Abstract: Method and apparatus for grooving a plastic drinking straw in which a straw is moved to an axially movable, rotatable, circumferentially grooved, pointed mandrel or pin then opposed grooved bars mating with grooves of the pin are pressed against the straw and moved in opposite directions lengthwise of the grooves of the bars.
Abstract: At a location between a single facer machine and a glue machine, a web of corrugated paperboard has the flutes crushed in a narrow zone longitudinally of the web. A bonding agent is applied only to the uncrushed flutes. Preprinted liners are applied to the bonding agent on the uncrushed flutes with the liners being spaced from one another by said narrow zone.
Abstract: A flat bottom plastic film bag includes triangular gusset portions formed by a plurality of parallel heat welds which fuse portions of opposed pleats together and cooperate with a transverse central bottom seam to form a flat bottom bag from a seamed or seamless plastic film tube. The longitudinal side and end walls of the bag are provided with heat embossed corrugations which enhance the freestanding characteristics of the bag and a transverse crease is formed along the fold line between the sidewalls of the bag and the bottom wall to enhance the bottom forming characteristics of the bag when it is snapped from a folded position to an opened position.
Abstract: An apparatus for use in connection with folding bags made from a flimsy material such as plastic, includes a feeding system for discharging bags along a feed direction with each bag having a plurality of corrugated regions in the transverse direction with respect to the feed direction; a receiving system for receiving the bags from the feeding system and for maintaining in each bag at least some of the corrugated regions until each of the bags stops its movement along the feed direction, and a fence near the receiving system for stopping the movement of each of the bags along the feed direction.
Abstract: Elongated hollow members or tubes frictionally engage the interior wall of a hollow corrugating roll or a hollow pressure roll of a single facer so as to minimize the elastic vibration thereof and thereby to minimize the noise developed and transmitted during the operation of the single facer. A plurality of such tubes of a given diameter are arranged circumferentially about the interior wall of the shell of a roll of a single facer in such manner that each of the tubes frictionally engages the interior wall and so that each of the tubes also engages the adjacent tubes on either side thereof, thereby providing an assembled structure in which the plurality of tubes resist the elastic deformation of the roll and the resultant elastic vibratiion and thereby reduce the noise level.
Abstract: A corrugated container and the method of forming the container saves paper. The method of forming the container includes gluing backing webs of paper to each side of a corrugated web, resulting in a composite web of three layer thickness. One of the backing layers is wider than the other backing layers, defining single layer strips on each edge of the multiple layer central section. Longitudinal fold lines are placed in the multiple and single layer strips. The composite web is sheared into sheets, with the sheet being folded along the fold lines into a container. The fold lines are placed to position the single layer portions on the upper sidewalls and top of the container, where less strength is required.
Abstract: A changeover system for a corrugator designed to halt the corrugator during the changeover to diminish paper loss. When the corrugator is halted, a traveling knife severs the combined webs adjacent the beginning of the steam table run. The slitter scorer and the cutoff are changed and the corrugator is restarted. The traveling knife which severs the combined webs may operate above the steam table or below the steam table; alternate forms may be used.
Abstract: A machine for forming a corrugated package from sheet material including a rotatable corrugation head having a fluted periphery and a front face; corrugating means and sealing means movable into association with the head for corrugating an inner sheet material and sealing two plys of material together, respectively; means for feeding an inner sheet having a selected length and width to the head adjacent said corrugating means and means for feeding an outer sheet having a selected length and width to the head adjacent the sealing means; means for moving a bottom wall member having a selected shape into engagement with the front face of the head and associated with the first and second sheets to form the bottom wall of the package; and means to control the operation of said machine so that the rotation of said head and the function of the above-described components are coordinated to form a corrugated side wall of the package from two sheets simultaneously with the joinder of said side wall with the bottom wall
