Patent number: 5486152Abstract: A plough for closing carton flaps, particularly major carton flaps and a process for making the plough. The plough is designed to cause the flaps to close at or near constant velocity so as to minimize disruptions on the manufacturing line. The plough is prepared by generating data describing the coordinates of a flap as it closes at or near constant velocity, using the data to generate additional data describing the contour of a plough necessary to close the flap at or near constant velocity, and causing the plough to be fabricated utilizing the contour data.Type: GrantFiled: October 6, 1994Date of Patent: January 23, 1996Assignee: Lever Brothers Company, Division of Conopco, Inc.Inventors: Daniel J. Patent number: 5445592Abstract: A signature booklet maker (SBM) finishing apparatus for an image producing device includes a modified fold blade having a plurality of contacting teeth spaced part by a predetermined distance. The contacting teeth further include a predetermined contact surface width and a predetermined thickness. The grind direction of the teeth is specified to reduce inside sheet drag during folding. The spaced teeth are adapted drive the stitched signature set in a folding unit without contacting the stitches, thereby eliminating fold skew and inside sheet marking. Moreover, the fold blade has a predetermined hardness to ensure that the blade is not damaged during folding. The SBM further includes a trim waste elimination device and knife guard to prevent booklet trimmings from migrating throughout the trimmer unit. The knife guard eliminates the safety hazard caused by the blade in the resting position and guides air from an air blower to force booklet trimmings into a waste chute.Type: GrantFiled: September 9, 1994Date of Patent: August 29, 1995Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: Paul N. Patent number: 5232430Abstract: A piercing blade for perforating slits in a continuous tubular web of thermo-plastic material is shown. The blade is used in a machine to form individual bags from the tube by heat sealing the bottom and perforating the top of the next bag. The piercing teeth in the blade have formed in the front face a number of horizontal grooves which serve to pick up the edge of the top layer of the slit to form a burr thereon and thus separate the two plys of the tubular web, facilitating the opening of the top of the bag when it is separated from the roll of continuous tubular material.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1992Date of Patent: August 3, 1993Inventor: J. Patent number: 5194063Abstract: A garland making device which comprises an arm rotatable about an axis formed by a stand securable to a work surface, the arm being rotatable by a crank. There is associated with and rotates simultaneously with the arm, a spool to feed a core cord or wire to an operator who adds sections of garland to the core at any desired rate of formation. The arm also provides and feeds from an independent source and by rotation of the arm wire which is wrapped by the arm around the foliage and core.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1991Date of Patent: March 16, 1993Assignee: Classico Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Celia Kalm, Owen McKimm

Patent number: 5186705Abstract: An approved method and apparatus for forming clasp envelopes. The apertures extending through the top and bottom panels of the envelope body and the clasp receiving aperture extending through the top flap are formed after the envelope has been completely assembled save for the folding of the top flap for shipping. This ensures that the apertures extending through the top and bottom panels of the envelope body are in perfect registration. Reinforcement tape is applied on the top flap of the envelope, through which the aperture in the top flap extends, after the envelopes have been cut from the continuous strip of envelope blanks. This ensures that the cutting device used to sever the continuous strip into individual envelopes must cut only paper, thus improving longevity of the cutting device, and allows a single punch device to be used to form the hole and the apertures. Additionally, the method and apparatus employ an improved device for applying the clasp to the back panel of the envelope body.Type: GrantFiled: December 13, 1991Date of Patent: February 16, 1993Assignee: Winkler & DunnebierInventor: Alfred Doderer-Winkler
