Abstract: Exemplary methods and systems are disclosed herein that may, among other benefits, help a mobile station to conserve power by intelligently determining how often to scan for incoming pages. An exemplary method may be carried out by a mobile station that has most-recently registered with a radio access network in a zone of last registration, and involves the mobile station (a) determining a location of the mobile station in relation to the zone of last registration, (b) using the location of the mobile station in relation to the zone of last registration as a basis for determining a scan period to wait between scans of the paging channel; and (c) periodically scanning the paging channel according to the determined scan period. Furthermore, an exemplary method may be carried out in order to conserve battery power when a mobile station determines that its battery power is low.

Abstract: A method of transmitting and receiving a channel quality indicator (CQI) for a sleep-mode mobile station is disclosed. When data to be transmitted to the mobile station is present, the mobile station which is in a sleep mode is directed to transition to a normal mode and simultaneously a temporary CQI channel is allocated thereto. Thus the mobile station which has transitioned to the normal mode from the sleep mode efficiently transmits the CQI, and data applying a proper modulation and coding scheme can be transmitted.

  • Patent number: 8351892
Abstract: Methods and devices for determining intervals between mobile device network searches use measured signal power as lookup criteria to obtain a predefined “sleep” duration from a sleep duration data structure. When a network connection is lost the mobile device may compare received signal power to criteria in a data table to determine an appropriate sleep duration during which the receiver is de-energized to conserve battery power. The sleep durations vs. signal power may be predefined to provide performance as good as other sleep duration determining algorithms while providing flexibility for matching network coverage characteristics. An appropriate sleep duration data table for use may be determined based upon device location or user inputs. At the end of a sleep interval, received signal power may be compared to a threshold to determine whether the receiver should return to sleep mode or attempt a network connection.

  • Patent number: 8023557
Abstract: A method is disclosed for controlling the operation of a low power radio platform that realizes the physical layer (PHY) with a software portion and an analog front end, the analog front end disposed between the DSP and an antenna, and realizes the MAC layer with a microcontroller unit (MCU). The DSP, analog front end and MCU are maintained in a low power mode of operation when not in data communication. When data communication is initiated, a hardware controller controls at least one hardware interface disposed between the DSP and the analog front end to initiate multiple time based tasks to transfer data to and from a buffer. During the execution of these tasks, the controller causes a task in the DSP to be initiated for processing of data in the buffers and, upon completion of at least one of the tasks, notifying the MCU of such. The controller controls the hardware interface to terminate operation when predetermined time based events have occurred.

  • Patent number: 8019316
Abstract: A circuit producing a wake-up signal with a frequency selective RF amplifier that produces an amplified RF output. An RF detector detects the RF output and produces a signal W indicative of the the RF output signal's presence. A threshold detector determines if the amplified output signal has reached a predetermined threshold and produces an output T. A clock signal is generated in response to the threshold detector output signal T. A data decoder logic circuit turns off the clock in the absence of an RF output signal for a time period and decodes the RF detector output W into a stream of output signals. A serial comparator compares a most recent stream of N output data from the data decoder logic with a stored reference to generate a wake-up signal that enables power to an electronic system. This abstract is not to be considered limiting, since other embodiments may deviate from the features described in this abstract.

  • Patent number: 8014833
Abstract: A system and method for automatically managing resource usage of a network device based on device location. In an illustrative embodiment, the system includes a first module that is coupled to a network device. The first module provides position information associated with the network device. A controller communicates with the first module; receives the position information; and generates a control signal in response thereto based on predetermined network information. A second module that is coupled to the network device incorporates instructions to adjust the resource usage of the network device upon receipt of the control signal. In a more specific embodiment, the first module includes a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. The predetermined network information includes network coverage area. The resource usage includes power usage. The second module includes instructions for turning off a receiver, which is coupled to the first module, based on the control signal.

  • Patent number: 8014832
Abstract: A property of a wireless signal over time is monitored while a processor is maintained in a first power state that utilizes less power than a second power state. While the processor remains in the first power state, a measure of the property is compared to a first threshold and to a second threshold. The processor can be transitioned from the first power state to the second power state if the measure crosses the first threshold and the second threshold, and otherwise the processor is maintained in the first power state.

  • Patent number: 7966009
Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for determining the working status of a wireless network communication device. The method includes determining the probe request or broadcast packet or any wireless packet with its destination address equal to this AP address, and then determining whether extending the time interval of signal transmission based on the detection result. Next, when the device does not receive the probe requests or broadcast packet or any wireless packet with its destination address equal to this AP address within the first predetermined interval, the wireless network communication device will switch to the idle mode. Further, the step of the present invention includes determining whether awakening or shutdown the wireless network communication device based on the result of the detection of the probe request or broadcast packet or any wireless packet with its destination address equal to this AP address within the second predetermined interval.

  • Patent number: 7957775
Abstract: A low battery notification service is provided to a user of a wireless device capable of monitoring the voltage level of its internal battery and sending a low battery warning message. The messages are received at a service provider that maintains subscriber profiles associated with a subscriber's wireless device. When a low battery warning message is received, a wireless device identifier in the warning message is used to access a notification list included in a stored subscriber profile. Notification list entries are selected based on their assigned priorities and the existence or absence of conditions of use, permitting low battery notifications to be sent to target systems on the notification list until an acceptable response is received or the notification list is exhausted.

  • Patent number: 7953457
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for use in reducing power consumption in battery-powered mobile communication devices in wireless local area networks (WLANs) are described. In one illustrative example, a mobile device in a WLAN is configured to normally refrain from receiving broadcast messages so that it may remain in a low power mode of operation. A network server is configured to convert broadcast messages into unicast messages for receipt by the mobile device only if the message or protocol type of the broadcast message is one in which the mobile device needs to process. As the mobile device is still configured to receive unicast messages, it will receive and decode such a unicast message and process the broadcast information within it accordingly. Advantageously, battery power is conserved at the mobile device.

Abstract: A method and system to determine when a wireless terminal has been paged by a servicing base station. An encoded paging burst is received on a paging channel and then decoded to produce a decoded paging burst. The decoded paging burst is processed to determine if it is a null page. • Patent number: 7937119
Abstract: In a mobile terminal having an automatic startup mode of a television signal receiving function using a timer, startup is properly controlled in consideration of remaining battery capacity to thereby prevent an occurrence of unexpected lack of battery capacity. In a state where an alarm mode using a television broadcast or an FM broadcast has been set, a control unit makes low voltage determination of a battery at a time point when a time has been up. When an output voltage value of the battery is lower than a threshold, the control unit outputs an alarm sound from a speaker instead of starting up a TV receiver and causes a display to display a low voltage message.
