Patent number: 6447630Abstract: Applied to a substrate such as paper banknotes is a thread which includes a PET carrier layer with release layers on both surfaces of the carrier layer, and a metallic layer outward of one release layer. An adhesive layer lies outward of the metallic layer. When a substrate is brought into contact with the adhesive layer, the result is to bond the metallic layer to the substrate. Following this, the PET carrier layer is peeled away, leaving the metallic layer bonded to the substrate. An apparatus for accomplishing these steps includes means for bringing the substrate into contact with the adhesive layer, and means for peeling the PET carrier layer away so that it separates from the metallic layer at the adjacent release layer.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1999Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Agra Vadeko Inc.Inventors: John Nicholas Disano, Nigel P. Patent number: 6432501Abstract: The problems of applying ink jet inks to various known coating surfaces so as to overcome smearing, poor resolution and attack by water etc., is overcome by the use of the new ink jet receptive media. The media comprises in combination: (1) a waterproof ink jet receptive coating, (2) a primer coating, (3) a non-porous substrate, (4) a pressure sensitive adhesive coating, (5) a silicone coating and (6) a backer layer. The receptive coating comprises the combination of: (1) binder, (2) charge control agent, (3) cross-linking agent, (4) adhesion enhancing agent and (5) dispersant. The absorption of the ink jet ink to the substrate is maximized, thus attracting and fixing the ink and providing a waterproofing effect.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 2002Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: Chartpak, Inc.Inventors: Victor Yang, Norman P. Patent number: 6428869Abstract: A sheet or strip of discreet magnets disposed on a common backing and a method of manufacturing a plurality of discreet magnets detachably adhered to a common backing is provided. The method includes the passing of a magnetic substrate that is detachably adhered to a common backing in front of a die. The die is equipped with an internal ejector so that when the die is moved towards the substrate and the cutting edge of the die cuts the substrate, an internal ejector engages the cut portion of the substrate that forms a cut magnet. As the die is withdrawn from the substrate, the ejector maintains a pressing engagement against the cut magnet to prevent the cut magnet from being pulled off of the backing. A similar apparatus may be provided for a stripper disposed outside of the die to prevent waste substrate from being pulled off of the backing as the die is removed. Both the stripper and internal ejector are pulled off of the magnetic material after the die has been successfully removed.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1998Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Promotional Ideas, Inc.Inventors: Mehmet Sami Ozgen, Chris Bohlin

Patent number: 6358588Abstract: Tags having a metallic heft and processes for making them are described in which a first resin-based thermal mass transfer printer image is applied to a metallized polymer film, with or without an intervening translucent print receptive layer, and then a second resin-based thermal mass transfer printer image is applied to at least a portion of the first resin-based thernal mass transfer printer image. The first resin-based thermal mass transfer printer image has an opaque first color and the second resin-based thermal mass transfer printer image has an opaque second color, the opaque second color preferably selected to contrast with the first opaque color. These tags are useful as replacements for anodized aluminum asset tags, which are more difficult and expensive to produce and do not lend themselves to printing computer-generated indica such as a series of different bar codes. The disclosed and described tags can be cost-effectively manufactured in small quantities and yet have such variable indica.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1998Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: Brady Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Linda M. Patent number: 6331335Abstract: A self-adhesive strap to hold wires or other components permanently using a self-adhesive backed, flexible high strength carrier member as the main component of wire strap or harness. The strap has adhesive on the opposite side of the carrier member to facilitate bonding to a substrate, such as a wall. The strap replaces mechanically retained wire clips as straps. To apply the self-adhesive wire strap, first the back liner is removed and the adhesive is attached to the substrate; then the larger piece of liner is removed using the extended tab and the wire is placed against adhesive; and finally the strap is folded against itself and pushed together, adhesive to adhesive.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1997Date of Patent: December 18, 2001Assignee: Argent Automotive Systems, Inc.Inventor: Christopher S. Patent number: 6286871Abstract: A continuous process and apparatus are disclosed for applying an adhesive coating to one surface and a release coating to an opposite surface of sheets of previously embossed and optionally decoratively printed paper, and for drying the sheets and then stacking them for processing into individual pads of embossed, self-stick, removable sheets of notepaper. Individual sheets of embossed paper are fed onto a conveyor system, and the feed and conveyor speeds are regulated so that the sheets are in slightly overlapping relationship to form an artificial web as the sheets pass continuously through release coating and adhesive coating subassemblies which continuously apply release and adhesive coatings to opposite sides of the web. Conveyor speeds downstream of the coating subassemblies are regulated to separate the web into its individual coated and embossed sheets as they pass through a dryer.Type: GrantFiled: May 12, 1999Date of Patent: September 11, 2001Assignee: Carol Wilson Fine Arts, Inc.Inventors: Gary C.
