Abstract: A DOHC engine of the V-type has two cylinder heads each detachably secured to a cylinder block. A crank shaft on the block drives two intermediate shafts, one on each cylinder head, by means of an endless flexible element. An additional flexible endless element is provided in each cylinder head to drive two cam shafts from the intermediate shaft on that cylinder head. Each endless flexible element together with its toothed pulleys or sprockets and its timing belt or chain is described as a wrap-around transmission.
Abstract: An automotive V-belt used for power transmission to drive accessory units to an automotive internal combustion engine. Surface smoothing agent such as wax is dispersed in the inner material of the belt for reducing attachment of dust to the belt surface.
Abstract: A flat belting includes a plurality of individual layers of fabric that extend throughout the length and width of the belting. The layers are joined together by reinforcing elements which extend substantially in the direction of the thickness of the belting. The individual layers and reinforcing elements are encapsulated in a matrix of polymeric elastomeric resin, for example, polyvinylchloride. The individual layers are saturated with a liquid elastomer-forming polymeric resin prior to their being joined together. The reinforcing elements may be inserted, for example, by tufting, sewing, or stitch-bonding. One or more of the individual fabric layers may be a woven or other cloth having a plurality of substantially parallel yarns which extend in the lengthwise direction of the belting. One or more of the individual fabric layers may be a non-woven fabric.
Abstract: An automatic tension maintaining power transmission belt, a method of making the same and a method for maintaining tension in a rubber belt transmission. The belt is made by embedding polyester fiber cord employing a polyester of high relative viscosity and after being subjected to a hot stretching process as a tensile member in rubber forming the belt. The thermal contraction force of the polyester cord is to be substantially maintained by avoiding shrinkage of the belt during vulcanization. The belt of the present invention is characterized by exhibiting shrinkage of said polyester fiber cords through thermal contractive forces caused by frictional heat generated by slippage of the belt upon lowering of belt tension during belt running. The minimum tension necessary for transmission of power is recovered, the slippage is eliminated for a while and proper tension is maintained. Such automatic action repeats when it becomes needed again.
Abstract: A power transmission belt manufacture wherein a modified rubber blend is utilized as at least one portion of the belt, with the blend including a silane coupling agent, silica and carbon black. The blend is advantageously adapted for use as the cushion rubber embedding the load-carrying cords of the belt. The invention comprehends the use of the blend further as at least one of the compression and tension sections of the belt, as desired. The modified rubber blend is advantageously utilized in power transmission belts having widely varying configurations and characteristics.
Abstract: A power transmission belt which is substantially V-shaped in cross-section has insert members which are resistant to transverse compression embedded in an elastomeric or plastomeric body. Protective layers of elastomer or plastomer having oriented fibers dispersed therein cover the flanks of the belt and, if necessary, are disposed in addition to the belt body adjacent to a base of the belt.
Abstract: A strip of material adapted for use in a power transmission belt construction, method of making such strip, and belt construction and method of making same employing the strip are provided wherein such strip comprises an uncured polymeric matrix material having opposed surfaces and a plurality of elongate reinforcing fibers disposed substantially uniformly throughout the matrix material in a random manner and in parallel relation and a plurality of parallel spaced apart bleeder yarns are adhered against at least one of the surfaces with the strip being adapted to be laminated against associated layer means comprising the belt construction on at least one common interface with the bleeder yarns along the interface and the bleeder yarns are adapted to serve as fluid passages for any fluid present at the interface during curing of the strip and its associated layer means.
Abstract: A heavy duty, raw edge, laminated cogged belt is provided, together with a method for making such a belt. The belt has an inner compression section, an outer tension section and a load-carrying section therebetween. The compression section comprises a first layer of elastomeric material adjacent the load-carrying section, a plurality of layers of relatively thick fabric adjacent the first elastomeric material layer, a second layer of elastomeric material adjacent the thick fabric layers, and a plurality of layers of thinner fabric adjacent the second elastomeric material layer.
