Patent number: 5186573Abstract: A first shaft which is, for example, the output shaft of a clutch, is coupled to a second shaft which, for example, is the input shaft of a transmission, by a splined coupling. The splined coupling includes a first sleeve having internal splines for splining with the first shaft and external splines for splining with the internal splines of a second sleeve which internal splines also spline with the external splines of the second shaft. A first spring extending between the first sleeve and first shaft biases the first sleeve toward the second shaft, while a second spring extending between the first sleeve and second sleeve biases the second sleeve toward the second shaft. In order to decouple the first shaft from the second shaft so that, for example, a clutch may be removed from a drive train without removing a transmission, the first and second sleeves are pushed to a retracted position, collapsing the first and second springs.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1991Date of Patent: February 16, 1993Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: Richard A. Patent number: 5098343Abstract: Difficulty in disconnecting two coupled shafts (38, 40) is avoided through the use of a retractable shaft coupler which includes a sleeve (22) which can engage respective shafts (38, 40) at each of its ends and having at least one spring (28) coaxially positioned inside of the sleeve (22). The spring (28) is sandwiched and contained inside of the sleeve (22) by washers (24, 26) which are retained by splines (32, 34). The construct allows retraction from one of the shafts (40) by moving the tubular member (22) in the axial direction away from the shaft (40) against the bias of the spring 28.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1989Date of Patent: March 24, 1992Assignee: Sundstrand CorporationInventors: John D. Patent number: 4913681Abstract: A gear coupling adapted to be capable of absorbing torsional shock loads between a power driven shaft 1 and a power drive shaft 2 comprises a drive member 3 and driven member 4 which extend from two sides into, and engage with, hollow intermediate member 5 so that the three members rotate in unison. The driven member 3 and preferably also the drive member 4 engage the intermediate member 5 by helical gear teeth 3B, 5A, 4B, 5B and a resilient member 6 such as a bank of disc springs is present between the drive member and the intermediate member. The coupling is arranged do that under the influence of a torsional shock load, the resultant axial separating force urges the intermediate member against the bias of the springs, to thereby reduce any damaging effects of the shock load.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 1988Date of Patent: April 3, 1990Inventor: Paul C. Patent number: 4854808Abstract: An industrial robot comprising a column housing a first group of coaxial hollow shafts rotatably coupled to a first articulated joint positioned at about 60.degree. to the first group of hollow shafts. A second group of coaxial hollow shafts receives the rotating movement from the first articulated joint and transmits it to a second articulated joint, also arranged in slanted relationship at 60.degree.. A third group of coaxial hollow shafts receives the rotating movement from the second articulated joint and transmits it to a third articulated joint which in turn is connected to an end bush supporting implements or operative tools. The invention is of particular advantage thanks to its high mobility and to the particular orientation in the space allowed to the several articulated joints.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1988Date of Patent: August 8, 1989Inventor: Bruno Bisiach

Patent number: 4781359Abstract: A sub assembly for connecting a power swivel to a drill string. The assembly includes a telescopic sub having a preloaded spring. The telescopic sub has three discrete positions enabling it to travel in either direction from a normal position. This capability prevents thread damage for both when connecting and disconnecting a drill pipe to the drill string.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1987Date of Patent: November 1, 1988Assignee: National-OilwellInventor: Wayne L. Patent number: 4692127Abstract: An intermediate shaft is provided which achieves a sliding connection between an outer part (17) and an inner part (18) inserted into the outer part. Two Cardan joints are formed of axial bores (22, 31). The joint heads (48, 49) are inserted into the axial bores (22, 31) and include grooves (53, 52) which are open on one side. Dog driver bolts (44, 45) engage the open grooves. A helical spring (19) tensions the intermediate shaft (15) between the joints.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1985Date of Patent: September 8, 1987Assignee: Hasler AG BernInventor: Alois Wagner
