  • Patent number: 8226337
Abstract: It is an object of the invention to provide a tap holder in which even when an error is brought about in synchronizing spindle feeding and rotation of a tapper body and a tap collet of a tap holder in correspondence with a machine tool spindle, the synchronization can be established by absorbing the error by a simple constitution. As means therefor, the tap holder is characterized in that a tapper body and a tap collet are inserted by a locking member at portions of the tapper body and the tap collet overlapping each other, and the tap collet is fixed to the tapper body by engaging the locking member with at least one of the tap collet and the tapper body in a state of being interposed with an elastic member on both sides thereof in an axial direction X.

  • Patent number: 7708506
Abstract: Disclosed is a tap driver for rigid tapping, which includes predetermined tension and compression factors to self-synchronize the tap driver. In the preferred embodiment, the tap driver includes helical coils imparted in the tap driver body which allow the attachment body to synchronize axially in response to a force of a predetermined magnitude imparted on the tap. An additional embodiment of this invention provides such a tap driver body wherein the body allows for lateral flexure and movement to compensate for feed error and location error.

  • Patent number: 6634651
Abstract: A tool holder for tapping spindles includes a coaxial body (5) composed of an upper hollow half-pin (6) and a lower hollow half-pin (9) which engage mutually and coaxially through a conic semielastic coupling (190) associated with a sequential threaded coupling (11). One (6) of the hollow half-pins includes a continuous conical part (19) capable of sliding in the axial direction, under the action produced by the threaded coupling (11) of the discontinuous conic part (17) of the other hollow half-pin (9). The discontinuous conic part deforms elastically, squeezing on a stem (13) of the tool to be tapped, tying the same.

  • Patent number: 5876158
Abstract: A drive collet assembly for an internal thread producing tap. The collet includes a collar that is attached to the stem of the tap using set screws. The collar is received into a recess of the body portion of a drive collet and retained therein using a spring clip. A smaller diameter aperture extends into the body portion above the recess, the aperture receiving a portion of the stem of the tap, the portion has a pair of opposed flats thereon. At least two laterally extending threaded apertures intersect the smaller diameter aperture and each receive a rigid button, a flexible element and a set screw. The set screw can be adjusted to provide a desired breakaway torque which will protect the tap from breakage should an over-torque condition occur. The flexible element will allow the rigid buttons to be forced outwardly so that the drive collet assembly spins freely about the jammed tap, rather than twisting it off.

  • Patent number: 5636851
Abstract: A tapping collet is actuated by engagement with a mating surface of a collet holder for holding a tap having a round shank portion and a square shank portion. The collet has a plurality of independent gripping jaws circumferentially disposed at essentially 90 degree intervals about a centerline axis through the collet. The gripping jaws have an inner face parallel to the centerline axis and an outer face which defines an outer surface for engaging a collet holder mating surface. Resilient material is disposed between the gripping jaws for holding the jaws in the desired spaced relation. The gripping jaws comprise a step portion which extends radially inward and defines a second inner diameter opening to engage the flat sides of the square shank portion of a tap inserted into the collet. The continuous outer diameter seal is disposed circumferentially about the outer surface of the collet and a continuous inner diameter seal is disposed circumferentially within a first inner diameter opening of the collet.

  • Patent number: 5346337
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting threads in holes of fabricated parts including a vertical support shaft supporting at least one arm extended out over the part with a tap coupled to a motor on the end of each of the at least one arm. The arm is supported on the vertical shaft by a joint support which can be rotated around the vertical shaft and slide vertically on the shaft. A spring on the shaft is biased to return the joint support to a rest position. The vertical shaft can also be positioned vertically by virtue of a manually operated friction drive located in the base. These several degrees of freedom enable a user to position a tap in any one of a multiplicity of holes located over a large area of the part. A means and method for securing the tap in the tap chuck is provided.

  • Patent number: 5310292
Abstract: A rotary tool connecting assembly is provided for use as a tap driver for transmitting torque to a tap. The assembly comprises an adapter receiver for receiving and securing a tap, a chuck body having one end which is detachably connectable to the spindle, and an opposing end having an axially aligned recess for slidably receiving the adapter receiver, and a mechanism for transmitting torque from the chuck body to the adapter receiver while allowing the receiver to freely axially slide within the recess of the chuck body that includes a plurality of linear roller bearings disposed between a single flat wall present on the side of the receiver and a flat bearing wall that defines a portion of the recess in the chuck body. The flat bearing wall of the chuck body is provided by a bearing insert which is compliantly seated within a slot in the chuck in order to keep its bearing wall parallel with the flat bearing wall of the adapter receiver when substantial amounts of torque are applied to the assembly.
