Abstract: The invention is directed to a coaxially arranged, off-axis optical system for a sighting device or aiming device. It is the object of the invention to provide a possibility for constructing an optical system in such a way that the typical disadvantage with respect to the tightness of a sighting device in an open-type construction is overcome and a good flattening of the image field is achieved in addition to the high optical imaging quality of the aiming mark. According to the invention, by means of a coaxially arranged, off-axis optical system for a sighting device or aiming device comprising a lens group, wherein the lens facing the target object is constructed as a converging meniscus and the lens facing the eye is constructed as a diverging meniscus, with a dichroic reflector and an embodiment for the aiming mark, the above-stated object is met in that a correction lens with positive refractive power is arranged at a distance of less than 0.

Abstract: Soldiers and vehicles are fitted with infrared laser detectors for detecting simulated laser bullets and artillery shells from SAT-equipped small arms weapons and tanks employing laser scanner transmitters. An infrared LED is mounted inside the protective housing which supports each laser detector for illuminating the exterior surface of a window, lens or other transparent optical element positioned in front of the detector. Dirt, dust, mud, snow, shoe polish or other contaminant on the exterior surface of the optical element scatters the infrared radiation from the LED and in accordance with a test periodically performed by a test circuit, if the scattered signal exceeds a predetermined threshold value, a visual and/or audible warning is given to the player. If the optical element is not cleaned within a predetermined time after the warning, a kill command is executed to prevent the player from cheating.

Abstract: A self assessing target with four quadrants and a method of use thereof. Each quadrant containing possible causes for why shots are going into that particular quadrant rather than the center mass of the target. Each possible cause is followed by a solution intended to help the marksman correct the problem causing the marksman to shoot in that particular area. In addition, the self assessing target contains possible causes for general shooting errors and solutions to the causes of the general shooting error. The automatic feedback with instant suggestions and corrections enables the shooter to improve their marksmanship.

Abstract: A laser based tactical engagement simulation training system, and in particular a MILES type system, is characterized by an improved communication code structure for the system. The improved code word structure comprises a standard MILES code word that is modified to contain information over and above that required to be embodied in a standard MILES code word. This is accomplished by FM modulating the logic level “1” pulses of the standard MILES code word in a manner that embeds additional information in the word and enhances the system, while at the same time maintaining downward compatibility with existing MILES systems. Apparatus also is provided for encoding, transmitting, receiving, decoding and processing information embodying the improved code structure, which significantly enhances tactical engagement simulation for direct fire force-on-force training, and that yields more accurate simulation to improve tactical training results.

  • Patent number: 6669477
Abstract: A time-difference process and apparatus for scoring supersonic aerial projectiles, such as military aircraft air-to-ground strafing projectiles fired at a strafe target, by detecting and measuring the acoustic shock waves propagated by the projectiles. The process and apparatus uses an array of at least six dynamic transducers to independently sample each projectile shock wave and transmit sampled signals to at least one all-purpose digital computer. The time-differences of arrival of the shock waves at each transducer are processed by an iterative algorithm implemented by the computer. The algorithm calculates projectile impact point, projectile velocity and other useful scoring data. The scoring data are used to quantitatively score the number of hits or misses by the strafing projectiles on the strafe target. Scoring data and other projectile data are selectably indicated to the operator by remote display and printout.

Abstract: A firearm laser training system according to the present invention includes a laser transmitter assembly and a cartridge adapter assembly, while employing modified blank cartridges to simulate firearm operation. The modified blank cartridges each have a quantity of explosive substance sufficient only to cycle the firearm. The laser assembly is configured for attachment to a firearm barrel and front sight and emits a beam of laser light toward a training system target in response to actuation of the firearm trigger. The laser beam is generally in the form of a pulse having a duration sufficient for the system target to detect a beam impact location. The cartridge assembly is disposed within the firearm barrel to adapt the firearm for compatibility with the modified blank cartridges for simulating firearm operation.

  • Patent number: 6575753
Abstract: A firearm laser training system of the present invention includes a laser transmitter assembly, one or more actuable target assemblies each having a target, an interface unit and a computer system. The target assemblies raise and lower targets in accordance with control signals from the computer system. The interface unit is connected to the target assemblies and the computer system and transfers signals therebetween. In an alternative embodiment, the computer system is connected to a control unit that transmits control signals received from the computer system to the target assemblies via a distribution unit. The targets are raised by corresponding target assemblies at prescribed times for a specific time interval to indicate intended targets for the user, and are lowered in response to the beam impacting the raised targets within that interval (e.g., indicating a hit) or upon expiration of the interval without a beam impact (e.g., indicating a miss).
