  • Patent number: 7060134
Abstract: A one-piece or otherwise unitary annular shim member made from a carbon material or a metallic is used to maintain a space between stacked annular preforms during a manufacturing process, such as densification. The one-piece structure advantageously simplifies the arrangement of the preforms in a process chamber and causes less deformation in the preforms. The carbon composition also provides beneficial thermal effects that improve the densification process. A debonding coating is provided on the carbon annular shim member in order to facilitate separation of the annular preforms from the shim members. The metallic annular shim member does not require a debonding coating.

  • Patent number: 6983857
Abstract: A venting cap liner used in a pressurized container closure arrangement. The cap liner includes a multi-layer sandwich structure having a first layer and a generally flat resilient intermediate layer. The layers include at least one perforation extending through the layers to enable gas flow therethrough. The first layer has a first surface including at least one channel extending from one edge of the first layer to another edge of the first layer. The intermediate layer is responsive to a gas pressure level in the container such that, at a first selected pressure level, the perforation extending through said second layer opens to allow gas to flow through the perforation and at a second selected pressure level, the intermediate layer expands to close the perforation thereby resisting gas flow.

Abstract: Ordered elastomeric composites comprise an ordered arrangement of a number of first elastomeric phases distributed uniformly within a continuous matrix second elastomeric phase. The second phase can be formed from an elastomeric material that is relatively harder than an elastomeric material that is used to form the first phases. Each first phase can be in the form of a core having a defined length and diameter, and the second phase can be formed from a number of shells that each surround a respective core. In a preferred embodiment, the arrangement of cores and shells are aligned coaxially with one another to provide a cellular structure. Ordered elastomeric composites of this invention can be used to form part of or an entire elastomeric seal, e.g., in the form of an annular ring adapted for use in a rotary cone drill bit.

Abstract: An unvulcanized raw rubber is provided, to which magnetic ferrite powder is added. A resulting mixture composed of the unvulcanized raw rubber and magnetic ferrite powder is passed through a rolling machine or an extruding machine such that the mixture is formed into a sheet blank that contains the magnetic ferrite powder aligned regularly in a particular orientation. Alternatively, the resulting mixture may be first passed through an extruding machine and then through a rolling machine. The sheet blank is then stamped across a planar direction such that a ring-like sheet is formed. The ring-like sheet, along with a supplemental ring, is placed inside a metal mold, where the ring-like sheet and supplemental ring are compressed in an axial direction, while applying heat thereto, so that the ring-like sheet is vulcanized and joined to the supplemental ring. Finally, the vulcanized ring-like sheet is magnetized so that S poles and N poles appear alternately around its circumference.

Abstract: An encoder made of rubber material in which the S-poles and the N-poles are alternately magnetized in circumference, whose magnetic force is strong and whose variation of the magnetic force is slight in the circumferential direction when it is magnetized. And a manufacturing method thereof. A ring shaped rubber compound made of unvulcanized rubber material into which magnetic powders are mixed and having thickness t1 of 1.5 times to 5 times thicker than the thickness t of the encoder made of rubber material as the final product is vulcanizingly molded. In this vulcanizingly molding process, the thickness of ring shaped rubber compound is reduced to one fifth (⅕) to two thirds (⅔) by compressing the ring shaped rubber compound in the axial direction under high temperature. And then, vulcanizingly molded one is magnetized S-poles and N-poles alternately in circumference.

Abstract: A process for producing low birefringence and low stress thermoplastic polycarbonate film having a birefringence of less than about 20 nm from polycarbonate resin. The process consists of feeding a polycarbonate resin to an extruder, melting the polycarbonate resin, extruding the melted polycarbonate resin downwardly through an extrusion nozzle having the configuration of, forming a continuous film of melted resin, advancing the melted resin downwardly by essentially gravity into a gap between two calendering rolls which lie in a plane essentially perpendicular to the downward extrusion of the resin, cooling the polycarbonate film to below its glass transition temperature and advancing the cooled polymer to storage. The calendering rolls lie in a plane essentially perpendicular to the downward extrusion of the melted resin to wherein one roll is in a plane at an angle of about 30° from said perpendicular. The film is useful for optical media applications.

Abstract: A glass substrate for a data recording medium is disk-shaped and has a circular bore at the center portion. At least one of an inner circumferential end surface and an outer circumferential end surface is smooth. The smooth surface is formed by exposing at least one of the inner circumferential end surface and the outer circumferential end surface of a glass disk to a laser beam. During laser machining, the end surface of the glass disk that is exposed to the laser beam is heated and melted. Therefore, minute cracks, formed on the end surface of the glass disk before the laser machining, are eliminated. As a result, the strength of the glass substrate is maintained without a chemical strengthening treatment. This eliminates disadvantages caused by the chemical strengthening step.
