  • Patent number: 5185052
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for longitudinally pleating a moving lamina. The apparatus features a curved axis roll having a stationary axis circumscribed by a rotating sleeve with a plurality of circumferentially oriented grooves in the rotating sleeve. The pleats are produced by the intermeshing of the lamina with the grooves of the rotating sleeve. Preferably a complementary curved axis roll having lands which interdigitate with the grooves of the first roll is used in conjunction with the first curved axis roll. The apparatus preferably further comprises a third curved axis roll disposed upstream of the first curved axis roll to substantially equalize the paths of travel of any points on the moving lamina by compensating for differences in the paths of travel between the edges and centerline of the lamina.

  • Patent number: 5122109
Abstract: In a known folding drum of a folding machine for use with a rotary press, a web to be cut on the folding drum is guided and held by a plurality of parallel bands aligned in the axial direction of the folding drum and spanning a gap of the folding drum. Tips of a folding blade project to the outside of the folding drum through the gaps between the respective bands. • Patent number: 5104367
Abstract: A roller for use in fibrillating oriented films of polyolefin materials having a plurality of pins projecting from the surface of the roller. The pins are distributed in a plurality of rows spaced around the roller surface. The rows each contain about 25 to 34 pins per inch in a space-staggered relationship along two adjacent lines extending along the surface of the roller, either in a linear relationship inclined to a line parallel to the axis or rotation, or in a sinusoidal relationship with adjacent rows being in or out of phase. The roller is rotated and the film is advanced over the rotating roller surface for an arc length of contact of about 30 to 37 degrees to fibrillate the film. The ratio of the surface speed of the roller to the advancing film are controlled to a ratio between from about 1.8:1 to about 2.2:1.

  • Patent number: 5067311
Abstract: An apparatus for forming packaging material into a tubular form includes angularly disposed forming rollers for causing the longitudinal edges of the packaging material to overlap one another so that they can be sealed together. To prevent the packaging material tube from being trapped between adjacent rollers, each of the forming rollers can be provided with one straight roller edge and one chamfered roller edge. The rollers are positioned such that the chamfered roller edge of one forming roller cooperates with the straight roller edge of the adjacent roller, thereby defining a nip directed generally tangentially to an adjacent portion of the packaging material tube. Alternatively, to achieve the same objective, two different types of forming rollers can be employed, one type in which both roller edges are straight and another type in which both roller edges are chamfered. In this latter case, the two types of rollers are alternated with one another.

  • Patent number: 5044060
Abstract: A hydraulically expandable hub having a collection groove and a vent port to prevent the leakage of oil upon the shaft to which the hub is mounted and a method for using such a hub is disclosed. The oil collection groove is located along the inside diameter of the hub between each end of the hub and the oil groove also located on the inside diameter of the hub. A vent port is connected to the collection groove so a vacuum source can be coupled to the hub. The negative pressure produced by the vacuum source at the collection groove sweeps or pulls oil seepage from the oil groove into the collection groove which is transported to the hub exterior through the vent port.
