Patent number: 7069700Abstract: A system for covering fasteners that are provided at an exterior building wall for mounting storm panels. The system includes cover plates that are located adjacent to the fasteners. The cover plates are mounted so as to be pivotable about one side of a mounting track. This permits the cover plates to pivot between a closed (use) position for covering the track and fasteners, and an open (non-use) position for permitting installation of storm panels. The cover plates can be painted in a variety of colors to match the building wall or the shutters, which permits the covers to blend into the exterior finish of the building. Thus, when the storm panels are removed, the present system conveniently covers the unattractive and conspicuous fasteners in an attractive manner.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 2002Date of Patent: July 4, 2006Inventor: Michael Heissenberg

Publication number: 20020023388Abstract: A light transmitting storm shutter system for homes, buildings and the like includes a combination of full width corrugated aluminum and half width clear polycarbonate panels arranged in alternating adjacent and partially overlapping relation over a given window or door opening. The aluminum panels provide structural integrity while the polycarbonate panels provide light transmittance. The combination of full width aluminum panels and half width polycarbonate panels provides a storm shutter system that is substantially stronger and more resistant to impact deflection than the light transmitting storm shutters disclosed in the background art, and eliminates the need for additional hardware, supports, and bracing.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 20, 2001Publication date: February 28, 2002Inventor: Michael Madden

Patent number: 6347483Abstract: A child safety barrier for positioning across an opening includes a frame and a gate which is hinged to the frame and can be swung from a closed position where the gate lies in the plane of the frame to an open position out of the plane, a corner of the barrier including a closing mechanism for engagement with a side of the opening, an upper rod of the gate being connected to a pillar of the frame by a hinge assembly which includes a first hinge part connected to the pillar, a second hinge part connected to the end of upper rod and a pivot pin extending therebetween. The end surface of the second hinge part has an upper flat portion and a lower curved portion, the upper flat portion abutting the pillar when the gate is closed and the lower curved portion allowing opening of the gate when lifted and swung around the pivot pin.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2000Date of Patent: February 19, 2002Inventor: Finn Andersen

Publication number: 20020002795Abstract: A safety gate (10) comprises a frame (12) and a gate part (14) pivotally mounted on the frame (12). The frame (12) is adapted to be mounted across a space, for example in a doorway. The frame (12) defines an opening closed off by the gate part (14). The gate part comprises a latch (24) engageable with a keep (44) on the frame (12). The gate (10) also comprises an engaging member (64) on the gate part (14) for engaging the frame (12). The gate (10) thus requires two actions to open—unlatching of the latch (24) from the keep (44) and disengagement of the engaging member (64) by movement of the gate part (14) preferably in a non-opening direction of the gate (10), i.e., upwardly.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 12, 2001Publication date: January 10, 2002Inventor: John Rogers

Patent number: 6334282Abstract: A device is provided for protecting a window or door during severe storms. A panel, cut to fit in a window frame, is held in place by the action of the locking assemblies described herein. A rubber gasket can be used along on e side of the panel in place of some of the locking assemblies. Different embodiments of the assembly are described for mounting along the sides of the panel. A “clip-on” assembly is also described.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2001Date of Patent: January 1, 2002Inventor: Herman C. Wood

Patent number: 6330768Abstract: A window is protected from storms by applying a rigid protective panel, such as a plywood sheet cut to size, to the window frame. The panel is held securely in place by one or more innovative elongate braces or bars that extend from one wall of the window opening to an opposed wall. The brace has a long body provided with a planar friction pad at each end. Each pad is angularly adjustable relative to the long axis of the body to conform to the angle of the wall for maximum contact. One of the friction pads is connected to the body by a spring-loaded connection that allows for a short reciprocating motion with the spring urging the pad away from the body. This enables the user to temporarily hold the panel in place with one hand, while pushing the brace in place with both pads engaging opposed walls in a panel holding position with the other hand. The brace is then more tightly and securely extended by advancing a threaded nut that forces the pad farther away from the body.Type: GrantFiled: August 21, 2000Date of Patent: December 18, 2001Inventor: Donald J. Patent number: 6308462Abstract: A child safety barrier for positioning across an opening includes a frame and a gate which is hinged to the frame and can be swung from a closed position where the gate lies in the plane of the frame to an open position out of the plane, the gate including an upper rod having a closing mechanism for locking the gate in a closed position or unlocking the gate to allow it to be opened. The closing mechanism includes a pivotable handle and a spring-loaded locking button which cooperates with the handle to retain it in a position wherein it locks the gate in a closed position.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2000Date of Patent: October 30, 2001Inventor: Finn Andersen

Patent number: 6305124Abstract: A removable window guard for preventing small children and animals from exiting a window. The window guard includes a barrier having a plurality of vertical members intersecting a plurality of horizontal members. On each side of the barrier is a plurality of axial extensions. Each axial extension has a knob. A plurality of brackets are affixed to the side of a window frame. Each bracket retains a knob within the bracket'interior, thereby securing the barrier to the window frame. The barrier may be easily removed from the bracket by an adult located on either side of the window.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2000Date of Patent: October 23, 2001Inventor: Tammy L. Pennington

Patent number: RE37981Abstract: A embeddable mounting device and method for permanently affixing a fixture to a concrete block wall. The embeddable mounting device comprises a first rectangular metal plate member; a second rectangular metal plate member having dimensions equal to the first metal plate; and a pair of vertical spacer members secured between the first inner surface and the second inner surface in a manner to create at least one reinforcing bar and cement receiving cavity between the first and second metal plate members, and in a manner to hold the first and second metal plate members in parallel relationship with each other such that when said first and second metal plate members simultaneously contact a planar surface the first and second metal plate members are both perpendicularly oriented to the planar surface. A method of installing a fixture utilizing the mounting device is also described.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1999Date of Patent: February 11, 2003Assignee: Steel Block, Inc.Inventor: Harry R. Layne
