Patent number: 7914419Abstract: A system that facilitates activity management and tracking with respect to an individual is disclosed. The innovation employs the notion of establishing a strategy to compress activity information into an identifying indicia (e.g., two-dimensional barcode) that can be processed (e.g., scanned) by a wide array of devices (e.g., mobile phone, personal data assistant). The innovation discloses a system that facilitates the ability to plan, monitor and log activity of an individual. The planning phase enables a user or third party (e.g., health-care professional) to proactively define an exercise or activity regimen for a user. The monitoring phase enables real-time fitness and/or activity tracking of an individual. Finally, the logging phase enables a user to log the information into a fitness log that can be subsequently used in health or fitness-related assessment.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2007Date of Patent: March 29, 2011Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Chris Demetrios Karkanias, Stephen Edward Hodges

Patent number: 7909736Abstract: An exercise apparatus is described herein. The exercise apparatus can have a body forming a first yoke. The first yoke includes a first longitudinal channel extending therethrough and a first slide member is positioned in the first channel. The first slide member is slidable therein in a reciprocating manner and has an abdominal engagement end extending from the channel. The exercise apparatus can further include a second yoke pivotally attached to the body and has a second longitudinal channel extending therethrough. A second slide member is positioned in the second channel and is slidable therein in a reciprocating manner. The second slide member has an upper body engagement end extending from the second channel. The exercise apparatus can include a vibration unit operable to cause all or portions of the exercise apparatus to vibrate.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 2008Date of Patent: March 22, 2011Assignee: Core 36 LLCInventors: M. Publication number: 20110059825Abstract: A method of monitoring the use of exercise equipment at an exercise facility having a plurality of items of exercise equipment, the method comprising the steps of: providing a plurality of usage monitors, each associated with an item of exercise equipment, monitoring the usage of the said plurality of items of exercise equipment concurrently using the said usage monitors, and thereby calculating, for at least some of the items of exercise equipment, a measure of the proportion of the period of time during which respective items of exercise equipment are used. In some embodiments, the usage monitors can detect when an item of exercise equipment is occupied, even if it is not being operated, for example using a heat sensor. A graphical representation may be prepared of the usage of items of exercise equipment at each of a plurality of locations within the exercise facility.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 27, 2010Publication date: March 10, 2011Inventor: Rhoderick Euan MCGOWN

Publication number: 20110057874Abstract: An intra-oral system is disclosed for assisting an individual in developing intra-oral muscle control and strength, and for facilitating typing of alphanumeric characters on a virtual keyboard. The system may also be used to enable an individual having limited use of the upper extremities to control an electrical apparatus such as a wheelchair, a bed or a light fixture. The intra-oral system includes a mouthpiece having a plurality of cells embedded therein. The cells are configured to receive pressure applied by the tongue of an individual. Movement of the tongue over and against the cells causes an object to be moved over a display. In one embodiment, the object is moved through an obstacle course or over a simulated track as part of a therapeutic regimen. In another embodiment, the object is moved over alphanumeric characters on a digital keyboard, and selected characters are typed by operation of the mouthpiece.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 18, 2010Publication date: March 10, 2011Inventor: Youhanna Al-Tawil
