  • Patent number: 9023772
Abstract: Corrosion by ammonia/amine salts in hydrocarbon streams such as distillation overhead streams that contain a mineral acid and water can be prevented, avoided or minimized by adding certain strong amines to the streams. The amines have a pKa between about 10.5 to about 12 and include, but are not necessarily limited to, dimethylamine, diethylamine, dipropylamine, diisopropyl-amine, di-n-butylamine, diisobutylamine, di-sec-butylamine, di-tert-butylamine, pyrrolidine, piperidine, and combinations thereof. If the hydrocarbon stream further includes a nitrogen-containing compound such as ammonia, a tramp and/or a residual amine which can form a corrosive salt with the mineral acid, then the added amine is a stronger base than the tramp or residual amine, if present. The amount of added amine is greater than total amount of nitrogen-containing compound, so that any corrosive salts formed are less corrosive than the salts that would otherwise form from the ammonia and/or tramp amine.

  • Patent number: 6096826
Abstract: A family of piperidone functionalized polymers based on polymers containing a plurality of hydroxyl groups. Piperidone or piperidone derivatives form a cyclic ketal linkage with hydroxyl groups contained on adjacent or alternating carbon atoms of the base polymer. Preferred compositions are piperidone functionalized poly(vinyl alcohol) having the following general formulae: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 through R.sub.6 are each independently hydrogen, methyl, or a C.sub.2 to C.sub.4 saturated or unsaturated alkyl groups, R.sub.7 is O.cndot. or OR.sub.8, wherein R.sub.8 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl or C(.dbd.O)alkyl group; X.sup.- is a salt; x ranges from 50 to 99 mol %; y ranges from 0 to 30 mol %; and z ranges from 1 to 20 mol %. The compounds are useful in ink jet paper coating applications.

  • Patent number: 5626656
Abstract: A release agent for green sand mold forming contains a hydrocarbon oil as the main lubrication component. The release agent contains a surface active agent as a dispersant and an anion surface active agent and/or a strong basic amine as a wettability improving agent as essential components besides the hydrocarbon oil. The release agent is used in a form of oil-in-water type emulsion by diluting it with water. Since it is possible to dilute the release agent with water, the release agent occupies less capacity during storage and transportation, and since the release agent can increase the water to the hydrocarbon oil ratio of the composition at application, it contributes to improvements in resource saving and safety against fire.
