  • Patent number: 5429176
Abstract: A thermal radiation baffle for apparatus for use in directional solidification of crystalline material, to be mounted at one end of a furnace, and to allow a mould containing the material in molten form to pass through, has at least one clamped layer of interconnected flexible strips of refractory material. Each such layer has an ordered construction, for example, with the strips being interwoven, or knitted; and has one or more slits therein. At least substantially the whole of each slit is inclined at a significant angle to the strips, so that the strips do not become detached or worn in use, but the layer is capable of resiliently engaging the sides of, for example, an irregularly shaped mould. A slit may be provided between two separate, but adjacent, pieces of the layer.

  • Patent number: 5290189
Abstract: Modifications are provided to a standard, batch type industrial heat treat furnace of a hot wall design which permit the furnace to be operated efficiently at high temperatures. The furnace is of a cylindrical design having a forward heat treat chamber and a rearward plenum chamber with a flat bulkhead plate in-between the chambers. The bulkhead has exit and inlet openings permitting wind mass to flow to the heat treat chamber and back to the plenum chamber. The bulkhead has a plurality of radially extending slits formed therein which permit the bulkhead to remain flat despite temperature and pressure gradients resulting in expansion/contraction of the bulkhead. Additionally, the furnace includes a closed end muffle within the heat treat chamber into which work to be heat treated is placed. A water cooled spring biasing support is provided for the closed end of the muffle to resist downward deformation of the muffle at high temperatures.

Abstract: An improved wall construction system for refractory furnaces is disclosed. The system includes an outer support structure into which are incorporated a plurality of connecting pin receiving sleeves or apertures. The system further includes a plurality of regularly-shaped bricks which have engaging members and receiving cavities on the ends of the bricks and on the upper and lower surfaces of the bricks. The engaging members and receiving cavities are adapted to interlock the bricks relatively to each other to preclude lateral movement. The system further includes a plurality of anchoring members which are adapted to be received between an engaging member and a receiving cavity of adjacent bricks. The anchoring members further extend out from the bricks and include a connecting pin shaped and sized to engage within the apertures in this first support structure in order to anchor the brick wall system to the outer support system in use.

  • Patent number: 5259758
Abstract: An industrial oven has insulated walls and insulated doors each including an inner shell connected to an outer shell by a plurality of pins extending through oversized holes in sheet metal plates forming the inner shell. The metal plates are simple metal sheets which can be easily sheared to size. The pins can compensate for significant misalignment between the inner and outer shells and do not require any modification of the insulation layers prior to mounting on the pins. Measures are also taken to permit expansion of the floor and air distribution system without requiring complex interconnections of the floor plates or of the air distribution system to the oven walls. Elements which are exposed to both hot and cold temperatures are designed so as not to warp or buckle under the temperature differentials between the inner and outer shells of each oven wall.

  • Patent number: 5258101
Abstract: A pyrolytic converter utilizing a rotatable drum surrounded by an outer drum support structure and disposed in an oven chamber pyrolyzes materials including plastic waste, tires, materials from automobile shredding operations, containers and trays of plastic material, rubber, leather, garbage, sewage sludge, coal, oil shale, broken asphalt and the like. These materials are formed into cartridges by a compactor using a reciprocating ram which forms cartridges in an injection tube wherein another ram injects the cartridges into the converter drum. The converter is disposed on a fulcrum near the injection end thereof while the discharge end is suspended by cables to accommodate thermal expansion of the converter. Cables also suspend collection and separation apparatus having water filled chutes, into one of which the products of pyrolyzation of low density (char) and solids of higher density are discharged from the converter drum. Lower and higher density solids are separately collected tanks.
