A sub planetary gear train is included to have a sub sun gear, a sub ring gear, and sub planet gears, and has a different gear ratio from the main planetary gear train. The sub sun gear is connected to rotate together with the main sun gear. A common carrier supporting the main and sub planet gears is rotatable about a common center axis and is drivingly connected to rotate an output shaft. A lock mechanism releasably fixes the main ring gear in order to allow the main planet gears to rotate about the center axis as the main sun gear rotates with the main ring gear fixed. A one-way clutch is connected to permit the sub ring gear to rotate in a first direction and to prohibit the sub ring gear from rotating in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

Abstract: A two-speed press drive is manufactured as a complete assembly eliminating the requirement that the drive be assembled at the location of the press. The two-speed drive includes a stationary quill, an output shaft and a planetary gear set. The planetary gear set includes a first sun gear connected to the stationary quill, a second sun gear rotatably connected to the stationary quill, a planetary gear carrier rotatably connected to the stationary quill and three compound planetary gears rotatably connected to the carrier and meshing with both the first and second sun gears. The input to the two-speed drive is through the planetary gear carrier. A high speed clutch connects the carrier directly to the output shaft for high speed operation. A low speed clutch connects the second sun gear to the output shaft for high speed operation. A housing in conjunction with the carrier define a sealed cavity within which the components of the drive operate.

  • Patent number: 5692989
Abstract: This invention relates to high reduction planetary transmissions that do not use internal ring gears and particularly planet gears that are the support for the planet carrier and in some cases the planet carrier may be used as a support bearing for the input shaft relative to the stationary and output gears with which they mesh. The floating is accomplished by providing means to let the carrier move radially in response to unbalanced forces from the planet gears. The floating of the planet gears improves the alignment between the intermeshing gears and the balancing of the load between the planet gears. A speed reducing device placed between the input shaft of the transmission and the drive means is used to decrease the speed of the input shaft to decrease the centrifugal force on the planetary pinions as they rotate around the sun and output gears.

  • Patent number: 5509865
Abstract: A planet carrier for a compound planetary gear arrangement has four side plates supporting six pinion gears. One pair of side plates, supporting three of the pinion gears, have one of the other pair of side plates disposed axially between them. This allows the pinions to be in meshing relation between adjacent side plates which are each supporting three pinions, respectively. To complete the planetary arrangement, the outer side plates are sized to permit central access at respective sun gears and outer axial access at respective ring gears. The ring gears and sun gears do not encroach upon the meshing location of the pinion gears. With the judicious use of friction clutches and brakes and two input gear sets providing ratios, the compound planetary arrangement can be controlled to provide powertrains having from five forward speeds (the four friction devices) to seven forward speeds and two reverse speeds (with eight friction devices).
