Abstract: This invention relates to a composition that is a novel improvement of non-oil containing metal working fluids, also known as synthetic metal working fluids. The invention is a non-oil containing metalworking lubricant composition, having an engineered particle size of greater than 200 nanometers upon dilution. The expansive particle size results in a substantial increase in lubricity, suitable for the heavy-duty operations previously attainable only with oil-containing products. Additionally, this non-oil containing metalworking lubricant incorporates the best of the positive attributes of oil-containing products into its composition, including excellent corrosion inhibition and heavy-duty operation capable lubricity.

In accordance with the invention, the interface is lubricated with a lubricant that provides sufficient lubrication such that the breaking housing torque required to initiate relative movement of the outer portion and housing is no greater than 130% of the moving housing torque required to maintain relative movement of the outer portion and housing. The lubricant preferably is a fatty acid, such as stearic acid or palmitic acid. In accordance with highly preferred embodiments of the invention, the lubricant comprises a grease composed of a base lubricating oil that is thickened with a fatty acid that is substantially uniformly dispersed therein.

  • Publication number: 20030036485
Abstract: The present invention relates to a treatment to be used as an additive to a stock lubricant. The present invention may comprise an amount of a base fluid or other fluid, such as polybutylene, naphthenic oil, or a group III base fluid and a bismuth in a non-active sulfur. The present invention formula may further comprise one or more of a defoamer, a friction modifier, a detergent, a dispersant, and a polyol ester. Bismuth may be a particularly good sacrificial material for use as a lubricant additive because it is a heavy weight inorganic material that becomes soft at high temperatures. The preferred embodiment may utilize approximately 60% of the base fluid and approximately 30% of the bismuth in a non-active sulfur (approximately 15%-18% by weight bismuth) by volume. The treatment can be useful as a additive to a motor oil, a hydraulic lubricant, a gear lubricant, a diesel oil lubricant, or a compressor lubricant.
