Abstract: The present invention is directed to a fishing rod (10) that is capable of providing a selectively variable action. That is, the rod (10) can be changed from a stiffer to a softer action not only while the rod is being prepared for casting a lure but also while the rod is being used to play a fish. The rod (10) has a sheath (13) with a handle (11) secured thereto such that the sheath (13) extends forwardly of the handle (11). The line and tip guides (14 and 15) are affixed to the sheath (13). The interior of the sheath (13) defines a hollow, preferably conical, cavity (25) that extends for at least one half the length of the sheath (13). A blade (30) that is preferably tapered in conformity with the taper of the cavity (25) within the sheath (13) is received within the cavity (25), and means (31) are provided selectively to translate the blade (30) longitudinally within the cavity (25) and thereby selectively vary the action of the rod (10).

Abstract: A cylindrical reel seat for a fishing rod comprising a cylindrical body having a cavity which receives one end of a reel base; a slidable sleeve adapted to fasten another end of the reel base; a reel base mount formed at the top of the cylindrical body; and a soft member covering the surface of the cylindrical body except the reel base mount, the range of sliding of the slidable sleeve and the hood portion of the cavity. The cylindrical body is provided with flanges adapted to hold the end and edges of the soft member.

Abstract: Sport fishing rods such as whip rods, cast rods having a good grip adapted to each user for more efficiency and improved comfort. The process of the "do it yourself" type is comprised of a set of 5 components which are differentiated by separate bags, and which amalgamate according to a predetermined method of using and being adjusted by moulding prints on the original handle. The process may also be applied to other instruments such as shooting guns, bows, handles for ski sticks, and all personal objects requiring a cold moulding.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle having a butt grip segment and a reel seat segment, with at least the butt grip segment being laterally offset at a forward location thereon behind the reel seat segment, on the opposite side of the reel seat segment from that on which the crank of a reel would be positioned. The rear end of the reel seat segment may also be laterally offset on the same side of the handle to provide a complimentary, offset contour merging with the laterally offset butt grip segment. Such a laterally offset fishing rod handle may also be provided with a curved surface on the offset side of the butt grip, with the curved surface being snuggly received within the palm of the user's hand, when palming the butt grip, reel seat, and reel.

Abstract: A strip made of resiliently yieldable material is attached to the handle of a fishing rod and is formed with at least one finger hole enabling the fisherman to maintain a secure hold on the handle. In one embodiment, a portion of the strip is wrapped partially around the handle and is formed with two holes which tightly grip the handle. In another embodiment, the strip is a band which is cinched around the handle and which is formed with a downwardly projecting portion having a finger hole.

Abstract: A fishing rod is provided with a flat reel seat formed on the upper side of a hollow tubular rod made of a reinforcing fiber impregnated with a thermosetting synthetic resin. A handle is securely fitted to a tubular extended portion integrally formed with the rear portion of said reel seat in such a manner that part of said tubular extended portion is exposed. Hoods for fixing the feet of a reel are mounted in front and rear of said reel seat so as to face each other.

Abstract: A butt structure of the type used in combination with fishing rods and substantially large fishing reels used for heavy duty deep sea sport fishing and the like which is specifically designed and adapted for both removable and adjustable connection and support of a reel seat tube. The reel seat tube is structured for removable support of a fishing reel and secure fixed engagement to a fishing rod such that when the entire assembly is stored, the fishing reel remains secured to the fishing rod thereby allowing for the rigging attached to both the reel and the rod to remain in place while the butt structure may be removed or specifically positioned in an out-of-the-way orientation.

Abstract: A fishing rod having a handle including a pistol grip located rearwardly from and beneath a reel seat for holding a casting reel, and having a butt extension member supported rearwardly and spaced upwardly apart from the reel seat. A butt extension support limb is curved rearwardly and laterally away from the reel seat to support the forward end of the butt extension member without interfering with the fisherman's wrist and forearm during casting of bait or playing a hooked fish using the rod.

Abstract: A fishing rod and reel system including a fulcrum gripping portion which also aligns the rod and a leverage gripping portion for providing lengthy and arcuate line castings with also an arm or body brace. The fishing pole has a long slender body with a longitudinal center line. The leverage gripping portion and a tip are on opposite ends of the fishing pole. The fulcrum gripping portion is positioned between the leverage gripping portion and the tip. A user places a first hand on the fulcrum gripping portion and the second hand on the leverage gripping portion, the first hand is held in one general position with the user's wrist allowing the fishing pole to pivot about the first hand. The second hand in contact with the leverage portion is quickly moved along an arcuate path about the first hand thereby casting line and lure or weight from the tip of the fishing rod.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle having an upper elongate segment, a lower elongate segment, and an arcuate connecting segment joining the upper and lower segments so that the handle has generally a U-shape. The upper and lower segments include upper and lower portions shaped to be grasped by a human hand, and the lower segment includes a reel seat positioned forwardly of the lower portion. The handle may be grasped comfortably by both hands while casting such that the hands are positioned in different planes. In a preferred embodiment, the handle is weighted so that the center of gravity of a combination of the handle and an associate rod shaft lies along the upper segment directly across from the reel seat.

Abstract: The rod includes a rod body tapered toward its tip and a handle coupled with the root of the rod body. A cylindrical relay member tapered at an angle greater than that of the rod body is fitted onto a coupling portion at the outer periphery of one end of the handle. The relay member includes at one end thereof a transmission portion for receiving the motion of a hooked fish through the rod body. As a result, an angler can sense the motion of a hooked fish through the cylindrical relay member by his hand gripping the handle.

Abstract: A finger protector for the hand grip area of a reel, primarily of the spinning variety. In ordinary usage, a spinning reel is attached to the underside of a bait casting fishing rod by a coupling sleeve for and aft of the saddle of the reel attachment member, and a locking nut binding the sleeves and saddle together, and holding the reel in place on the underside of the rod. The rod and reel are then used for casting in the usual manner, except that the reel attachment arm, which is usually a hard surface rigid metal T shaped structure, is now contoured and cushioned to provide a more efficient and substantially more comfortable hand grip area.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle assembly wherein the rim of a molded foregrip engages the foot of a fishing reel to secure it to the rod handle. The rim is reinforced by inserting a reinforcing ring into a slot and securing it with a suitable adhesive.

Abstract: Novel blank-through casting handles are disclosed. The casting handle is to integrate a body and a grip into one united member by concave-convex engagement, said body and grip being separately bonded to a rod in the prior art, whereby the thus engaged portion serves to receive the torsional force to prevent it from acting upon a bonding layer. The bore of the reel mount and recession, and the bore of the handle grip and projection are eccentric with respect to the reel mount and handle grip.

Abstract: A heated handle for a fishing pole, having an aluminum tubular body received in an internal chamber in the handle for containing a dry fuel element. Both the handle and the tubular body have ventilating openings. The tubular body has a lesser diameter than the internal chamber to form an air space about the body which prevents the handle from overheating, but permits the fuel element to burn.

Abstract: According to the disclosure a transmitter assembly is provided having a transmitter member, which is preferably separate from and cooperates with both a rod blank and a rod handle. In a preferred form the transmitter member extends within a hollow portion of the rod blank. A transmitter element is interposed between an inside surface bounding the hollow portion of the rod blank and the transmitter member to effectively conduct vibrations imparted through the rod blank to the transmitter member. The transmitter member is associated with the rod handle so that a user can effectively sense vibration of the transmitter member.

Abstract: A multi component butt of the type designed for use in combination with a fishing rod used for trolling from the back of boats generally some distance from shore. The butt includes an elongated shank portion comprising a major length of the subject butt and having a hollow interior portion of substantially straight line, linear configuration wherein the hollow interior portion has a substantially common inner diameter extending along a vast majority of its length. A gimble is press fitted into one end of the shank portion and a guide tube is press fitted into the opposite end so as to protrude outwardly therefrom to accomplish a bonded fixed engagement with reel seat tube on which a reel used in combination with a finishing rod is mounted. One or more additional bushings may be disposed, through press fitting, on the interior of the shank portion for further retention and stability of the end of the rod passing into the interior of the shank portion through the guide tube.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle having a butt grip segment and a reel seat segment with both segments contoured to provide outwardly curved, laterally offset complimentary projections on one side of the handle in the area where the forwardly disposed reel seat joins the front end of the butt grip. The contoured projections merge to provide a continuous, smoothly contoured projection adapted to fit comfortably into the palm of the user's hand when palming the butt grip, reel, and reel seat. The curved palming grip projeciton, which may take the form of a partial helix, affords improved mechanical advantage towards resisting rod twisting. In combination with a rod blank extending through the reel seat segment and into the butt grip segment, strength, light weight construction, and sensitivity are achieved.

Abstract: A fixing device for a fishing rod is used for joining a inner tube and an outer tube. The inner tube is slidably received within the outer tube and can be fixed onto the outer tube firmly. The fixing device includes a fixing piece or coupling operatively mounted on the outer tube and a packing ring made of flexible material which is urged to grasp the inner tube by the fixing piece.

Abstract: A fishing rod is provided which is formed of a handle having a fishing reel mounting portion, a grip, and a rod body tapered toward its tip. The larger diameter side of the rod body includes a tubular fitting portion having a tapered portion increasing gradually in diameter at a rate of change larger than that of the rod body. The tubular fitting portion is fitted onto the outer periphery of the handle and is coupled integrally therewith. A manufacturing method is also provided for forming the rod body integrally with the tubular fitting portion.

Abstract: An electrically heated handle, particularly for fishing rods, has an elongated thermally conductive shell enclosing an interior chamber in which is located a solid body of a material having high electrical resistance, such as Steatite, defining a heater core having its entire outer surface in heat transfer engagement with the shell. An elongated electric heating coil, e.g., of Nichrome, extends longitudinally through the interior of the heater core and is connected to an external power source through a switch and power supply conductors extending through the rear end portion of the handle. The front end portion of the handle is formed with an elongated socket chamber thermally insulated from the interior chamber and adapted to receive and fit over the butt end of a fishing rod. Once the heater core of the handle is initially heated, the heat is stored for slow dissipation to the handle and hand of the holder, requiring infrequent replenishing of electric current to the electric heating coil.

Abstract: A heated handle structure for a fishing rod comprises an outer cylindrical container attached to the end of the rod, an inner cylindrical container for receiving a solid fuel stick, the inner container being rotatably mounted in the outer container, registrable vents in the respective container walls, the degree of opening of which is adjusted by relative rotation of the containers in order to vary the amount of heat supplied by the fuel stick, and a spring-loaded adjustment mechanism between the containers for releasably retaining them in selected angular positions of adjustment.

Abstract: A fishing rod holder in the shape of a frusto-conical cylinder, having the larger frustrum open for receiving the fishing rod handle. Near the opposite frustrum from the opening is a pivotally mounted cup having a horizontally mounted pin rigidly fixed to cup. The larger frustrum and conical angle are selected to be that which is necessary to strike a fish. A fishing rod is placed in the holder, the butt end of the rod's handle resting on the pin (a slot may be placed in the rod's handle to receive the pin), and, when a fish bites, a fisherman can immediately strike the fish by pulling the rod backwards through the conical angle.

Abstract: An improved fishing rod handle construction which is shaped to conform to the grip of the user. The handle is offset from the axis of the fishing rod. In addition, in one embodiment the handle is at an angle to the axis of the fishing rod. In another embodiment the handle takes a left-handed or right-handed helical form. The rod shaft runs all the way through the handle for greater strength and sensitivity than conventional offset handles. The handle provides a mechanical advantage over a straight handle in addition to greater comfort and conformity to the shape of the grip of a user.

Abstract: A fishing rod having a tubular rod section and an integral handle-reel seat. The handle-reel seat includes an insert in the form of a reinforcing rod on which the handle is molded in situ. The reinforcing rod extends out of the handle for frictional engagement and receipt within the hollow interior of the rod section to secure the rod section to the handle. The interior of the rod section receiving the insert is tapered, as is the extending portion of the insert, to ensure that good frictional engagement between the rod section an insert results irrespective of wear on the engaging surfaces.

Abstract: The casting rod and handle assembly disclosed has greater sensitivity to a fish striking and on the fish line associated with the rod. The assembly includes a rod blank (45) extending entirely through a handle body (12) and through a hand grip (38), preferably of the offset period grip type. An upper exposed rod portion (51) in the reel seat (15) of the handle body is provided for contacting the reel and a lower exposed rod portion (52) opposite the reel seat is effective to transmit rod vibrations to the hand of a user gripping the hand grip.

Abstract: A fishing rod butt which fits onto the end of a fishing rod and which has a pivoting body support opposite the fishing rod which pivots so that, when the fishing rod butt is held against the body of the fisherman, as during game fishing, the pressure of the fishing rod butt, which would normally be felt over a very small (approximately one and one-half square inch) area of the abdomen, is effectively spread over a larger area of the fisherman's abdomen, thus affording comfort during fishing. Included are three unique mechanisms for locking the pivoting body support of the fishing rod butt in position with respect to the main butt structure.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle reel seat inside the handle has a first cavity near the front of the handle. A second cavity behind the first opens through the wall of the handle. A movable closure covers this opening. A slide portion has edge-located ribs received in guide grooves in the handle. An unribbed portion is hinged to the ribbed portion and can be pulled outward to a position transverse to the rod handle for use as a slide handle to push and pull the slide between cavity-opening and cavity-covering positions to enable the installation or removal of a reel.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle assembly with a hollow handle into which the base of a rod is secured and into which a series of attachable and interchangeable storage compartments, the bottom of each storage compartment forming the top of the next storage compartment by attachable means, may be inserted slideably into a hollow handle with attachable means in the end cap attaching to the hollow handle and with additional attachable means in the end cap attaching to a storage compartment.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle assembly including an elongated handle member having an elongated groove formed in the external surface of the handle member for receiving an elongated fishing rod or rod member so that the rod member surface projects outwardly sufficiently that the hand of the fisherman holding the handle member will be in contact with the rod member. A clamp member is secured about the handle member for securing the rod member co-extensively within the groove, and also, preferably, securing a reel seat of a fishing reel directly and contiguously against the exposed surface of the rod member.

Abstract: A removable hand grip for use on a fishing rod handle of the type having two axial shiftable rings for mounting a spinning or similar fishing reel having a T-shaped mounting bracket. The hand grip has a generally U-shaped cross-section and a tapering upper surface along the longitudinal axis thereof with a transverse convex exterior surface. In the preferred embodiment, the hand grip is removably secured to the fishing rod handle on the reel mounting portion of the handle opposite the reel mounting bracket. Alternatively, the hand grip may be formed integrally with the fishing rod handle.

Abstract: A fishing rod having a handle which stores a bolt having a pointed shank or spike that can be axially extended from the handle to be extended into the ground or engaged in other structure to support the fishing rod, as when a hook is being baited or the rod is left unattended, or the like. A locking arm is provided fixed to the shank of the bolt for movement thereof and to releasably secure the shank in the stored or the extended position. The pole portion of the fishing rod can have an axial passage for accommodation of the fishing line.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle and fastener for releasably securing a reel and rod to a handle. The handle is constructed and arranged to engage a mounting foot of a fishing reel when the reel is positioned on the handle. A reel retaining element is arranged to abut the foot of the reel for retaining the reel on the handle. A threaded screw engages the reel retaining element in a manner to permit only partial withdrawal of the screw from the reel retaining element preventing loss of the screw or the reel retaining element. The reel retaining element may be loosened to position the reel foot between the retainer element and the rod handle or remove the reel foot therefrom.

Abstract: An integral fishing rod, handle and reel seat assembly. The handle and reel holder is molded of nylon in situ on the distal end of an extruded fiberglass rod. The distal end of the rod extends for substantially the full length of the handle to serve as reinforcement for the handle.

Abstract: A fishing rod combination with a finger grip for improved communication of rod flexing due to line action to a user. The finger grip includes a body portion with a centrally disposed opening or bore for intimately receiving the rod. The finger grip is preferably graphite when used with a graphite rod, and an essentially integral structure is provided by bonding the body portion to the rod with a mixture of epoxy glue and graphite particles.

Abstract: A reel mounting handle having a reel foot holding member slidably disposed in a guide member extending from a reel mounting portion. The holding member is of a cross shape in cross section, the upper and lower major projections being extended out from the openings longitudinally formed in the guide member. The guide member is formed with a bore along the length thereof to slidably receive the holding member. The bore has substantially the same cross sectional shape as that of the minor projections of the movable member. The major projections are formed with threads at the peripheral end surfaces thereof, respectively to engage a sleeve rotatably disposed adjacent the reel mounting portion.

Abstract: A fishing rod holder is provided comprised of a support member having a lower end adapted to be driven into a supporting surface, e.g. sand on a beach. The upper end of the support member is adapted to be pivotally secured to a fishing rod. The fishing rod holder is further comprised of a variable angle retaining means attached to the support member. The variable angle retaining means functions to vary and retain a support angle between the fishing rod and support member and enables the support member to freely close upon the handle of the fishing rod.

Abstract: A fishing rod and reel mounting handle is disclosed, wherein a trigger is pivotally secured to a body of the handle. The trigger has a firsrt and a second position, at which the trigger is locked, respectively. The first position of the trigger is at the trigger extending position adapted to mount a spin cast reel on the handle, while the second position thereof is at the trigger retracted position adapted to mount a spinning reel on the handle for providing easy grip of the handle.

Abstract: An improved handle and reel seat for a fishing rod comprising a single grippable handle member including a forward and a butt end thereon, the body member being elongated and having a continuous, generally circular outer surface in axial cross section. An opening in this outer surface connects with a first hidden inner cavity in the body member adapted to seat the reel feet on a T-shaped fishing reel support. A second cavity and matching slide member extend from the butt end of the body member and connect with this first cavity, with a butt cap and washer adapted to compress the slide member within this second cavity to securely support and seat the reel feet within the first cavity and opening.

Abstract: An elongated hollow tubular internally coated casting rod through which a fishing line is passed employing a novel handle for storing a magnetic line threading means and which handle cooperates to quickly attach and detach a reel mechanism to and from the rod and positions the hand of the user for optimum reel control with minimum fatigue.

Abstract: A fishing rod and handle are disclosed in which there is no twisting of the rod in the fisherman's hand while handling a large fish; no twisting of the eyes of the rod; longer, smoother, and more accurate casts can be made; and in which friction and line wear are reduced. The fishing rod and handle comprise a rod, the handle having a lower portion and an upwardly extending forward portion, means for securing a reel of fishing line to the lower portion, means for securing the rod to the upper end of the forward portion, and the upwardly extending forward portion having an opening therethrough below the rod. Downwardly extending eyes are secured to the rod and spaced along its length and adjacent its tip, so that the fishing line extends from the reel, through the opening and through the eyes below the rod in a substantially straight line.

Abstract: A fishing rod assembly includes an elongated hollow fiberglass rod having an end plug secured to its butt or handle end, the end plug having an eyelet extending into the rod to which fishing line is attached. The fishing line includes a length of elastic line attached to the end plug and retained within the rod bore, and a length of nonelastic line coupled to the elastic line by means of a coupler and extending from the tip end of the hollow rod. The coupler coacts with a limit structure within the rod adjacent the tip end to prevent the elastic line from passing out of the tip end; and the limit structure may be a transverse pin or other internal protuberance such as a sleeve. A stop attached to the nonelastic fishing line coacts with the tip into the rod to limit withdrawal of the line into the rod and fix the limit of maximum contraction of the elastic line. An external finger projects from the rod tip end to coact with a locking loop in the line and fix the length of line which extends from the tip end.

Abstract: An eyeless fishing rod including a holder portion which may be adjusted for alignment of a fishing line guide with reels of different sizes to allow only a minimum amount of rubbing friction against the line and without exposing the line to any sharp edges that might cut the line or cause the same to bind. The reel is secured to the holder portion by an overcenter cam lock mechanism which may be adjustably positioned so that different sized reel base plates may be accommodated, either by positioning the cam mechanism in slots of different depths or by adjusting a set screw. A roller guide may be provided at the outer end of the rod portion to reduce drag or any binding which may occur when heavy loads are placed upon the fishing line. A handle extension may be attached to the holder portion for added leverage and to provide additional watertight storage space.

Abstract: An integral butt and reel seat for an offshore trolling rod is made by swaging a unitary tubular member to form a rearwardly tapering butt section, a transition section tapering forwardly from a forward end of the butt section to a decreased diameter and a cylindrical reel seat section that extends forwardly from the transition section and has a forward end thereof threaded for reception of an adjustable threaded reel hood. A second reel hood is fixed to the reel seat section and the forward end of the tubular member is sealed by means of a plug inserted deep within the reel seat section and provided with a forwardly projecting rib that aligns a rod ferrule slidably received within the forward end of the integral member. A gimbal knock is fixed to and seals the rear end of the integral member.

Abstract: A fishing rod handle assembly has a forward portion for engaging one end of a rod blank, an intermediate reel seat portion to which a reel is to be fastened and a rearward portion including a butt grip. The forward and reel seat portions are positioned along a common longitudinal axis which extends through the rod blank while the butt grip is offset therefrom.

Abstract: The jigging pole of the present invention includes a tapered and curved, stiffly resilient rod shank having a handle at one end and integral line guide defined by an aperture formed at an angle of approximately 45.degree. through the opposite tip end. The rod shank is pre-formed with the tip end curved such that the fishing line extends vertically downward when the pole handle is held in an approximately horizontal position. Such construction provides a compact jigging pole which readily transmits the forces applied to the fishing line to the fisherman to provide a better feel of the line as well as improved jigging action utilizing the handle.

Abstract: An automatic line release mechanism is attached to a hollow handle of a spinning rod within which handle the rod is free to flex. The line release includes a pivotally mounted trigger which holds the line between the reel and the first line guide prior to making a cast. The trigger is automatically moved to a line releasing position by tension in the line and bending of the rod during casting. A cam locking means is released by a sliding bar member connected by a resilient wire to the rod within the hollow handle. The effective length of the wire is changed in response to flexure of the rod to unlock the trigger at the proper time in the cast.

Abstract: A novel keyholder for holding a set of keys upon keychains, the keyholder including a case and closure cap that contains all the paraphenalia needed for a sports fisherman to go fishing and which includes a miniature collapsible fishing rod, a reel of fishing line and a collection of conventional fishing hooks, lures and keyring fish hooks that are attachable to the line, the keyholder being connected to a clip for hooking on a person's belt, or by means of a heavy bead chain with a coupling being fitted around a wrist when casting out a fishing line.

Abstract: A rod chucking handle for fishing rods has a front extension having an axial hole for receiving a butt end of a rod, a fixing sleeve screwed over the front extension, an annular groove formed between the end of the extension and the sleeve in such an arrangement as to change its width by movement of the fixing sleeve and an elastic clamping ring disposed in the annular groove and configurated such that the elastic clamping ring is deformed into pressure contact with the outer peripheral surface of the butt end of the rod for joining the fishing rod with the handle by narrowing the width of the annular groove.

Abstract: A fishing rod assembly, which has a handle part and an adapter part, being two separate pieces. The handle has a socket at one end with a threaded shaft extending upwardly from the bottom of the socket. The adapter has a plug portion with a threaded bore extending inwardly from the face of said plug. In assembly, the plug of the adapter is closely inserted within the socket and the bore and shaft are threadably engaged so that the two parts are securely interlocked. A rod is mounted to the adapter in bonding relationship, and various adapters with different types of rods may be interchangeably mounted to the handle.
