The core layer is composed of at least one resin impregnated sheet of core paper. The core paper is impregnated with a resin composed of phenol formaldehyde resin and wood molasses. In this manner, a substantial portion of the resin used to impregnate the core paper is replaced with wood molasses, which results in a reduction of the cost of manufacturing the decorative laminate. The decorative laminate is manufactured by preparing a resin impregnated decorative sheet and preparing at least one resin impregnated core sheet by impregnating a core sheet with a resin composition composed of phenol formaldehyde resin and wood molasses. The decorative sheet and the core sheet are then layered to form a laminate lay-up that is heated and pressed to consolidate and cure the laminate.

Abstract: The present invention provides multiple layer interlayers having a relatively soft inner layer and relatively stiff outer layers that can be laminated without unacceptable optical distortion and used in various multiple layer glass panel type applications. Multiple layer interlayers of the present invention have surface topography that is formed by embossing the exposed surface of the interlayer, or individual layers of the multiple layer interlayer, after formation of the interlayer or layers. The embossing process is carried out under temperature conditions that prevent the transfer of the embossing to inner layers of the interlayer. By precisely controlling the embossing of the interlayer, lamination of the interlayer with a rigid substrate does not lead to unacceptable optical distortion caused by the transfer of the surface topography through outer, stiffer layers into softer, internal layers of the interlayer.

Abstract: A polyetheretherketone film is used in the consolidation of a prepreg so that the film becomes incorporated into the consolidated prepreg, defines an outer layer of the consolidated prepreg and therefore provides the consolidated prepreg with advantageous properties. In one embodiment, a film may be used as a bagging material. In this embodiment, prepreg is positioned in a mould to define a precursor of a composite material. A bagging film is positioned next to the prepreg and a vacuum is applied via port to evacuate the space between the prepreg and film and induction heating is used to cause the resin in the prepreg to melt. In addition, the film yields and draws and this stretched film will cover the prepreg and act as a bagging material. Another embodiment addresses the problem of insertion and/or removal of an inflatable bladder in the manufacture of hollow articles and utilizes a gas filled thermoplastic bag.
