The SIR estimation is performed for a radio signal (u) which is transmitted from a transmitter (35) to a receiver (43) over a radio channel (37). The estimated SIR value is generated such that it equals a first estimated SIR value multiplied by a numerical factor. The numerical factor is dependent on the channel estimate h and the combining weight w in a manner such that it attains a minimum value whenever the channel estimate h and the combining weight w are linearly dependent. Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing channel feedback is provided herein. During operation a covariance matrix at time t (R) is calculated as a function of a received downlink signal. Matrix Ct is also calculated and is based on a previous quantized covariance matrix (Rqt?1), the covariance matrix (R) at time t, and a forgetting factor (?) that is applied to Rqt?1. The Ct is then used to create a DERC feedback message (signal or waveform) and may be transmitted with pilots on a proper feedback channel to a base unit. The base unit receives the feedback (Ct) as a DERC waveform on a proper feedback channel. The base unit uses non-coherent or coherent detection to detect the DERC values send by the remote unit and uses the DERC values with a previous quantized covariance matrix estimate, a forgetting factor, and a weighting value to compute a covariance matrix estimate to use for beamforming.

  • Patent number: 8849334
Abstract: A power control procedure is based on assigning a common control parameter to considered interfering communication resources, and using the control parameter together with a unique power control condition for determining the individual transmit power parameters of the communication resources. In particular, for each one of at least a subset of said communication resources, an individual transmit power parameter is determined based on a power control condition implying that the total received power divided with a path gain of the communication resource should correspond to the common control parameter. The determined transmit power parameters are then used for controlling the transmit powers of the corresponding communication resources. This process helps to maximize aggregate data rate for any given amount of total invested power.
