Forming Hollow Wall Or 270 Degree Folded Edge Patents (Class 493/168)
  • Patent number: 11254080
Abstract: Device for the manufacturing a block comprising a locking key and a folded shell that is scored and/or pre-grooved. The device includes a first device that includes at least one shaping device comprising a funnel having corner folding elements and at least a pressing element or a traction element. The at least one shaping device is configured to shape a sheet element into the folded shell so that corner edges of the sheet element are folded inwardly by the corner folding elements and sides of the sheet element assume a vertical position after the pressing or traction element applies a force to a center of the sheet element. A second device is utilized that includes at least a pressing element configured to insert the locking key into said folded shell so as to form said block.

  • Patent number: 6560950
Abstract: An overfolding device for overfolding the top panels of a formed, filled and sealed gable top carton is disclosed herein. The overfolding of the top panels eliminates the convexing of the top panels due to a springback effect inherent in the packaging material of the carton, and thus provides a flat top panel for placement of a fitment thereon by a post processing fitment applicator. The overfolding device may be positioned directly subsequent to a top sealing station of a form, fill and seal packaging machine such as a TETRA REX® packaging machine. The overfolding device includes an attachment means, a movement means and a folding mechanism. The folding mechanism may include a plurality of projection members, a plurality of engagement members and a frame.

  • Patent number: 6520898
Abstract: An E Bliss compartmented container comprising an erected E divider blank about which a Bliss body blank has been erected with its endwalls adhesively laminated to endwall panels of the E divider. The E blank comprises a rectangular piece of corrugated fiberboard material having a pair of divider panels, a pair of sidewall panels, a pair of endwall panels and, if desired, a pair of corner post flanges, all symmetrically arrayed about a longitudinal center line. The divider panels comprise the end-most pair of all of the panels of the blank which is completely severed through from end to end along the longitudinal center line, except for a spaced apart pair of intact crush score areas interconnecting the pair of divider panels as a hinge. The body blank comprises a substantially rectangular piece of material having a central bottom panel with integral opposite endwall panels and a pair of sidewall flaps.

  • Patent number: 6228011
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a bag-in-carton using a forming jig to shape a side-sealed closed portion of the inner bag in accordance with the related shape of the carton. The forming jig helps form a bag-in-carton having an inner bag formed with high precision and constant volume, thus ultimately permitting good discharge of contents in the bag-in-carton with little content in the inner bag after discharge.

  • Patent number: 5876319
Abstract: A machine for forming a variety of different sturdy, stackable three-part fiberboard containers having a depth dimension greater than their width dimension, and which are suitable for holding bags filled with liquid. The machine includes a slidable, removable mandrel which cycles between a fiberboard hopper area and a container forming compression area. Each of two side bins provides a fiberboard end panel which comes into contact with independently slidable edge picks on the mandrel. Just before the mandrel cycles forward, the edge picks push the fiberboard end panels forward where they are bent by the action of two folding elements. Meanwhile, a fiberboard body matt is brought into position in front of the retracted mandrel from an overhead feed unit. Adhesive material is sprayed onto selected parts of the body matt as it is placed into position in front of the mandrel.

  • Patent number: 5415345
Abstract: A box with integral corner reinforcements and a method of making the same is described. The method comprises folding the box from a prescored sheet of material so as to leave a flap adjacent each corner. The flap is prescored and is pushed towards its hinged corner whereby it buckles into a curved shape. The end of the flap is secured by gluing or stapling so as to stabilize the curved shape. The curved shape considerably increases the stiffness and crush resistance of the whole box and may allow may more boxes to be stacked.

  • Patent number: 5302227
Abstract: A closing method for a multi-sided paperboard carton includes sealing a cover with side edge extensions to corresponding side flanges defined by fold lines on the paperboard carton during continuous feeding of the carton along the feed path. The side flanges of the carton body are bent downward during continuous feed movement with a force sufficient to cause the flanges to fold and remain free and below a plane passing through the fold line when released. The cover is placed on the carton to lie substantially in a plane and with the edge extensions overlying the flanges. A hot air stream is directed into the half-V gap presented between each flange and associated cover side edge extension to activate an adhesive coating and the flanges are pressed against the cover for sealing. The carton is carried through the bending stage in a die having an open bottom cavity and forming blades on its side edges that engage the fold line between the side flanges and the carton side panels from below.

  • Patent number: 4926615
Abstract: A machine for forming cardboard blanks into crates (open top containers) for transporting and storing goods, particularly plastic containers of milk. The machine has folding apparatus for folding opposed extended end flaps of the blank back on themselves to form a reinforcing structure including a ledge which, in a formed crate extends inwardly across each of two opposed ends of the crate towards the upper edges of the opposed ends. A first carriage member with suction means lifts a blank from a stack and places it at said folding apparatus. A second carriage member progresses the blank through the folding apparatus to forming apparatus where the goods are loaded onto the blank to form a mandrel and the carton is formed into a crate around the goods.

  • Patent number: 4341055
Abstract: A box blank with receptacle and cover sections each with side flaps and end flaps has a hinge panel joining the two sections. A vacuum pickup draws a flat blank from a supply stack to a feed carriage which transfers the blank past sprays that apply glue to the end flaps. The speed of the carrier varies, but beneath the glue sprays speed is uniform. The carriage delivers the glue coated box blank to a former and a tray forming head having concave and convex interacting pressure plates which maintain doubled over end flaps of each section in a concave configuration with respect to the box while the folded end sections are adhered to form a box tray from the blank. Former flap benders cooperate with the tray forming head to shape the box tray. A second vacuum pickup clasps the formed tray at the hinge panel and draws a shaped tray from the forming head into engagement with folding elements such that the cover and receptacle sections are bent together along the hinge panel to form a closed box.
