  • Patent number: 8044008
Abstract: A novel and safe composition has been discovered that is effective for cleaning dental appliances (e.g. removable braces, retainers, dentures, etc.). This composition bleaches, disinfects, and deodorizes the appliance, while removing plaque that has accumulated on the appliance during wear. The composition comprises a chloramine bleaching agent that liberates hypochlorous acid upon contact with water, a surfactant, a water-soluble carboxylic acid and an alkaline base to produce effervescence and regulate pH, a sequestering agent for alkaline earth metal ions, a drying agent, and an indicator dye that signifies the end of the cleansing process. In a preferred method of using this invention, the premixed components are added to water, and the dental appliance is submerged in the resulting effervescent solution until a color change indicates that cleaning is complete. This invention provides a safe, effective, and convenient method for cleansing and disinfecting dental appliances.

Abstract: Chlorous acid is generated from a chlorite salt precursor, a chlorate salt precursor, or a combination of both by ion exchange. The ion exchange material facilitates the generation of chlorous acid by simultaneously removing unwanted cations from solution and adding hydrogen ion to solution. Chlorine dioxide is generated in a controlled manner from chlorous acid by catalysis. Chlorine dioxide can be generated either subsequent to the generation of chlorous acid or simultaneously with the generation of chlorous acid. For catalysis of chlorous acid to chlorine dioxide, the chlorous acid may be generated by ion exchange or in a conventional manner. Ion exchange materials are also used to purify the chlorous acid and chlorine dioxide solutions, without causing degradation of said solutions, to exchange undesirable ions in the chlorous acid and chlorine dioxide solutions with desirable ions, such as stabilizing ions, and to adjust the pH of chlorous acid and chlorine dioxide solutions.

  • Patent number: 7704935
Abstract: An antiseptic cleaning agent, generally, comprising chlorhexidine acetate and a solvent, such as an alcohol and/or water. The chlorhexidine acetate acts as a highly effective biocide. Additionally, the chlorhexidine acetate allows the cleaning agent to dry without leaving a tacky residue. Where the cleaning agent comprises one or more alcohols, the alcohols may comprise any suitable alcohols, including lower alcohols having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, such as ethanol and isopropanol. In addition to chlorhexidine acetate, the cleaning agent optionally comprises another non-alcohol biocide, such as triclosan. The cleaning agent can be used in any suitable manner. For instance, the cleaning agent may be impregnated in an absorbent material, such as a towelette, swabstick, or gauze. Additionally, the absorbent material may comprise a positively charged or a non-ionic substance, such as polypropylene or polyester.

  • Patent number: 7687450
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to compositions useful for maintaining the clean impression of a carpet (that is, its scent and appearance) over an extended time despite occurrences that might damage the carpet surface. The composition, which includes an antimicrobial agent, an enzyme inhibitor, and an odor-reacting compound, can be used by a consumer to remove contaminants from the carpet and to prevent the odor associated with the decomposition of future contamination. Specifically, the composition has been shown effective in neutralizing odors associated with the decomposition of organic materials (such as urine or food spills) by absorbing and/or removing the odor-generating source. A manufacturing treatment composition and methods for using are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7670997
Abstract: An aqueous ophthalmic composition comprising a branched, glycerol monoalkyl compound and a fatty acid monoester. The fatty acid monoester comprises an aliphatic fatty acid portion having six to fourteen carbon atoms and an aliphatic hydroxyl portion. The composition will also have an osmolality in a range from 200 mOsmol/kg to 400 mOsmol/kg. The invention is also directed to a method of inhibiting the formation of foam in an aqueous ophthalmic composition that includes a surfactant as well as to a method of enhancing the biocidal efficacy of an aqueous ophthalmic composition containing a fatty acid monoester.

Abstract: Potassium-containing polyphosphate glasses having a relatively high amount of potassium and a relatively low level of insoluble material (e.g., less than about 10% by weight), and a method for their production that includes using a boron-containing glass-former additive. More specifically, these polyphosphate glasses may be described according to the formula M(n+2)O(PO3)n, where M is at least K or K+Na and the glasses have a mole % M-as-K that is about 33 to 100. These polyphosphate glasses may be used in reduced sodium foods (e.g., beverages and meat products).
