn/ZnS core/shell nanowires (CSNWs) is disclosed for the first time. The CSNW solvothermal synthesis involved two steps—the formation of Mn doped CdS core followed by the growth of a ZnS outer shell. The nanowire growth process is engineered in such a way that the ZnS layer grows radially onto the prematurely grown CdS:Mn core prior to the formation of its well faceted surface. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and other characterization techniques confirmed the formation of uniform, thin (5-8 nm in diameter) CSNWs with high aspect ratio up to >150. This solvothermal method is simple, versatile and useful in a large scale production process to synthesize thin ultra-long CSNWs with and without dopants.
