  • Patent number: 6557958
Abstract: An assembly includes panels forming a bin or cabinet, and a flipper door operably attached to the bin by a pair of opposing modules. Each module includes a body forming a groove forming a curvilinear track along its upper edge, and the door includes a follower operably engaging the track. Each module further includes a spring-biased lever pivoted to the body of the module at a mid-lever pivot. A first leg of the lever is pivoted to the door at a door pivot, and an oppositely extending second leg is connected to a spring-biased force-generating device. The arrangement is constructed to counterbalance a weight of the door in most intermediate positions.

  • Patent number: 5711113
Abstract: A suspension mechanism for pivotally moving a door panel to close or open a doorway includes a first brace with one end attached to a point low on the panel and the opposite end to a stationary pivot and a second brace with one end attached to the first brace intermediate of its ends and the opposite end slidably and rotatably connected near the top of the panel for support thereof. A stationary but rotatable axial guide receives the second brace intermediate of its ends, and a torque generating spring assists with lifting and opening the panel with energy stored from the lowering of the panel. The spring may be a compression spring encircling the second brace with one end attached near the upper end of the second brace and the opposite end attached to the stationary axial guide, thus locating the spring near the top of the doorway.

  • Patent number: 5409308
Abstract: A cabinet is provided with a curved, upwardly-swinging door and interior shelves. The curved shelf door is mounted on a pair of opposed pivot arms which rotate on a horizontal axis. Each pivot arm is provided with a disk portion having a central boss and an arm portion tangent to the disk portion. The central boss engages a fixed stud at the side of the cabinet and provides a center pivot for each of the arms. A gas spring for each arm is provided, which is pivotably connected at one end to the arm and at the other end to a side wall of the cabinet. The gas spring serves a dual purpose of counterbalancing the door as it moves between an open and a closed position and opening the door unassisted once the user initiates movement of the door, this opening feature being very beneficial to seated and physically disabled users.

  • Patent number: 4601131
Abstract: A spring assembly for use in place of the spiral tension springs in conventional spring-loaded counterbalancing systems for garage doors. It is made up of a compression spring and traveling pulley in a tubular housing, the compression spring being mounted above the pulley. A cable extends around the pulley from an anchored end to interconnection with the kicker assembly of the mounting hardware for tension springs in an ordinary garage door counterbalancing system so that closing of the door causes the cable to pull up on the pulley and compress the spring. There is virtually no possibility that the compressed spring will rupture and emit flying fragments, but even if this occurred the housing would prevent the escape of such fragments to the surroundings.

  • Patent number: 4488379
Abstract: A spring balanced door for closing a passage through a door frame comprises a closure panel having opposite lateral edges and movable from a closed position to an open position, fixed supports connected to the door frame at opposite sides of the passage, a vertical guide track connected on opposite sides of the door frame and rollers rotatably mounted to the panel at each lateral edge thereof and adjacent a lower corner of each lateral edge, movable in each track respectively. Rigid arms are connected to the panel at intermediate locations of each lateral edge and extend perpendicularly to a plane of the panel from an interior surface of the panel. A lever arm is journaled between each rigid arm and each support, with each lever arm pivotally connected to each rigid arm at a joint. A spring is connected between at least one of the supports and a corresponding lever arm with a stop provided on the support against which the lever arm stops during movement of the panel from its closed to its opened position.

The hinge mechanism comprises, a dual-cam guided four-bar linkage mechanism which produces a compound motion to the door for retraction through a relatively narrow horizontal opening into an area above the baggage compartment. Ordinarily, a four-bar linkage mechanism would have its operation designed around two fixed pivot points; however, in this disclosure there is only one fixed pivot point and the other of said pivots is a walking pivot which is guided by a dual-cam device for profiling the travel of the door.

  • Patent number: 4235047
Abstract: The armored door of a field artillery ammunition support vehicle has a door opener on each side of the door, the door being hinged at the top to the top of the vehicle for movement into raised substantially horizontal position to supply added protection for crew members. Each door opener includes a cylinder pivoted at its bottom to the floor of the vehicle with a rod actuated compression spring in the cylinder. The upper end of the rod is pivoted to the end of an arm and the arm is in turn pivoted to an extension from the door opening into the vehicle body. The other end of the arm is pivoted to a link which in turn is pivoted at its other end to the interior of the door. On opening of the door the spring which is compressed assists in raising the weight of the door and on closing of the door the spring compresses countering the downward action of the weight of the door. In door close position the four pivots are aligned on the axis of the cylinder and rod to assist in holding the door in closed position.
