Each step-down gear mechanism is connected to the respective wheel by a cardan shaft. The respective rotation axes (5, 5) of the two electrical machines are arranged parallel and next to one another. The chassis enables each wheel to be mounted in a non-rigid manner and permits the overall length of the electrical machines to be varied on account of the arrangement of the rotation axes of the electrical machines.

Hence, the lubricating oil which is scattered from the meshing portions of the sun gear and the planetary gears can be efficiently guided to the planetary gear bearings through the doughnut-shaped guide member.

    Abstract: A Segmented Ground Gear Transmission (SGGT) is a two-stage epicyclical planetary transmission that converts input angular velocity and toque to a continuously variable output varying the effective diameter of ground stage ring gear. The ground stage ring gear is expanded and contracted in segments, half occupied by planets and half free. The segments occupied by planets transfer torque to ground, but do not move except in small angle twist for section curvature correction, while the free segments move in rotation to close the gaps between segments, but do not carry load. The ground stages of the two-stage planets displace to maintain correct mesh with and to correct curvature errors in the sections. The load-bearing segments and free segments exchange roles so the planets can rotate and orbit continuously for extended periods. Anti-friction rolling contacts are used throughout.

    Abstract: A parallel eccentric electro-mechanical actuator provides motive power and includes an electric prime mover that drives the reducer's pinion gear. This pinion drives minimum three star gears with stationary shaft bearings. Each shaft contains an eccentric which are completely in parallel with each other. These eccentrics can be thought of as parallel/in-phase driven crankshafts. Each eccentric drives the parallel eccentric (PE) gear through a bearing. The PE gear exhibits a circular motion (without rotation) which in itself is unbalanced. The crankshafts have another eccentric which create an opposite inertia force to balance that of the PE gear. The PE gear contains an external toothed gear on its periphery. It meshes with the internal teeth of the output ring gear. The relative motion between the PE gear and the ring gear is that the PE gear rolls inside the ring gear. This relative motion is called hypo-cycloidal motion.
