The novel method includes moving a web of paper at a constant rate of speed, rotary perforating a plurality of lines on the moving web, using rotary timing belts to score at least two fold lines on the moving web, where the two fold lines define two glue flaps, rotary die-cutting the moving web to cut away portions of the paper adjacent the glue flaps, plow folding the moving web along the two fold lines defining the glue flaps, and applying glue to the moving web. After plow folding along the fold lines and applying the glue, the moving web is cross cut to form a blank having the glue flaps. Then, the blank is vacuum folded to cause portions of the blank to contact and adhere to the glue flaps, thereby forming the food server from the blank. The novel food server includes a first panel having two side flaps each defined by a score line, and a second panel having two side flaps each defined by a score line.

Abstract: A glue gun type gluing apparatus has glue guns 8a and 8b for applying glue to a gluing area in a joint flap 2 of a corrugated board sheet 1 for manufacturing a box, which runs on a box manufacturing line, a sheet end detection sensor 3 for detecting the front and rear ends of the corrugated board sheet 1, an encoder 7 for measuring the travel distance of the corrugated board sheet 1, and a control unit 9 for controlling the operation of the glue guns 8a and 8b. The control unit 9 learns and stores the position of gluing area on the basis of the information from the sheet end detection sensor 3 and the encoder 7 while the corrugated board sheet 1 is run at a low speed, and restricts the acquisition of detection signals by the sensor 3 during the time from the passing of the end point of the joint flap 2 to the arrival of the start point of the next joint flap 2.

  • Patent number: 5688218
Abstract: A method of folding and sealing the major and minor end flaps of a carton to provide a sift proof container wherein the method includes providing a carton having first and second inside and outside major flaps and a pair of minor flaps, and folding the minor flaps to substantially cover an open end of the carton. Opposite sides of the first inside major flap are then mitered and both the first and second major flaps are positioned in open positions with respect to the carton. The carton is then put in motion and, during such motion, an adhesive pattern is applied from a stationary adhesive nozzle member to selected areas of the second outside major flap and the minor flaps. The first inside major flap is then folded onto the minor flaps followed by the second outside major flap which provides direct sealing contact between the second outside major flap and both minor flaps as well as portions of the first inside major flap so as to provide the sift proof carton.

  • Patent number: 5024709
Abstract: A method of forming a sift-proof seal for closure of a box having a plurality of folded flaps, the seal being formed by an adhesive strip pattern. The flaps are moved linearly toward a plurality of nozzles which extrude adhesive in a pattern of closely spaced adhesive strips. A flap having such an adhesive pattern is brought into contact with a second flap to compress the pattern of adhesive therebetween. The spacing between adjacent strips of adhesive is such that the folding of the flap causes merging of the adhesive to form a continuous strip of adhesive, thereby forming a box closure. The adhesive pattern is limited to a first outside edge of the first flap, with each remaining outside edges receiving a sift-proof continuous line of adhesive.

  • Patent number: 5016812
Abstract: The invention relates to a high-integrity closure, sift-proof carton [10], a method and an adhesive dispensing apparatus for producing same. Foamed hot melt adhesive is dispensed in parallel strips from dispensing guns onto the flaps [20], [22], [30], [32] of the carton [10], which are thereafter folded down to close the carton [10]. The strips can be spaced so that a continuous tight adhesive seal is formed, especially by providing a strip pattern interdigitating when the flaps contact each other. Since all strips are provided in parallel, while the carton is moved with respect to the dispensing apparatus, application of adhesive is fast and reliable.

  • Patent number: 4976672
Abstract: A machine or machine section for squaring folded container blanks has a conveyor for conveying slotted and partially folded container blanks. A folding device completes folding of each container blank while being conveyed by the conveyor. A gauge plate is inserted in a slot in each of the slotted and partially folded container blanks. A mechanism moves the gauge plate in timed sequence with the conveyor, inserts the gauge plate in the slot before completion of folding of the respective blank in order to "square" the folded blank, and then withdraws the gauge plate from the slot. Overlapping flaps of each folded blank may be tacked together during "squaring" by drops of hot melt adhesive which subsequently hold the flat folded blanks square while the conventional slow drying water soluble glue dries. The "squaring" arrangement may be incorporated in a conventional gluer/folder machine.
