System With Hierarchical Coverage Areas Patents (Class 455/63.2)
  • Patent number: 7177598
Abstract: Base stations having potentially interfering terminal stations that are geographically located on the same or similar diagonal or Line of Sight (relative to the base station) operate on a first set of time frames (e.g., “even” time frames). Similarly, base stations having potentially interfering terminal stations that are not geographically located on the same or similar diagonals operate on a second set of time frames (e.g., “odd” time frames). By alternating in their use of the even and odd frames, the potential for co-channel interference between terminal stations is minimized. Systems and methods are disclosed which reduce co-channel and adjacent channel interference between terminal stations of different cells as well as adjacent channel interference between terminal stations of adjacent cells. The methods and systems so described can be used during the deployment or expansion of a communication system in a region.

  • Patent number: 7065323
Abstract: In an access control system, a method and system for dynamic channel selection to select a channel for communication between a Wireless Access Point Module (WAPM) and a Wireless Panel Interface Module (WPIM). A number of communication channels are available. The WAPM attempts to communicate over a first channel and selects a second channel if the first channel is unsuccessful. The WPIM scans all the available channels so that communication may be established regardless of the channel chosen by the system. Alternatively, the available channels may be segmented into groups and an individual WAPM may be assigned to a group of channels rather than a single channel.

  • Patent number: 7054635
Abstract: A method and cellular communications network is provided that improves the speech quality near a border of a cell by dynamically changing the size of the cell. More specifically, the method includes the steps of selecting a cell from a plurality of cells, and receiving a plurality of mobile reports from a corresponding number of mobile terminals located in a portion (e.g., cell border area or a section of the cell border area) of the cell. In response to receiving the plurality of mobile reports, an average speech quality value is determined for the portion of the cell. The portion is decreased in size if a lower threshold exceeds the average speech quality value or the portion is increased in size if the average speech quality measure exceeds an upper threshold.

  • Patent number: 7047014
Abstract: Methods, apparatuses and systems directed to optimizing vector models for use in modeling RF propagation in desired physical environments. In one embodiment, the present invention can operate on pre-existing vector models. In other implementations, the present invention facilitates the conversion of raster images of buildings and other physical locations to vector formats for use in connection with the computational modeling of radio-frequency (RF) propagation. According to certain embodiments, the present invention is implemented within the context of a location diagram editing application that supports a line recognition filter, a snap filter and a merge filter which a user may individually select and configure. As discussed more fully below, the line recognition filter operates on the vector objects to adjust near-vertical lines (as defined by a configurable threshold angle) to vertical, and near-horizontal lines to horizontal.

  • Patent number: 7043254
Abstract: Automated adjustment of system organization parameters in a wireless communication system is provided by determining the parameter settings using a characterization of signal propagation of the system's coverage area. This characterization is based on measurements of path loss-related characteristics by the system's base stations and wireless terminals. An exemplary path loss-related characteristic is path loss as determined by measuring received signal strength (RSS) at wireless terminals based on signals transmitted at known powers by a plurality of the system's base stations. It is possible for the wireless terminals to take measurement while operating in the coverage area, whether idle or during communication with the system, and for such terminals to be associated with the system's subscribers. A resulting characterization of signal propagation in the coverage area based on the measured path loss-related characteristic can then be used to determine a variety of parameter settings.

  • Patent number: 7035643
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for planning radio coverage and for predicting the high-frequency received power level of a mobile radio transmitter in buildings for a number of floors above and below the floor in which the transmitter is positioned with a transmitting antenna. The method can be used for the most frequently existing building types, i.e. reinforced concrete framework buildings and masonry buildings. The invention is advantageous in that a complex series of measurements for planning the radio coverage in buildings can be forgone. In addition, no complex calculations using semi-emperical models, e.g. ray tracing methods, are necessary. The inventive method offers rapid adequately precise results concerning the radio coverage to be expected in a building and, at the same time, for a large number of floors.

  • Patent number: 6970724
Abstract: The present invention pertains to an apparatus and method for automatically disabling cell phone ringing and/or cell phone beeping. An RF transmitter is used to transmit an RF non-audible mode or control signal. Upon receiving the non-audible mode or control signal, the cell phone and/or beeper automatically disables its audible alarm. Users are notified of incoming calls and/or pages by means of blinking lights or vibration. When the user no longer receives the non-audible mode or control signal or upon the elapse of a fixed, pre-determined amount of time, the cell phone and/or beeper automatically reverts back to its normal mode of operation whereby incoming calls and pages are indicated by cell phone ringing and pager beeping.

  • Patent number: 6909879
Abstract: To address the scarcity of radio frequency (RF) spectrum, the disclosed systems offer unique ways to mitigate interference between television broadcasters (including their direct audience and viewers served via cable television) and other concurrent users of the RF spectrum, e.g. for one-way or two-way wireless communication. A preferred embodiment makes use of the “framing” characteristics of the “letterbox” video display format. RF emissions of the simultaneous RF spectrum user are keyed “on” only or substantially only during the time intervals when the blanking intervals and/or letterbox-border video lines are being scanned on the display, i.e. when the potentially affected (interfered with) television display is in the letterbox-frame-scanning portions of each video field. The concurrent uses may support services for voice (including telephony, music etc.), data (including Internet, intranet, etc.

  • Patent number: 6901243
Abstract: Techniques for detecting and mitigating adjacent channel interference (ACI) in a wireless (e.g., CDMA) communication system. In one aspect, ACI may be determined by signaling or detected by filtering a pre-processed signal in each frequency range where ACI may be present (e.g., with a respective bandpass filter), estimating the energy of the filtered signal for each frequency range, comparing the estimated energy against an ACI threshold, and indicating the presence or absence of ACI at each frequency range based on the result of the comparison. In another aspect, a selectable filter (e.g., a FIR filter) having a number of possible filter responses (e.g., provided by a number of sets of filter coefficients) may be used to provide filtering for the pre-processed signal and to reject any detected ACI. One of the possible filter responses is selected for use depending on whether and where ACI has been detected.

Abstract: A node in a wireless network includes at least first and second directional antennas, which are directed toward other nodes in the network. Signal generation circuitry at the node receives first and second streams of digital information to be conveyed to the other nodes, and combines the streams so as to generate outgoing signals for transmission by the first and second directional antennas, while suppressing interference between the transmitted signals. Additionally or alternatively, processing circuitry at the node receives first and second receiver inputs from the antennas, due to reception of incoming signals by the antennas from the other nodes, and combines the inputs so as to extract data streams therefrom while suppressing interference between the received signals.
