Ni Or Ni-base Underlayer Patents (Class 428/832.3)
  • Publication number: 20140306303
Abstract: A magnetic thin film deposition having PMA (perpendicular magnetic anisotropy) is a multilayered fabrication of materials having differing crystal symmetries that smoothly transition by use of a seed layer that promotes symmetry matching. An interface between layers in the deposition, such as an interface between a layer of MgO and an Fe-containing ferromagnetic layer, is a source of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy which then propagates throughout the remainder of the deposition by means of the symmetry matching seed layer.

  • Patent number: 7632580
Abstract: Perpendicular magnetic recording media and methods of fabricating perpendicular magnetic recording media are described. The perpendicular magnetic recording medium of one embodiment includes an interlayer, an underlayer, and a perpendicular magnetic recording layer. The interlayer is comprised of a Ni-alloy having the characteristics of being nonmagnetic and having an FCC structure. The alloying element for the Ni-alloy may comprise one of V or Cr, or may comprise one of V, Cr, or W. The concentration of the alloying element is set such that the concentration of the alloying element is high enough to make the Ni-alloy non-magnetic, while low enough to maintain an FCC structure for the Ni-alloy.

  • Patent number: 7149045
Abstract: A magnetic recording device including a longitudinal magnetic recording medium. The longitudinal magnetic recording medium includes a magnetically soft underlayer disposed under a longitudinal recording layer. A perpendicular write head is utilized to write data to the longitudinal magnetic recording medium wherein the longitudinal recording layer is disposed within an effective write gap formed by the perpendicular write head and the underlayer. The longitudinal component of the perpendicular write head is sufficient to switch the magnetic grains in the recording layer in the presence of the perpendicular field. The magnetic recording medium can have a high areal density and improved magnetic properties.
