  • Patent number: 8744388
Abstract: A broadcast radio event such as a song or a concert promotion, and a plurality of radio data fields corresponding to the event such as RTplus information, are received at a device. A user selects to display broadcast radio options simultaneous with receiving the broadcast radio event. Then is displayed a set of user-selectable options, at least one o which is derived from at least one of the radio data fields. In various embodiments, each time a new set of radio data fields are received, the set of displayed options is updated, with certain provisions to ‘freeze’ the displayed set of options. Examples of a derived option include a link to an Internet page, a phone number or email address, and posting a time and place of an advertised event to a calendar. A method, device, computer program product, and apparatus are detailed.

  • Patent number: 8737992
Abstract: In a signal processing method, an input signal is provided at an input to a receiver. A bandwidth of the receiver is controlled to a predetermined wideband setting. For band in a plurality of frequency bands, the input signal is processed at the receiver with a mixer, an amplifier, and a filter, to generate a first processed signal, and a power spectral density of the processed signal is generated over that frequency band, to provide a frequency domain signal for that frequency band. Based on the frequency domain signals corresponding to each frequency band in the plurality of frequency bands, a frequency domain representation of the processed signal is reconstructed over a reconstruction band having a bandwidth larger than the predetermined wideband setting. Based on the reconstructed frequency domain representation, a spectral component is identified corresponding to at least one cellular telephony access mode.

  • Patent number: 8712354
Abstract: FM radio transmitter is being widely used in portable devices as a convenient way to output audio contents to ubiquitously available FM radio receivers in cars or homes. However, the signal from the FM radio transmitter may be interfering with the signal being broadcast by an FM radio station. A scan system is incorporated into the FM radio transmitter to quickly and reliably identify a vacant channel for the FM radio transmitter to use. The scan system measures on-channel and out-of-channel signal quality and selects a best channel for transmission based on the measured on-channel and out-of-channel signal quality. The scan system is also incorporated into an FM radio receiver to quickly and reliably tune to a valid channel. The scan system selects the valid channel based on the measured on-channel and out-of-channel signal quality.

  • Patent number: 8620312
Abstract: A scanning module within a non-AP station receives first scan parameter values for performing a first type of scan to obtain a first type of information, and receives second scan parameter values for performing a second type of scan to obtain a second type of information. From the first and second parameter values the scanning module determines combined scan parameter values that satisfy scan requirements for both types of scans. The combined scan parameter values are used to control a sequence of combined scans. A combined scan yields both the first and second type of information. In one example, an IEEE 802.11(n) non-AP station receives 20/40 coexistence scan parameters. The 20/40 parameters and locally-generated background scan parameters are used to determine parameters for performing combined background and 20/40 scans. Reducing the number of scans using combined scans has advantages including increasing data throughput, freeing processing resources, and reducing power consumption.

Again, by looking for signal energy across multiple different frequencies rather than decoding transmitted packets, at least some of the components in a Bluetooth device can remain in an idle or rest state. A wideband scanning mode looks for signal energies across all relevant frequencies at a time. At least some embodiments enable a Bluetooth device to switch between scanning modes.

Abstract: A method of receiving a plurality of simultaneously transmitted data streams is disclosed. Each data stream is divided into portions and transmitted at predetermined frequencies and times according to a frequency-hopping pattern. The portions are received using a plurality of receivers. Each receiver is configured to receive portions transmitted on one of the predetermined frequencies. The received portions are temporarily stored in a memory such that the received portions are stored as a function of receiver and time. The stored portions are compared to the frequency-hopping pattern. It is determined if any combination of the stored portions corresponds to the predetermined frequencies and times of the frequency-hopping pattern.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method for searching for a radio frequency in a radio receiver are provided. A received broadcast signal is analyzed to determine if it has an abnormal waveform. If the abnormal waveform is detected, a fundamental radio frequency corresponding to the abnormal waveform is detected. The user of the radio receiver may then tune to the detected fundamental radio frequency. The abnormal waveform may have been transmitted by another radio receiver and serve as an indication of the radio frequency to which the other radio receiver is currently tuned. Thus, embodiments of the present invention serve as a way to share radio information among different radio receivers. The abnormal signal may have been derived from the radio frequency signal to which the other radio receiver was tuned. The abnormal waveform may be a clipped version of the original radio signal.

  • Patent number: 8335503
Abstract: In an idle state transition from a macro mobile network to a femtocell, a mobile station looks for the femtocell to operate in a frequency band typically assigned to a macro network. For normal macro network operations, mobile stations look for base stations operating on various channels, e.g. based on hashing of respective mobile station identifiers. Femtocells generate a pilot beacon on a carrier frequency to enable mobile station acquisition, e.g. to redirect a mobile station to the operating frequency of the femtocell. To avoid the need to continually cycle or hop through all possible macro assigned carrier frequencies, pilot beacon transmissions of a particular femtocell are prioritized to correspond to the mobile station(s) expected to utilize that femtocell, e.g. by using existing network information, provisioning device information or self learning/calculating information regarding the carrier most likely to be used by any particular mobile station expected to use the femtocell.

Abstract: A wireless radio frequency transmitter (400), upon detecting (101) an end user assertion of an end user interface and in automatic response thereto, uses a first rolling carrier frequency to transmit (102) a message. Upon then determining (104) that the end user is continuing to assert this end user interface, this transmitter then re-transmits (105) that message using a predetermined fixed carrier frequency. By one approach, the first rolling carrier frequency is selected from amongst a pool of candidate carrier frequencies using a carrier frequency calculation formula. By another approach, this carrier frequency is selected from one or more tables that comprise a plurality of different carrier frequencies.
